New Geelong-based German restaurant, Das Bierhaus is hosting Oktoberfest

Words by Staff Writer

Prost! Get on your lederhosen and dirndls, Oktoberfest is coming to Geelong thanks to Das Bierhaus.

Having taken over the old Bluestone corner building across from The Palais on Moorabool Street that was formerly Italian restaurant Azzurra Trattoria, Das Bierhaus is Geelong’s newest German haven.

Das Bierhaus is a restaurant and bar serving traditional German cuisine in Geelong, including bretzels, schnitzels, sauerkraut, pork knuckle, and bratwursts, and pouring steins of weissbier (wheat beer). It opened its doors in late June and has brought the vibrance of a traditional beer hall to our region, including live German folk music and collective cheers.

In annual German tradition, Das Bierhaus is getting involved in Oktoberfest, throwing three weeks of celebrations in their Geelong venue. Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest, featuring a beer festival and a travelling carnival held annually in Munich, Bavaria. The event attracts millions of attendees from across the world to celebrate German traditions through drinking, east contests, games, attractions and live music entertainment. Coinciding with the Munich spectacular dates from Saturday 21 September until Sunday 6 October, Das Bierhaus will host it’s very own Oktoberfest!

Oktoberfest at Das Bierhaus will expand from their already traditional food, drink and live music offerings with even more entertainment, games and competitions. They are encouraging patrons to wear their finest lederhosen and dirndls with the promise of best dressed prizes, and will hold stein holding/ stein carrying competitions to see who has the strongest hands. German dancing and singalongs are on the cards thanks to their impeccable roster of Alpen Musik or tradition German folk music every Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the event, but is something on offer weekly during their dinner sessions.

After all of the beer and massive feast of flavoursome German food (the schnitzel is the size of a platter and they offer a wurst platter – a literal sausage fest featuring various types of wursts, kransky’s and Nuernberger with sides of mash sauerkraut and more!!), finish off the night with apple strudel and a final Prost!

Lean into your inner Üter Zörker, and be the ultimate German guest at Oktoberfest! More details on events are to come. Check out Das Bierhaus for more details or to book a table!
