The annual Piccadilly Christmas Market is returning to Geelong, going ahead on Saturday, December 3 2022 at the Barwon Valley Activity Centre in Belmont from 10am to 3pm. Now they make their maiden voyage to Australia to soak in the remnants of our summer.

Prodigious Tuareg guitarist and songwriter Mdou Moctar fits the BMF bill perfectly, with an electric performance that boldly reforges contemporary Saharan music by melding Eddie Van Halen pyrotechnics,  Hendrix inspired shredding, and poetic meditations on love, religion, women’s rights, inequality and Western Africa’s exploitation at the hands of colonial powers.

“We love makin’ songs, it’s what keeps us going,” bassist and backing vocalist Tim Foreman told us back in 2012, “the music, the songs, all have a story, and I think we write better through hard times than through good.”

“We’ve been through a lot of adversity as a band, and I think music is a great way to deal with that,” he continues.

“I guess we write more about things we don’t understand than things we do. And the music that’s always spoken to me as a fan has always been the same way, music that really takes you somewhere.”

Since forming in 1996, Switchfoot have released 12 studio albums, the most recent of which being 2021’s Interrobang. “Our music is just honest, it comes from an honest place, of beliefs and doubts and struggles, and I think it’s something that speaks to a lot of people, but not to everyone.”

“We write songs that a lot of people do appreciate, and the ones that don’t, we couldn’t care less about at this point. You kinda have to have that attitude these days, if you’re gonna make music that you believe in.”

Catch them at Max Watt’s on February 3. Tickets go on sale to the general public on December 2, grab them by heading here.

EMU Australia is having a massive warehouse sale in South Geelong this week

Unofficially ranked as our number one winter essential, UGG boots are an essential item for any Victorian who likes keeping warm around the house on a rain-soaked Sunday (or any day). While winter might be over, Christmas is coming and nothing says ‘best present ever’ like a pair of EMU uggs!

If you’ve got a few people to buy for this festive season and have no idea where to start, EMU Australia has you covered with their huge warehouse sale in Geelong this week.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around the region here

Going down in South Geelong at 72 Barwon Terrace, the two-day sale will run Thursday, December 1 and Friday, December 2 from 10am to 4pm.

It’s not exactly clear what will be available and what the discounts will be, but previous warehouse sales have seen some crazy discounts, including nothing over $20 so let’s hope that one returns!! We’d expect you’ll be able to get your hands on boots, kids boots, slippers, and potentially some samples if the last few events are anything to go by.

As always with sales like this, we recommend you bring cash as there’s a very high chance Eftpos won’t be available – and you wouldn’t want to have to put that bargain pair of snuggly boots back on the shelf.

If you’re unfamiliar with EMU and the warehouse in Geelong, it’s here where the magic happens. The Australian-owned business makes all its Platinum Sheepskin products, such as Platinum Stingers, Platinum Outbacks and Platinum Slippers, right here in this warehouse. So you’ll be supporting an Aussie company and local jobs and saving crucial dollars on high-quality products.

If you’re stressing over Chrissy ideas or you’re just due for a new pair of Uggs, I really hope this sale brings you some soft, fluffy sheepskin happiness.

Prepare to slip into a cloud of comfort and warmth. You can check out what EMU offers via their website.

Kurt Vile and the Violators announce Australian headline tour

Fresh from an acclaimed new album (watch my moves) and a whirlwind Australian trip which saw him share the stage with long-time pal and collaborator Courtney Barnett, opening for Nick Cave and Warren Ellis at Hanging Rock, Kurt Vile brings his slow-burning, free-wheeling jams back to Australia for a full band tour.

Kurt Vile and the Violators Australian tour dates

  • Tuesday, 28 March 2023 | Fremantle, Fremantle Arts Centre | Tickets
  • Thursday 30 March 2023 | Canberra, Kambri @ ANU | Tickets
  • Friday 31 March, 2023 | Sydney, Sydney Opera House | Tickets
  • Saturday 1 April 2023 | Bambra, Meadow Festival Victoria | Tickets
  • Monday 3 April 2023 | Brisbane, The Princess Theatre | Tickets

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Kurt recorded (watch my moves) in his home studio in Philly’s Mount Airy neighbourhood of Philadelphia, with help from long-time collaborator Rob Schnapf (Richard Thompson, Elliott Smith). Across the record, which includes 14 originals as well as a version of Bruce Springsteen’s Wages of Sin, Vile pulls his talents in unexpected directions, resulting in a vibrant, yet meditative album propelled by his trademark laid-back charm and curious spirit. The album’s artwork features Kurt’s daughters Delphine and Awilda, who recently joined their dad for a festive version of Bob Dylan’s Must Be Santa.

Reflecting on the record, Vile shared: “When Waylon Jennings became an outlaw country artist, he liked to record at Hillbilly Central, which was Tompall Glaser’s studio. OKV Central is my version of that in Mount Airy. I’ve come into my own here, and at the same time I’m getting back to my home-recording roots,” and continues, “It’s about songwriting. It’s about lyrics. It’s about being the master of all domains in the music. I’m always thinking about catchy music, even though it’s fried, or sizzled, out. It’s my own version of a classic thing—it’s moving forward and backward at the same time.”

In addition to Schnapf, Vile’s longtime band, The Violators and James Stewart, the album features special guests Chastity Belt, Cate Le Bon and percussionists Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint, Courtney Barnett) and Sarah Jones (Hot Chip, Harry Styles).  (watch my moves) is Vile’s ninth solo full-length studio album and first since 2018’s Bottle It In.

In addition to his solo work, Vile has collaborated with numerous artists including John Prine, Courtney Barnett, The War on Drugs, The Sadies and more, and is featured on 2021 compilation I’ll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute to The Velvet Underground & Nico. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Vile lives in the Mount Airy neighbourhood with his wife and two daughters.

At a hometown Berlin performance in 2017, Moderat announced that they would be going on hiatus. “Hiatus” being such a charged phrase in music, no one knew when – or if – they would return. Then, six years after their last album, Moderat released MORE D4TA, their fourth record, a reflection of a tumultuous few years through the lens of emotive pop and atmospheric electronics. Created through hours of testing and experimenting on a modular rig, the record teeters across electronic genres while maintaining the electro pop sound the trio have become synonymous with.

MORE D4TA is a thrilling combination of modular composition, field recordings and other sonic oddities, mirrored in their new live performance. With two decades of collaboration under their belt, Moderat’s creative process and live experience runs like clockwork, having hopped on stages across the globe together, including at Coachella, Glastonbury and Primavera.

MORE D4TA wrestles with feelings of isolation and confusion, its title reflecting the information overload and disillusionment that came with many parts of the world being stuck in the digital sphere. Their performances provide opportunities to leave these moments behind, an ethereal escape into their rich melodies, dense soundscapes and elated electro pop.

Each and every moment is both danceable and cathartic: do not miss the opportunity to look to a brighter future with Moderat this March.

Presale tickets go on sale Thursday, December 1 with general public tickets on sale Friday, December 2. Find out more here

Having topped the state in their category, Mavs went on to represent Victoria and Tasmania at the 2022 National Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence, held on Monday 28 November at Gambaro Function Centre in Brisbane.

Up against some of the very best Greek restaurants across the country, Mavs took out the Bronze prize, well and truly putting Geelong’s only authentic Greek eatery firmly on the map.

Offering a sojourn around the Mediterranean without the airfare, the local Greek restaurant came in just behind Sydney eatery JAAKS Restaurant and Bar (who claimed silver) and ESTIA Restaurant in Henley Beach, South Australia who took out gold.

Jimmy Barnes cancels upcoming summer shows due to surgery

Aussie rock legend and one of this country’s hardest working musos Jimmy Barnes has withdrawn from a swathe of summer tour dates as he requires undergo essential hip and back surgery.

He is completely confident of making a full recovery and hitting the road again in the second half of 2023.

“I’ve been jumping off PA’s and stomping around stages for nearly 50 years, but it’s finally caught up with me”, explains the Australian rock icon.

“I’ve had niggling back and hip issues for years, but things suddenly got a lot worse over the last few weeks and I’m now in constant and severe pain. As everybody knows, it’s against my religion to blow out gigs but the Doctors tell me I need an operation as soon as possible and it will really limit my movement for a few months. As much as it kills me to inconvenience everyone, I have to get this fixed so I can jump around onstage for another 50 years.”

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

His headlining set at Valo Adelaide 500 on Saturday, 3 December will proceed as planned. Barnes then needs to withdraw from all his other live commitments over summer to undertake this essential operation and allow the time needed for recovery. He sends his sincere apologies to the fans and music workers who will be impacted.

Ticketholders for all the affected Jimmy Barnes concerts (excl. Bluesfest) will be contacted via email by the event promoters. Detailed information will also be posted on the websites of each individual show, but Coffs Harbour is being postponed until 21 October 2023, Sandstone Point will move to 5 August 2023 and Hobart unfortunately needs to be cancelled due to line-up and venue availability issues.

Thankfully Hoodoo Gurus have agreed to step in on the Wollongong, Torquay and Rochford Wines gigs early next year so those three dates will go ahead as scheduled but with this new line-up.

“I’m very grateful that the Gurus have agreed to headline these three big gigs in my absence”, said Barnes.

“We played some great shows together last summer so I know audiences will be in good hands. Their addition to the top of the Wollongong, Torquay and Rochford line-ups also means that the other bands on the bill, like The Living End, Wolfmother and Noiseworks, will still get their chance to rock. That’s important for everyone after all the disrupted touring over recent years so I strongly encourage people to #keepyourticket and support some of our finest Aussie artists at these shows.”

By The C: Jimmy Barnes, The Living End, Wolfmother and more are coming to Torquay in 2023

The surgery also means that Jimmy’s appearance at Summernats 35 in Canberra on Friday 6 January 2023 can’t go ahead, but his long time mates Jon Stevens, Daryl Braithwaite and Diesel have come in to fill Jimmy’s Summernats 35 spot. Jimmy has already confirmed he will be back for Summernats 36 in January 2024. Stranded In The Whitsundays week has also had to be rescheduled to 23-28 August 2023 and the planned Byron Bay Bluesfest unveiling of his new project, The Barnestormers will not be able to proceed in 2023.

Meanwhile, Jimmy’s highly anticipated new album Blue Christmas – his first ever collection of holidays songs – was released last Friday.

“At least I know what present I’ll be giving everyone this year”, Barnes joked. “The operation will keep me cooped up over summer and I’m a notoriously cranky patient, so I probably need to buy noise cancelling headphones for my family too – that way they’ll hopefully still be talking to me when I’m back on my feet.”

“After spending the better part of 2022 celebrating our 30th anniversary as a band, releasing our remastered debut album ‘World of Noise’ on digital platforms for the first time ever, and recently releasing our new single ‘Year of the Tiger’, we are so excited to be coming back to our home away from home with the largest and most inclusive Australian tour we have ever done,” said frontman Art Alexakis.

“By mixing it up and digging into the catalogue, it still makes it fun and relevant for us, and I think for the fans as well,” said Alexakis. “It’s still important to play the hits, but by playing those other songs as well, it makes it all seem more vibrant and real.

“Even though I recorded some of those songs over 20 years ago, I haven’t played them in a long time, so it’s like reinventing the wheel. I’m having more fun now than I have in years. I think all of us are.”

Fans will be treated to some of the band’s top 40 singles such as ‘Santa Monica’, ‘Father of Mine’, ‘I Will Buy You A New Life’, ‘Wonderful’ and ‘Everything To Everyone’ as well as their new material.

Their new single ‘Year of the Tiger’ followed their 2015 album Black is the New Black and sees them screaming back onto the scene with a politically-charged, riff-heavy rallying call.

“After all of the events of the last almost three years with Covid, worldwide shutdowns, the political debacle of 2020 emanating from in and outside of MAGA world, I felt I needed to write a song that not just explained my anger and frustration, but a song that served as a mission statement,” said Alexakis about the single.

“I feel like the tiger should be the new symbol of the new Democratic party. We will not back down, we will not forget, we hit back, we challenge lies, and we refuse to be intimidated by ignorance or loud voices.”

Formed by Alexakis in 1991 in Portland, Oregon, Everclear has since had 11 studio releases, numerous videos, thousands of shows and accolades that include a 1998 Grammy nomination.

Their current touring lineup features longtime members Davey French on guitar and Freddy Herrera on bass, as well as drummer Brian Nolan, who has performed with Everclear on multiple past tours.

Bad Shepherd Brewing Co and Visit Victoria launch new all-Victorian golf beer using historic Melbourne yeast and Geelong malt

Victoria is one the greatest golf destinations in the world, home to the two top courses in the country (Royal Melbourne Golf Club and Kingston Heath Golf Club) and some of the most stunning courses on the Bellarine, making it the  perfect place to produce a classic golf brew.

Enter the Caddie Victoria Ale, a collaboration brew between Bad Shepherd Brewing Co and Visit Victoria to develop a local beer while shining a light on this premier golfing state.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around the region here

The latest crisp and refreshing craft beer from Cheltenham brewery Bad Shepherd Brewing Co, the Caddie Victoria Ale is attentively made using malt from Geelong, proprietary hops by  Ellerslie (a fourth-generation Victorian grower), and water from Melbourne. In a rare and exclusive treat, the commercial beer also uses a 100-year-old Victorian made yeast.

Bad Shepherd jumped at the opportunity to partner with Visit Victoria to develop a truly  local beer with the golfer in mind. The focus quickly turned to developing an easy-going mid  strength pale ale using ingredients with a local provenance and that can be enjoyed on some of the best golf courses in the world

“We have amazing golf courses in Victoria and particularly through The Melbourne Sandbelt  where we are situated, and we wanted to focus on all-Victorian ingredients” said Bad  Shepherd Head Brewer and Innovation Lead Brendon Guild.

“We selected Astra and Melba hops to give us a light touch of passionfruit, stonefruit and  citrus – the perfect accompaniment as we head into summer. Best of all, at one standard  drink per can, The Caddie will make sure you stay on course and at the top of your game”.

Bad Shepherd first learned of a yeast strain made in Melbourne in 1889 by famous  bacteriologist Auguste de Bavay when it was rediscovered by beer historian and author  Peter Symons. Symons said the yeast, Melbourne No.1 pure ale yeast, was so good it was  once dubbed the ‘sire of Australian beer’ and was credited with lifting the quality of  Victorian colonial beer to world class standard.

Unused since 1936 and preserved at White Labs, a yeast lab in San Diego, Bad Shepherd has exclusively propagated the Melbourne No.1. in 2018 for their Victoria Pale Ale.

“We set ourselves a tough challenge to create a 100 per cent locally produced beer which  meant finding not only Victorian hops and malt, but also a Victorian-made yeast” said Bad  Shepherd owner and award-winning brewer Dereck Hales.

The Caddie Victoria Ale is worth the wait delivering a crisp, easy drinking mid strength pale  with a tropical aroma. Just like a good caddie, it could get you up to par.

The Caddie Victoria Ale is now available online at Bad Shepherd, select bottle shops and in most of The Melbourne Sandbelt Clubs which are open to interstate tee bookings.

Weird Al Yankovic announces 2023 Australian tour

“I don’t very often get an opportunity to tour outside of North America,” says Al, “so it’s a huge thrill for me to come back to Australia and play a bunch of songs that most people would rather not hear.”

Catch him when he heads to Melbourne’s own Palais Theatre for a show full of deep cuts and fan-favourite originals.

Weird Al Yankovic The Unfortunate Return of the Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour

  • March 10 – Palais Theatre, Melbourne
  • March 13 – Norwood Concert Hall, Adelaide
  • March 15 – Enmore Theatre, Sydney
  • March 18 – Astor Theatre, Perth
  • March 20 – QPAC, Brisbane

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Reprising his wildly successful 2018 and 2022 North American Vanity Toursincluding sold-out performances at The Kennedy Centre and Carnegie Hall, Al and his original band of four decades will be foregoing their usual high-octane theatrics (no costumes, no props, no video screens) in favour of playing deep cuts and fan-favourite originals rather than his classic parodies. Because of the no-frills, bare-bones nature of this show, Yankovic will be performing in more intimate theatres and settings.

The tour marks Weird Al’s long-anticipated return to the world stage after his highly successful 2019 Strings Attached Tour where he performed each night alongside a full symphony orchestra at world-renowned venues such as New York’s Forest Hills Stadium and Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Washington DC’s Wolf Trap.

Opening the show each night will be Al’s long-time friend (and The Vidiot FromUHF co-star), the legendary comedian Emo Philips.

“Weird Al” Yankovic is the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time. His last release Mandatory Fun (2014) was the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200. In November 2017, Legacy Recordings released the career-spanning Squeeze Box: The Complete Recordings of “Weird Al” Yankovic, including all 14 of his studio albums re-mastered for vinyl and CD format, plus a rarities album and 120-page book of photos from the archives, all housed in a replica of his signature accordion.  The project earned Yankovic his fifth Grammy Award.
