Since its highly anticipated Australian premiere in May 2023, Tina – The Tina Turner Musical has captured the hearts of audiences with its powerful storytelling, incredible performances, and iconic music. Featuring 23 hit songs including “Simply The Best,” “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” “Nutbush City Limits,” and “Proud Mary,” this smash hit musical has received 37 prestigious award nominations, including Best Musical (Tony Awards) and Best New Musical (Olivier Awards).

The musical opens in Perth this month after an unforgettable Sydney season that saw records broken with 301 performances and more than 300,000 tickets sold.

Paul Dainty AO, President, and CEO of TEG DAINTY said, “I first heard about the possibility of a stage musical portraying Tina’s life 8 years ago, and I immediately reached out to Tali Pelman at Stage Entertainment. At that point, there was no script and no book; however, I was hooked on the idea of it. Australians will love this theatrical masterpiece, which tells the story of Tina’s life, of empowerment and success, and is ultimately the best music industry comeback story of all time.”

Producer, Tali Pelman said, “I know Australia was very close to Tina’s heart, so we are especially excited our show will be touring. Our musical is about how Tina became not only the music icon we adored but the woman who continues to motivate and inspire us today. Everything about Tina was unique – her heart, her story, and of course, her voice – and we can’t wait for all of Australia to experience her journey and her triumph through our show.”

One of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, Tina Turner won 12 Grammy Awards, and her live shows were seen by millions, with more concert tickets sold than any other solo performer in music history. When she was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in October 2021, Tina Turner became one of only three women in the institution’s history to be inducted twice (she was initially inducted in 1991, alongside Ike Turner).

‘Ticket sales have not been sufficient’: Groovin The Moo 2024 cancelled

It’s a sad day for music lovers as the highly anticipated Groovin the Moo 2024 tour announces its cancellation. The festival organisers have revealed that the plug is being pulled due to insufficient ticket sales, leaving many disappointed fans in its wake.

“We are extremely disappointed to announce that the Groovin the Moo 2024 tour has been forced to cancel. Ticket sales have not been sufficient to deliver a regional festival of this kind,” a festival statement shared.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

All tickets will be refunded automatically. It’s a bitter pill to swallow for those who were eagerly anticipating the event.

In the statement, organisers expressed their gratitude to everyone who supported the festival, holding out hope for a potential return in the future. However, at this stage, there will be no further comments from the Groovin the Moo team.

“Thank you to everybody who has supported the festival. We hope to be able to bring Groovin the Moo back to regional communities in the future.”

It’s a stark contrast to the initial excitement surrounding the festival’s announcement, with a stacked lineup that promised to deliver udder mayhem. From Alison Wonderland to GZA from Wu-Tang Clan and Melanie C from the Spice Girls, the roster was brimming with talent that had fans buzzing with anticipation.

Groovin The Moo announce stacked 2024 festival lineup

But despite the star-studded lineup, it seems ticket sales couldn’t keep pace with expectations, ultimately leading to the festival’s cancellation. It’s a tough blow for the organisers and a disappointment for music fans across the region.

For now, it’s a waiting game as fans come to terms with the news and organisers regroup to assess the future of Groovin the Moo. Until then, it’s back to the drawing board for those who were counting down the days until the festival.

Let’s hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Groovin the Moo, and that it’ll make a triumphant return to regional communities in the future.

Head to the movies

It may be seen as a couples only outing on Valentine’s Day but plenty of fun can be had from seeing a horror/action film as chances are all the couples will flock to the comedys and dramas. The cinema will pretty much be just for you!

Alternatively, head to the loved up sessions and throw popcorn at couples. There’s nothing like being a glum single and ruining seeking joy in someone’s annoyance.

Get Scenic

Yes, gazing lovingly into each other’s eyes in a scenic location is an utter cliche, but there is a reason people keep doing it. Our top spots to get cozy are along the Barwon River (down the Highton end), at the scenic lookout at Brownhill Heights Lookout or the Pier down at Rippleside Park – it’s often quieter and gives a great alternative view of the city.

You can also do this while indulging in some delicious food if you opt for a picnic. Just pack a picnic basket filled with your favourite treats and head to the serene oasis of the likes of Geelong Botanic Gardens or Eastern Beach. Find a secluded spot amidst the lush greenery or by the tranquil ponds, where you can enjoy a romantic meal together surrounded by nature’s beauty.

We’ve listed our favourites spots in the piece below!

Bust out your picnic blanket and your best Tupperware this V-day and visit one of Geelong’s iconic picnic spots

Combine Scenic with Fitness and Go Hiking

This one is low cost but high impact – which is all you could really want from a date. All you need is a pair of runners or hiking boots, a date or a pal (even a pooch) and you’re good to go. With no distractions aside from the trees, birds and bees, you and your significant other can make the most of some quality time together.

We’ve put together a list of hidden hikes worth checking out, or if you’re keen to keep it local and chill, check out 10 of the best coastal walks in the region.

Wine Tasting in the Bellarine Peninsula

Indulge your senses with a romantic wine tasting adventure in the nearby Bellarine Peninsula. And in this weather, could it be any more perfect?!

With its rolling vineyards and charming cellar doors, the region offers the perfect backdrop for an intimate day of sampling exquisite wines and sharing unforgettable moments.

With V-day falling right in the middle of the week, most cellar doors should be open and operating. Check out curated guide below but make sure to check opening times ahead of rocking up.

See A Fine Romance

Tackle important topics of inclusion, identity and intersectionality in this harrowing production.

Don’t miss the chance to witness this dynamic reinterpretation of an age-old saga, where the boundaries between spectator and performer blur, and the resonance of the Trojan War is brought vividly to life on the modern stage.

Mick Thomas’ Roving Commission are playing a gig at Geelong’s Eureka Hotel in March

Mick Thomas, a stalwart of Melbourne’s music scene for over three decades, is gearing up to ignite nostalgia and delight fans at the iconic Eureka Hotel on Saturday, 2 March.

Renowned as the song master of the legendary Weddings Parties Anything, Mick Thomas brings his band, The Roving Commission, for an unforgettable night of raconteuring, troubadouring, and poetic ballads.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

The band, featuring Squeezebox Wally on Piano Accordion, Ben Franz (The Waifs) on bass, Dave Folley on drums (Tex Perkins), and bright new talent Brooke Taylor on guitar and vocals, promises a blend of folk, roots, and country with occasional cameos by ex-WPA violinist, Jen Anderson.

Mick Thomas has been at the coalface of the Australian music scene for decades – releasing six acclaimed albums throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s with his band Weddings Parties Anything and another ten albums during the subsequent solo career which has continued uninterrupted to this day – and while he’s well-and-truly counted amongst our country’s greatest ever songwriters (WPA’s 1992 single “Father’s Day” won the 1993 ARIA Award for Song Of The Year), over the journey he’s also proved a dab hand at making other people’s songs his own and imbuing them with his own spirit.

Fast forward to now, Mick’s 2023 album, “Where Only Memory Can Find You,” soared to the ARIA Top 20 and saw him take the stage at Glastonbury alongside Billy Bragg. The album, released on Coolin’ By Sound Records, made waves on the charts, peaking at #5 for Australian releases and #33 nationally, while clinching the #1 spot on the AIR Charts. Accompanied by the graphic novel “Away Away – Rudi’s Story,” Mick’s live shows witnessed a flurry of activity at the merch desk, buoyed by an enthusiastic and reinvigorated fan base.

Fresh from a triumphant run of Christmas shows, Mick is set to treat audiences to tracks from his latest album, along with hits from The Roving Commission’s back catalogue and a sprinkle of Weddoes classics.

Local folk band The Ferriters, well-known regulars at Murphys, will kick off the evening, adding their unique flair to the festivities, as well as a support slot by Van Walker.

Doors open at 7:30 pm for what promises to be an unforgettable 18+ event.

‘Networking can lead to an abundance of opportunities’: Real Songwriters of Melbourne hits the road for Geelong debut

The Real Songwriters of Melbourne (RSOM) are making their way to Geelong with an electrifying networking night set to ignite the regional music scene this February. This inaugural event marks RSOM’s first venture into regional Victoria, promising a dynamic opportunity for local talent to connect, collaborate, and thrive.

Set for Wednesday, 21 February 2024, from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm at the iconic Eureka Hotel on 96 Little Malop Street, Geelong, this gathering is poised to become a cornerstone for the burgeoning music community in the region.

  • 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
  • Eureka Hotel, 96 Little Malop Street, Geelong

Founded a decade ago, RSOM is an independent organisation dedicated to celebrating, supporting, and nurturing emerging songwriters. Their decision to venture into Geelong reflects a commitment to extending their reach beyond Melbourne’s borders.

“RSOM exists to celebrate, support and develop emerging songwriters. I started this as an assignment back in 2014 to fill the gap in the Melbourne music scene and to provide a platform for local artists to share their music, connect with other artists and seek industry support,” explains Jena Marino, the founder of RSOM.

“Through our wide range of events and programs, we have helped hundrds of songwriters across Victoria, interstate and overseas begin and grow their careers. Last year was an integral year as it was my first full time year working on RSOM and in December, we officially launched our membership platform. RSOM is completely independent and therefore, my goal is to grow it to become a permanent and viable platform for songwriters across the world to be a part of.”

For Marino, expanding into regional Victoria has long been a dream. She shares, “It has always been a goal of mine to expand RSOM into Regional Victoria so that we can continue to fill the gap and provide more opportunities to regional based songwriters.” Geelong was the natural choice for their inaugural regional event, given the city’s burgeoning talent pool and vibrant music scene.

“We chose Geelong as our first city to start this expansion due to the large amount of songwriters travelling from Geelong to our events here in Melbourne. This has been in the works for over two years and after thorough research and discussions with Geelong artists, community is the one opportunity that songwriters would like to see more of in Geelong.

“Due to the success of our Melbourne networking events in terms of bringing people together and facilitating connections, we then decided to host our first regional networking night in Geelong!”

The Geelong Networking Night will feature an exclusive industry panel, offering invaluable insights for aspiring artists. Leading the panel alongside Marino are Christina and Anthony Agostino, founders of Cartel Australia, an artist and label service agency renowned for their global collaborations with industry giants like Peggy Gou, Lenny Kravitz, and Megan Thee Stallion. Their expertise in navigating the digital landscape promises to provide attendees with unparalleled guidance.

The Eureka Hotel, a bastion of Geelong’s live music scene, will play host to this not-to-be-missed event, providing songwriters with the opportunity to expand their networks, forge potential collaborations, and engage with Australia’s leading industry experts during a live Q&A session.

“The Industry Panel aims to discuss our predictions and expectations of the music industry in 2024,” Marino says. “With Cartel’s experience in label services and touring with both of our knowledge on the release cycle and digital media, songwriters will leave the event feeling equipped and ready to make their 2024 a year of growth and sustainability.”

Whether you’re a songwriter, producer, or creative looking for collaborators, this networking night is the place to be.

“Our networking events have proven to have created opportunities for hundreds of songwriters in the RSOM. Whether you are a songwriter, producer or creative looking for people to collaborate with, networking can lead to an abundance of opportunities including future collaborations and performances. We are proud that we have created a safe space for songwriters of all ages, genres, genders, backgrounds and experience levels to meet and many have met at our events and have gone on to write, record and release music together.

“It is also a place for songwriters to seek support from like-minded individuals and many have just really enjoyed being able to talk about music with many artists.”

Discounted tickets and free online admission are available to RSOM members, who enjoy a range of benefits including guaranteed performances, event discounts, Spotify playlist features, and more. Aspiring songwriters looking to join the RSOM community can sign up here.
