Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes

Making their name with full-bodied, hard-hitting punk rock reinforced with a hard rock undercurrent, Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes were formed in 2015 by Carter, former lead singer with the successful U.K. punk band Gallows.

Carter was a founding member of Gallows in 2005, but in 2011 he came to an impasse with the group over their musical direction. He left the band and debuted a new group, Pure Love, in 2012, whose sound was more indebted to mainstream rock and had a more positive lyrical stance.

Pure Love released a handful of singles and one album, 2013’s Anthems, but in April 2014, Carter announced the digital release of the group’s final recordings. In March 2015, Carter launched a new project, Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes, with Carter on lead vocals, Dean Richardson (formerly of Heights) on guitar, Thomas Mitchener (another alumnus of Gallows ) on bass, and Memby Jago (who’d previously worked with the Ghost of a Thousand) on drums.

With a sound that returned Carter to the forceful sound of Gallows , Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes made their recorded debut with the 2015 EP Rotten, and in August 2015 they dropped their first full-length album, Blossom. The band was soon touring regularly in the U.K. and Europe, and in 2016 they introduced a new lineup, with Mitchener and Jago replaced by a new rhythm section of drummer Gareth Grover (formerly of Gallows and Haunts ) and bassist Tom “Tank” Barclay.

Carter & the Rattlesnakes’ second album, Modern Ruin, was released in January 2017 and saw a slight return to the more melodic alt-rock sound the frontman had explored with Pure Love, with positive results — the album sold well, and the band was a major draw that year on the festival circuit. 2019’s End of Suffering, which included the bruising single “Crowbar,” continued in a similar vein.

With the tour for their previous album cut short by Covid-19, the band used the time throughout lockdown to write and produce their fourth record, 2021’s Sticky, which featured a guest appearance from Idles’ Joe Talbot on the lead track “My Town.”

Van Dieman

The Tasmanian devils known as Van Diemen are venturing to the mainland on their ‘Gallows ’24’ Tour. It’s their much anticipated first run of interstate shows and will see them bring their ferocious style of melodic black metal to life across Victoria this April.

The sound of Van Diemen embodies the cold and harsh nature of their new habit. Incorporating long lost Tasmanian mythology into the lyrics after moving to the isolated island in 2023. The tone in which these lyrics are delivered is reminiscent of their birthplace of Kiel, Germany. From the motherland to the mainland, they’re about to descend upon their neighbouring state for a handful of hectic shows.

Part of the Geelong show of the tour are Epic Death Metallers Stormtide, Ballarat based metal act Distorta and Corio Bay Area Thrashers Get Rekt.

Sammy White

It’s been a while since I’ve been out on the road with my own run of headline shows – and for the first time I’m bringing my band along for the ride too!

We’re hitting a bunch of towns up and down the East Coast, plus a few regional stops, that I’m really looking forward to.

This brand new song “Ain’t That The Way” is a taste of the new music I’ve got on the horizon. Come out for a night of Diamonds, Dolly & real Country As Cow Shit music.

I’m stoked to have special guest, Jarrad Wrigley supporting all of these shows…

And who knows, we might even be able to convince a few more special guests to make some appearances along the way too.

Confetti Western

Go Go Stop is the new hyper-pop dnb single by Confetti Western and to celebrate the release of the new dance anthem, the space cowboys are touring Victoria.

Confetti Western are renowned for their humorous and energetic live shows that bring every member of the crowd into their crazy orbit. The genre bending band seamlessly blends dance, hip-hop, rock and hyperpop into their sets and showcases this through their costume changes and spur of the moment bits.

The Go Go Stop tour comes off the back their guest spot supporting Battlesnake and playing Chi Wow Wah Town music festival. 2024, is set to see the group release their most pop focused music to date, adding to the insane lore that is Confetti Western.

Please join the group by coming dressed to the nine in your finest boot swinging attire.

Dress code: Y2K Cowpoke. Yeehawww!

With special guests Final Final and Dangerboots.

Ocean Grove’s Andrea Robertson brings her sonic journey full circle with the complete series of ‘Seasons’

For award-winning musician and local favourite Andrea Robertson, the ebb and flow of seasons isn’t merely a climatic shift; it’s a melodic expedition that has enraptured her devoted audiences since 2023.

Hailing from the coastal town of Ocean Grove and armed with a voice akin to liquid gold and a genre-defying approach that blends blues, roots, folk, rock, and alt-country, Robertson embarked on a unique musical endeavour in mid-2022, spurred by the receipt of an Arts Culture Heritage grant from the City of Greater Geelong. With a collection of songs primed for recording, she envisioned a departure from convention: a quartet of EPs released over a year, each synchronised with the changing seasons.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Under the guidance of Robertson and her son Heath, serving as sound engineer, recording commenced in the cosy confines of her Ocean Grove home studio. This venture, characteristic of Robertson’s soul-stirring trademark style, exuded intimacy, inclusivity, and boundless innovation.

Autumn heralded the long-awaited debut of the project with Seasons Volume 1, featuring three exquisite compositions. Coated in a golden warmth and promising to light a bright fire within, this release saw Robertson mature and truly hone in on her sound, returning to the fold with a delightful, expansive, and harmony-rich attitude.

With her soul-stirring melodies and poignant lyricism at the fore, Winter and Spring followed suit with Volume 2 and Volume 3, respectively, leading to the summery crescendo of Seasons Volume 4 in December 2023. Released digitally, each of these EPs comprised just three tracks in a deliberate move to reignite her music career, derailed by the pandemic’s unforeseen challenges.

“There’s an honesty and openness to the songwriting in some of these songs, that perhaps goes deeper than I’ve previously allowed myself to go,” she says. “Some songs are quite emotive, there is a real rawness and vulnerability about them. But I have intentionally tried to balance this out with some light-hearted tracks, for myself as well as for listeners.”

Robertson’s artistry, intertwined with the unique Seasons project, directly reflects the resilience, creativity, and the enduring potency of music. Her lyricism traverses the mundane and the extraordinary, subtly urging listeners to embrace life’s ebbs and flows. As articulated in the titular track of Volume 1, “Seasons they come, seasons they go. Sometimes we notice, sometimes we don’t. But they’re ever changing, it’s just how it goes.”

In addition to her musical odyssey, Robertson initiated a Pozible Pre-Order Campaign to gauge support for a vinyl release of the entire catalogue. The overwhelming response surpassed initial expectations, ensuring not only the fruition of vinyl editions but also a limited run of CDs for her devoted followers.

Now the culmination of this journey, marked by the physical launch of the complete series of Seasons on Vinyl and CD, returns to where it all began – the Queenscliff Brewhouse’s open-air Beer Garden on Sunday, 24 March, with Wayne Jury providing support.

Approaching almost a year since the inception of Seasons Volume 1, Robertson, an award-winning artist, is poised to reintroduce her soulful resonance to loyal fans. With plans for subsequent performances across Melbourne and Regional Victoria throughout April and May, alongside anticipated interstate ventures in 2024, Robertson eagerly anticipates sharing her musical evolution. As she reflects, “With each release, I feel like I’ve grown and stretched myself as an artist, and that’s exactly how it should be.”

The launch of the complete series of Seasons isn’t just a musical event; it’s an invitation to immerse oneself in Andrea Robertson’s all-encompassing sound, a testament to her unwavering dedication to her craft and her audience.

Lisa Gorman + Mirka Mora: A fusion of fashion and art at Warrnambool Art Gallery

The exhibition, on display until March 17, is a vibrant collaboration between Warrnambool-born designer and visual artist Lisa Gorman and iconic Australian painter Mirka Mora, curated by Warrnambool Art Gallery Director Aaron Bradbrook.

Returning to her hometown for this groundbreaking event, Lisa Gorman (known to many for her vibrant and collaborative designs for one of Australia’s most recognisable fashion labels Gorman which she founded in 1999 and remained as creative director before departing the business in 2021) expresses her excitement: “I hadn’t ever imagined that I would have ended up showing my personal work in Warrnambool Art Gallery. It’s quite exciting for the Gorman family.”

Stay up to date with what’s happening within the region’s art scene here

A celebration of Victorian art and design, the idea for the contemporary design exhibition was sparked by Bradbrook, who recognised the unique connection between Lisa and Mirka Mora, two pioneering and ground-breaking artists whose practices traverse generations and art forms. Lisa shares, “It’s really nice for me to be showing alongside Mirka Mora; it’s an incredible privilege. She’s one of the artists who I adore most, and having worked with her and known her personally, it’s a really special moment in my own career.”

LISA GORMAN + MIRKA MORA features select garments from their iconic 2016 and 2018 collaborations, together with Mirka’s rarely exhibited tapestries and neon ink works from the 1980s, renowned hypofictional doll-like creatures and beloved soft sculptures, works on paper and never-before-seen paintings directly from the Estate of Mirka Mora.

For this exclusive exhibition, Lisa also draws from her love of colour and experience with textiles, specifically the process of weaving to create a series of exquisite and illuminating large-scale acrylic sculptures, immersing visitors in a neon colour bomb of bouncing light and playful shapes.

Delving into her artistic journey, Lisa shares, “The opportunity to show in a public space brings out a whole lot of new ideas about the work. And for me that was scale; having an opportunity to show in a space that you could stand back from the work. And this particular work does rely on it,” Lisa explains.

Using translucent acrylic sheets, Lisa explores the elements of warp and weft and textile design.

“This work explores that junction between the warp and the weft threads and the colour that’s created. When you weave the threads, it all depends on which threads are on the top and which are on the bottom, the way that the yarn is twisted and where the light hits the yarn. This is an exploration of that, but rather than using textile and using thread and yarn, I’ve used translucent acrylic sheets,” she explains.

A post shared by WARRNAMBOOL ART GALLERY (@warrnamboolartgallery)

Lisa’s exploration of translucent acrylic sheets is a departure from her previous works. “It’s almost like you’ve got a magnifying glass and you’re looking really closely at that junction between the warp and the weft thread. And that moment is really out of the hands of the creator and somewhat left to the threads themselves as to what they do when they cross over,” she explains, highlighting the captivating play of colour and translucency.

French-born Australian artist Mirka Mora (1928-2018) was a beloved inspiration in the Australian art and culinary scene after arriving in the country in 1951. In 2016, Mirka alongside Lisa Gorman launched their collaboration for the Gorman label, adorning fashion and art lovers with Mirka’s extraordinary artwork and Lisa’s deeply creative style and fashion form.

The collaboration left a lasting impact on Lisa’s creative spirit. She describes Mirka as a “free spirit” whose exploration of various mediums deeply inspired her curiosity. “I’ve always been interested in different mediums. I think that that’s why ultimately I have collaborated with so many different artists, designers, and makers over the last few decades. I often felt like fashion for me was a curation of different collaborations really and I think that my need and desire to work with different materials was what caused that,” Lisa reflects, emphasising her fascination with different materials and mediums.

As the exhibition promises a diverse journey through Mirka’s and Lisa’s works, Lisa hopes visitors take away a sense of evolution. “Art and design can present itself in many different forms. You don’t necessarily need to work in one medium or even two throughout your career,” she encourages, inviting others to explore the boundless possibilities of artistic expression.

“In the way I was inspired by Mirka, and her breadth of work and breadth of materials, hopefully, this exhibition will inspire others too.”

In the spirit of the exhibition’s title, “To breathe with the rhythm of the heart,” Lisa Gorman’s neon wonders and Mirka Mora’s timeless creations converge in a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and the vibrant heartbeat of Australian art.

LISA GORMAN + MIRKA MORA is on at the Warrnambool Art Gallery until March 17, 2024. Find out more here

“We actually met during our high school production of ‘Hairspray’. From high school, we studied audio production in university and continued performing in shows, bands and events across Melbourne,” reflects Connor Absolum.

However, like many artists, their path was not without its challenges. After experiencing a period of burnout, the duo took a hiatus from music, stepping away from the spotlight to rediscover their passion and purpose.

“We stopped music all together for four years,” Connor explains, “after we got married, we relit our passion for music and created Mister Co.

Fast forward to today, and Mister Co. is on the brink of something extraordinary, offering a genre-blended experience that combines Oscar’s influences from big bands and musical theatre with Connor’s passion for anthem rock, soul, and pop.

With a string of successful releases under their belt, including the romantic ‘Tonight’, the flirty ‘Make You Feel Alright’, the electro-disco jam ‘Better Lives’ and the alt-rock number ‘Don’t Talk About It’, the duo has garnered well over 200,000 combined streams and earned acclaim from community radio stations like Joy FM. They recently took out first place at the Festival of Sails’ Emerging Arts stage and their music has even caught the attention of international audiences, with listeners tuning in from across the globe.

Husband duo Mister Co’s infectious ‘Make You Feel Alright’ is a flirty, funk-fuelled love song

But it’s not just their impressive accolades that set Mister Co. apart; it’s their authenticity and raw talent that truly shine through in every note they play. Whether it’s Connor’s soulful vocals or Oscar’s intricate musicianship, there’s an undeniable chemistry between them that elevates their music to new heights.

Already this year the duo have released two singles with RnB-pop track ‘Down Low’, featuring a collaboration with Melbourne-based artist Katherine, and ‘On This Journey’, the title track of their upcoming, highly-anticipated debut album.

With a captivating blend of pop, ballad, and folk elements, the single ‘On This Journey’ transports listeners on a sonic voyage, guided by the ethereal vocals of Ambraya. Her contribution adds a theatrical dimension to the song, evoking the grandeur of a Broadway stage production while retaining the intimacy of a heartfelt ballad.

“The title track ‘On This Journey’ is the final piece of the puzzle, a song that purely reflects the last 10 years together which is the concept of the album,” Connor explains. “Our favourite lyrics from the song are ‘warm like whiskey, with a glass of wine. Aged so fine’.”

It’s the perfect prelude to what listeners can expect the the debut album, On This Journey Vol 1, which is due for release on 4 May.

The album, recorded entirely in their home studio, promises to be a true reflection of their artistry, blending soulful vocals, modern-pop sensibilities, and heartfelt storytelling into a cohesive musical narrative. It will feature their previously released singles in a collection of songs that narrate their path from high school to the stage, culminating in their union as husbands.

“Whenever we had an idea, we would go straight in the studio and start developing it into a vibe and then into a song,” he shares. “The album is a 50/50 collaboration between us both, we threw the rule book out and wrote what felt right and really told our story, which resulted in a genre-fluid album!”

And what better way to celebrate their journey than with a debut headline show and album launch at The Night Cat on May 10th? Backed by a 13-piece band, Mister Co. will take the stage to perform tracks from their album, alongside select covers that have influenced their musical journey.

“This show is going to be epic. The show will reimagine all 10 tracks from the album with a few covers of songs that have heavily influenced us. We are giving this show everything we have and will be an example of what we are capable of, and what a place to perform at, the iconic The Night Cat.”

For Connor and Oscar, the stage is where they truly come alive, where their music takes on a life of its own and their passion shines brightest. It’s a chance to connect with their audience, to share their stories, and to inspire others to chase their dreams, no matter the odds.

So, as they continue to carve out their place in Melbourne’s vibrant music scene, one thing is clear: Mister Co. is a duo on the rise, destined for greatness. With their talent, passion, and unwavering dedication, there’s no telling how far they’ll go. And for music lovers everywhere, that’s something worth celebrating.

Inspired by the breathtaking landscapes and rich culture of Gunditjmara country, ‘Lorikeets’ is a testament to Whitney’s deep connection to her roots. Produced by the talented Billy Barker and mixed by Tim Harvey, the single emanates a haunting beauty that echoes throughout its four-minute duration. Whitney’s voice, reminiscent of Angel Olsen’s emotive resonance, carries a raw, organic quality, drawing listeners into a world of introspection and longing.

Across the entrancing single, Whitney’s delicate yet powerful vocals soar above lush instrumentation, creating a sonic tapestry that is as captivating as it is evocative. There’s a haunting quality to her delivery, as if each note is imbued with layers of longing and introspection, reminiscent of the likes of Julia Jacklin’s emotive storytelling. The backing vocals in the chorus elevate the song’s cathartic energy, adding depth and dimension to Whitney’s soul-stirring performance.

“Writing Lorikeets was an opportunity to celebrate the present moment and everything I already have and worked so hard for,” shares Whitney. “We live in a fast-paced world and always looking ahead to what’s next, writing this song was a nice opportunity to slow down and look at what was already around me.”

Recorded set amongst the rugged beauty of Gunditjmara country near Kilarney in Victoria’s beautiful southwest, Whitney’s sentiment encapsulates the essence of ‘Lorikeets’, being a song that invites listeners to pause and reflect on the beauty that surrounds them. In a world consumed by the pursuit of the next big thing, Whitney’s introspective lyrics serve as a poignant reminder to appreciate the present moment and cherish the blessings we often overlook.
