One of the greatest cures for COVID blues is the blessing that is music. Victoria-based duo This Way North already gave us one fine new track, ‘You Be You’ from their upcoming EP Vol. 3, and now they’re back with another cracker from the final in a series of EPs by the pair.
Again, guitarist Leisha Jungalwalla and drummer Cat Leahy share divine harmonies and a welcome sense of fun-fuelled escape.
‘Driving Roads’ hits the highway with purpose, propelled by tasty surf guitar and driving beats. The accompanying video is a quirky mini road movie reflecting the countless touring miles Jungalwalla and Leahy have clocked up in recent years. ‘Hector the Van’ plays indispensable third wheel as they roll from town to town.
Impossible to classify, TWN expertly balance the fresh with the familiar. Is it electro-pop? Is that a seasoning of Tex-Mex on the horizon? Unexpected twists and turns in rhythm and melody keep pace with the vibe as a whole. Their direction is unique, jubilant and infectious.
“Driving Roads is very much an ode to the open road, capturing our love for adventure and the excitement that comes with that—it’s so visceral. We love nothing more than taking a road we’ve never been on before,” says guitarist/singer Leisha Jungalwalla.
Recorded in Nashville in January 2020 and produced by Brad Jones (Skipping Girl Vinegar, Justin Townes Earle, Bob Evans), EP Vol. 3 loosens the shackles of isolation, reminding us of future adventures to be had.
How good will it be to crank up some tunes on the open road again!
