The synergies of Checkerboard Lounge’s origins and that of Aplegate is uncanny. From their stage skillset including their technical skills of instrumentation and improvisation, qualities that Checkerboard Lounge also pride themselves on, to their eclecticism and originality in composition, Aplegate are a young act about to join the same trajectory as Checkerboard Lounge.
Checkerboard Lounge are a group that feed into the roots, laying ground across blues and classic soul with a devotion to improvisation that makes them magical to experience live. Headed by Pannuzzo on drums and vocals, who is undoubtably revered as one of Australia’s greatest voices, with masterclasses in performance from Shannon Bourne, Tim Neal, and Zoë Frater, Checkerboard Lounge have buried their stake deep into the Australian music scene.
Their style been celebrated this year as the band have been recognised for their current ARIA-Award nominee album, SUN Sessions. Their multi-award-winning album, recorded at the legendary Sun Studio, Memphis, Tennessee, catapulted the band to nationwide recognition. Recent release ‘Roller Coaster’ shot to the top 5 of several national charts and has been getting reviews internationally as one of the top albums of 2024. An undeniable powerhouse, world class musicianship, dynamic, passionate and playful, Checkerboard are the very essence of a live music experience.
Touring ‘Roller Coaster’ throughout 2024, they’ve had standing ovations at Blues on Broadbeach festival, QLD, The Gum Ball, NSW, Adventure Bay Music fest, through a 12 date run of shows in New Zealand and soon to be heading to WA. The record has further landed them a slot on favourite festival lineup, Queenscliff Music Festival, which they will be playing in November.
It’s set to be an event to remember. Grab your tickets to see Checkerboard Lounge at Castlemaine’s Theatre Royal here.
