Ocean Grove craft brewery BrewiColo is closing its doors next month

Words by Staff Writer

The end of a delicious beer-filled era in Ocean Grove.

In an announcement that has sent ripples through the Ocean Grove community, local craft beer scene and beyond, BrewiColo Brewing Co., a beacon of craft beer and local culture, has declared it will be shutting its doors for the final time come 19th April. This news marks the end of a vibrant chapter in the local craft beer scene, one that has seen BrewiColo emerge not just as a brewery, but as a cornerstone of community spirit and artisanal excellence.

Founded on the shores of Victoria by Kay Godfrey and Chilla Tuicolo, BrewiColo represented more than just a business venture; it was a passion project that bloomed from the seeds of love, family, and a deep-rooted connection to Chilla’s Fijian heritage. The brewery’s name itself, a playful nod to Chilla’s surname, Tuicolo, encapsulates the warmth, inclusivity, and familial spirit that BrewiColo has stood for since its inception.

Over the past five years, BrewiColo has not only produced award-winning beers but has also played a pivotal role in promoting local live music and fostering a sense of community. From the laid-back charm of their Palm Ale to the full-bodied delight of their Baravi Lager, each brew has told a story, a testament to the journey and experiences of its creators. Their dedication to quality and community has seen the brewery host countless events, support local musicians, and become a cherished gathering spot for locals and visitors alike.

The decision to close, influenced by a combination of economic pressures and a desire to focus on family, has been met with a blend of sadness and understanding from the BrewiColo community. Chilla and Kay have navigated through challenges, including the tumultuous times of COVID-19, government reforms, and rising taxes, all while their family grew from three to six. The journey, as shared in their heartfelt farewell, has been one of joy, dedication, and hard-earned success, punctuated by the difficult decision to step back and cherish time with family.

“As a family-owned business, with no investors, we have poured our hearts, souls, sweat and tears into BrewiColo and have enjoyed every second of it! We have loved producing award-winning beers, hosting events, meeting and getting to know so many people. But as anyone in this industry knows it takes dedication, hard work, time and effort to keep a brewery operating and we have reached a point where it’s no longer sustainable for us to continue to operate,” the business shared on social media.

“A lot has happened both professionally and personally since we opened the brewery doors over 5 years ago. We’ve celebrated multiple beer awards, had a hell of a good time, navigated the business through COVID, relentless increases in government taxes, reforms and new schemes and now the latest economic conditions. Personally, we have grown from a family of 3 to 6 which is a major reason why we have made this decision.”

“Upon reflection we have mixed emotions, whilst it was not an easy decision to make, we are excited to spend more quality time as a family and create those special memories while our kids still want to spend time with us.”

As BrewiColo prepares for its final days, the doors remain open to those who wish to share one last beer and smile with Chilla, Kay, and the BrewiColo family. The brewery’s legacy, however, extends beyond the beers and the events. It lies in the connections made, the moments shared, and the impact on the Ocean Grove cultural landscape. BrewiColo’s closure is not just the end of a brewery; it’s the conclusion of a story that has deeply touched those who were part of its journey.

For those interested in a piece of BrewiColo’s history, the sale of their brewing and taproom equipment offers a unique opportunity to carry forward the spirit of craft brewing that BrewiColo epitomised.
