Presented exclusively at Geelong Gallery, this long-overdue survey brings together the acclaimed artist’s signature paintings and installations, curated across five gallery spaces. Whether you’re already familiar with Eaton’s work or coming to it fresh, there’s a lot to unpack—and plenty to be blown away by.
Janenne Eaton has been a powerful force in Australian art for decades—not just as a maker, but also as a mentor and teacher who’s helped shape generations of artists. Her work has always tackled big themes, from environmental change and political shifts to the overload of our digital age. She explores “how we live and our changing relationships to time, space and place,” with imagery that packs both visual punch and intellectual depth.
“Distilling four decades of my practice into a single exhibition offers an illuminating sense of fulfilment; one which obliges a confrontation with oneself, revealing connections between works, times, and ideas,” Eaton said of the show.
Curated by Jason Smith—former Director & CEO of Geelong Gallery and now helming the Art Gallery of South Australia—the exhibition will also feature her 1998 Geelong Contemporary Art Prize-winning work Screens and reflections: The Never Never.
From striking visual motifs to urgent commentary on society’s obsession with information and consumption, Eaton’s practice has always kept its finger on the pulse. And now, visitors can experience that full journey—from early experimentations to contemporary reflections—all under one roof.
