Bendigo is turning up the heat this autumn with the launch of Fiesta Bendigo, a vibrant, city-wide celebration inspired by the legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
The event kicked off in March, marking the arrival of the Australian-exclusive exhibition Frida Kahlo: In Her Own Image at the Bendigo Art Gallery.
And make no mistake — this is way more than just an art show.
The whole town is getting in on the action, with over 90 Frida- and Mexican-themed events and experiences lighting up Bendigo and surrounds through to 13 July, 2025. From colourful murals and lively street installations to food trails and fiesta-themed beers, it’s all about soaking up the spirit of Frida in every corner of the city.

At the heart of it all is the Frida Kahlo: In Her Own Image exhibition — a rare and deeply personal look at one of the 20th century’s most iconic artists. Featuring an extraordinary collection of Kahlo’s personal belongings — including her clothing, make-up, medical items and accessories — the show offers a unique glimpse into her life and self-expression. Most of the pieces are on loan from Mexico’s famed Museo Frida Kahlo (La Casa Azul), and they’ve never before been seen in Australia.
This is more than just an art exhibition — it’s a chance to explore the powerful way Kahlo crafted her identity through bold fashion, vivid make-up, and even the design of her medical prosthetics. Sealed away for half a century after her death, these personal items now reveal a whole new layer of Kahlo’s story — one of resilience, rebellion, and radical self-love.
Tacos, Beers, and a Whole Lot of Colour
But this is Bendigo — and they’re not stopping at the gallery doors. The whole city is getting a makeover worthy of Frida herself.
Expect to see bright bunting, massive murals, and eye-popping installations all over town, including the city’s beloved Bendigo sign in Rosalind Park and a special tribute installation called “VIVA”, inspired by Kahlo’s final painting Viva La Vida.
Hungry? You’re in luck. Fiesta Bendigo is launching a Taco Trail, and it’s exactly as tasty as it sounds. More than 20 local venues will be serving up their most mouthwatering taco creations — from meaty classics to zingy vegan options — and you get to vote on your favourite. There’s even a chance to win a $1000 VIP weekend in Bendigo just for eating tacos. Now that’s a competition we can get behind.
Even the local brewers are joining the party. Bendigo Brewing is whipping up a Frida-inspired taco woodfire pizza (yes, you read that right), while Cornella Brewery is dropping a new beer for the occasion — the Rancho Cerveza Mexican Lager, brewed just for the Fiesta.
So whether you’re an art lover, a foodie, or just someone who loves a good party, Bendigo is the place to be this March through July.
Come for Frida, stay for the Fiesta — and maybe pack some stretchy pants for that taco trail.
