Banksy is arguably the most iconic street artist in the world, and his (or her) identity is just as sought after as the pieces themselves. Luckily a car park in Melbourne will play host to more than 80 Banksy pieces (some of which have never been shown to the public) owned by private collectors thanks to the curator Steve Lazarides.
Known for promoting street artists, Lazarides worked with Banksy early in his career and is one of the few people in the world who knows the artist’s true identity.
The exhibition includes the iconic pieces ‘Girl with Balloon’, ‘Flag Wall’, ‘Laugh Now pieces’ and many others from over 40 private collections. Art from well-known and up-and-coming street artists will also be on show on surfaces around the exhibition.
Outside the exhibition there will be food trucks curated by Welcome to Thornbury and live DJs, heightening the summer Melbourne vibe.
“This exhibition is a one off – never will you be able to see this amount of work in one place again,” Lazarides says. Once the show is over, the artwork will dissipate back to the other 40 collectors around the world, and the likelihood of them being brought together again in the future is very slim.”
