This one’s for long-time The Simpsons fans.
Thanks to the ongoing quarantine, boredom being at an all time high and creative’s finding new ways to adapt, some absolute legend has made a playable version of The Simpson’s iconic video game Lee Carvello’s Putting Challenge.
It’s been nearly 25 years since the episode – Season 7, Episode 11 “Marge Be Not Proud” – featuring the game first aired. If you don’t quite remember the iconic episode like a true die-hard fan would, Bart gets caught attempting to steal a copy of the ultra-violent, ultra-popular “Bonestorm” video game (based on the Mortal Kombat franchise) that his mother Marge refused to buy him for Christmas. After the initial disappointment (and a slot of scolding) from Marge, the two reconcile and Marge gives Bart his Christmas present, a copy of the video game “every boy wants” – the “Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge.”
Thanks to Aaron Demeter, a graduate student in Communication and Culture at Ryerson University and most likely big Simpsons fan, we now have it in the form of a browser-based game, where gamers have their own choice between a putter or a 3-wood and a feather touch or a power drive. Staying true to the original concept of the game, the game is just as terrible as it looks in the episode and it even uses the original audio files from the episode.
Brilliant though, absolutely brilliant. You can play the game here.
The game even got a shout out on Twitter from Bill Oakley, former Simpsons writer and co-showrunner (with Josh Weinstein), so that’s pretty rad.
