From Geelong to LA (and back again): A night with Jarrah Gurrie and Friends of Geelong Waterfront Film at the Barwon Club

words by staff writer

There’s something a little bit magic about hometown heroes, especially when they’ve made it big on the world stage. And even better when they come home with stories to tell.

That’s exactly what’s happening this month at the much-loved Friends of Geelong Waterfront Film Meet Up – and trust us, this one’s a must.

Friends of Geelong Waterfront Film Meet Up

  • When: Wednesday, 28 May
  • Where: Barwon Club, Geelong
  • Tickets: here

Stay up to date with what’s happening within the region’s art scene here.

Jarrah Gurrie is making a return to his roots, landing at the Barwon Club for an evening of chat, connection, and cinema-fuelled inspiration. It’s part of the “Unlocking the Secrets: What We Wish We Knew” series, which has already become a bit of a local legend for creatives and film lovers alike.

So, who’s Jarrah? A motion picture editor and director who cut his teeth in Melbourne’s edgy experimental film scene back in the early 2000s, Jarrah’s creative journey took him all the way to the bright lights of Los Angeles. His resumé reads like a pop culture playlist – we’re talking visual work for Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Ricky Martin, and Cirque du Soleil’s MJ One show in Vegas among a number of film projects. Not bad for a local lad from Geelong.

This meet up is your chance to get behind the curtain and hear what the LA scene is really like – the good, the gritty, and the gold. Jarrah will be in conversation with Geelong Waterfront Film Director, Chris Bryan, digging into the lessons learned, creative highs, and the secrets he wishes he’d known from the start.

It’s not just about listening, either. These nights are known for being friendly, fun, and full of the kind of people you actually want to meet. Expect relaxed vibes, warm welcomes, and plenty of chat with fellow creatives and industry folk who love film just as much as you do.

The Barwon Club, with its cosy, no-fuss charm, is the perfect setting. Add in some tasty finger food (yes, there’s pizza, chicken sticks, and veggie delights courtesy of the legends at Bayview Tech), and you’ve got yourself a pretty sweet Wednesday night.

Whether you’re deep in the industry or just film-curious, this one’s for you. Come for the inspiration, stay for the stories – and maybe even score a few tips on how to make it in LA (or wherever your creative dreams take you).
