The Potato Shed launch must-see 2022 season filled with music, theatre, comedy, circus and cabaret

WORDS BY ALICE RUBY MCDONALD

After a couple years like no other, the Potato Shed is presenting a season like no other.

Drysdale’s beloved Potato Shed has revealed its stellar program for 2022 combining music, storytelling, comedy, drama, captivating circus and extravagant cabaret for an extraordinarily diverse and mesmerising return to the stage.

Alongside some brand-new shows, the 2022 season features a handful of productions postponed from 2021 including Margaret Fulton: the Musical; Dahlin! It’s the Jeanne Little Show; Mother & Son, and REBEL, a high octane, live circus theatrical tour de force, inspired by the genius of David Bowie.

The season is set to open on Saturday, February 19 when the world-famous Finucane & Smith return with their smash-hit sell-out Travelling Dance Hall for an evening of partial nudity, haze, loud music and ABBA!

April will transport you back to the 80s when INXSIVE hits the Shed. Australia’s leading INXS Tribute Act gives you the opportunity to experience both the music and live show that established INXS as one of Australia’s most successful music imports. Established in 1997 by lead singer David Graham, INXSIVE have been touring their full production show through pubs, nightclubs, theatres, private and corporate functions, festivals and larger outdoor events, both locally and nationally to largely sold-out audiences, attracting critical acclaim for their performances. A must-see for any INXS fan.

In May, VCE drama playlist shows include SLAP.BANG.KISS! by Dan Gioannoni, presented by Melbourne Theatre Company and Jack and Millie, and written by Alaine Beek the play deals with the trauma of life-threatening health issues.

Kutcha Edwards will head to the Potato Shed for the first time on May 19 with Circling Time – Songs & Stories, a show that depicts Edwards’ life as a renowned First Nations singer/songwriter and proud Mutti, Yorta Youra and Nari man.

Later that same month, a reimagined Jekyll and Hyde, presented by A Slightly Isolated Dog, will invite the audience to help tell this slightly bonkers rendition of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson tale.

In July, Dancebourne Arts will present Five Elements, a revised successful programme of original and new independent dance choreographies by Gareth Belling, Sara Di Segna, Luanne Hyson, Kathleen Skipp & Shannon Prickett. Five Elements explores with classical and contemporary dance responses the five great universal elements: earth, water, fire, air and void.

Barbaroi will take to the stage in October for a blend of high-octane circus, cabaret theatre. Complimented by finely tuned lighting and soundtrack, this show will lead audiences down the rabbit-hole and asking, ‘Who are the Barbaroi?’

The hugely popular comedian turned playwright Damian Callinan returns with Mayor for a Day in October, who creates a leaner, funnier, one-man local government service, that will linger long in the memories of those who sit in the gallery.

The season launch also includes the world premiere of Rick Springfield Late, Late at Night on May 7, which is a new stage adaptation of Rick Springfield’s compelling and searing memoir, the New York Times best-seller, Late, Late at Night and in June there will be two unique nights of cosy entertainment in the form of one-act plays from our talented local playwrights and performers. Live music, mulled wine and warm fires will be silhouetted against the starry night sky.

Other shows include Jack and Millie, Into The Woods Jnr, Sun Rising – The Songs That Made Memphis, Jude Pearl – Participation Award, Club Soda, Dave Cosma and Charles Jenkins World Tour of Australia, Legends of Vegas, Pl@n B Trivia Cabaret, Practically Perfect The Julie Andrews Story, Spookfest!, and a performance from Geelong’s medal-winning a cappella women’s choir, Geelong Harmony Chorus, among many others.

With the ever-popular Morning Showtime; and annual school holiday programmes, you will be booking each and every show on the 2022 Potato Shed Season.
