In March 2024, The Lume, in collaboration with Webuild, is set to present Leonardo da Vinci: 500 Years of Genius.

Melbourne’s favourite immersive digital gallery, The Lume, has announced a brand new exhibition, set to debut in March next year.

Presented by Webuild, Leonardo da Vinci: 500 Years of Genius aims to offer a distinctive encounter with the works of the Renaissance master on a canvas that challenges the traditional art-viewing experience.

Leonardo da Vinci, a polymath renowned for his contributions as an artist, inventor, scientist, philosopher and musician, is the focal point of this exhibition.

500 Years of Genius brings forth masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper on The Lume’s massive screens, allowing for a closer inspection of their details compared to conventional museum settings.

This multi-sensory exhibition takes visitors through a chronological journey, reconstructing the atmosphere of the Renaissance in locations like Florence, Venice, and Milan. Engaging various senses — sight, sound, scent, touch, and taste — the experience aims to provide a nuanced understanding of Leonardo’s inspirations and innovations.

Central to the exhibit is a display of 50 machine inventions crafted based on Leonardo’s sketches, on loan from the Museo Leonardo da Vinci in Rome.

These inventions, including flying machine concepts predating human flight by over 400 years, showcase the genius of da Vinci and offer visitors a tangible connection to the Renaissance spirit.

The exhibition also highlights the work of French Optical Engineer Pascal Cotte, known for his multispectral camera. In Mona Lisa Revealed, Cotte’s camera peels back the layers of the iconic painting, unveiling hidden details.

Visitors will witness Cotte’s discoveries, including the only exact 360º replica of the Mona Lisa, providing a unique perspective for both admirers and those seeking an alternative to crowded museums.

Leonardo da Vinci: 500 Years of Genius at The Lume offers an immersive journey through the mind of a master, providing a unique opportunity to connect with the enduring legacy of one of history’s greatest creative minds.
