The first comprehensive solo survey of the celebrated street artist’s career is being exhibited in his hometown of Geelong.
Acclaimed for his major transformations of abandoned spaces worldwide, Rone (the artistic alias of Tyrone Wright) returns to his hometown of Geelong with his first survey exhibition and a unique and immersive experience set to delight audiences in 2021.
Showcasing works from an artist who has built an exceptional reputation for large-scale wall paintings and immersive installations that explore concepts of beauty and decay, the highly anticipated exhibition – Rone In Geelong – was originally due to run in mid-2020 but has now been rescheduled to open in February 2021.
With Geelong having a special place in Rone’s heart, this will be the first comprehensive solo survey of the artist’s work, spanning early stencils and photographs of his street murals which have transformed abandoned spaces all over the world.
Geelong Gallery has also commissioned Rone to transform one of its most significant rooms – the Douglass Room – to reflect the gallery’s architecture, history and collection. Rone will work with interior stylist Carly Spooner to revamp the room, drawing additional inspiration from Venetian palazzos and trompe l’œil paintings (a painting technique that creates the illusion of three dimensions). True to form, the room will also feature an aloof-looking mural of a woman plus a haunting soundtrack by composer Nick Batterham.
RONE in Geelong will now run from February 27 to May 16 2021 at the Geelong Gallery.
