Music legend Russell Morris brings symphonic concert The Real Things back to Melbourne

Words by Staff Writer

The Aussie legend will take to the stage in a symphonic celebration of his stellar music career.

Living legend Russell Morris is gearing up for a symphonic spectacular that’s poised to make waves across Australia. Following two sold-out extravaganzas at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall and Melbourne’s Hamer Hall, the star is back for an encore in Melbourne, and he’s not stopping there – he’s spreading the magic to Adelaide and Perth this October and November.

Russell Morris, renowned for his trailblazing contributions to the music world, will headline “The Real Thing” at Hamer Hall on October 31. The Crown Theatre in Perth is set to reverberate on Saturday, November 11, and the Adelaide Festival Theatre will be in the spotlight on Friday, November 17.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

In a spectacular marriage of his iconic tunes and the ethereal sounds of an orchestra, Morris will be joined by a 54-piece orchestra and a 10-member band. This orchestral journey will not just sweep through his hits like “Hush” and “Sweet, Sweet Love,” but also delve into his blues trilogy, starting with the critically acclaimed No.1 album “Sharkmouth” in 2012.

And it’s no ordinary orchestra – it’s been orchestrated by none other than David Hirschfelder, the two-time Academy Award nominee and BAFTA awardee, famous for his work on films like “Shine” and “Elizabeth.” Morris exclaims, “Performing my songs in front of 65 musicians in July was a career highlight that I could never have imagined. David Hirschfelder has done a spectacular job turning my songs into orchestral arrangements, they sound truly amazing!”

The concert is not just a musical journey, but also a storytelling experience, as Morris shares unheard tales from his extraordinary life. A member of the ARIA Hall of Fame and the Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame, Russell Morris has adorned the Australian music scene for over five decades. His enduring dedication was recognized with the Order of Australia in 2018.

For those who can’t make it to the concert, fret not, because “The Real Thing – Symphonic Concert,” recorded in Melbourne this July, is set for release on Friday, August 18, via all streaming platforms. The album will follow, arriving on Friday, October 6, as a captivating 2CD album set. So, whether you’re a vinyl enthusiast or a digital devotee, there’s something for everyone.
