The 2022 National Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence were held on Monday 28 November at Gambaro Function Centre in Brisbane.
Earlier this year, locally-owned Mavs Greek Restaurant was named the best Greek restaurant in Victoria and Tasmania.
Named from the owner’s family name Mavromoustakos and meaning ‘black moustache’, Mavs took out the Greek crown at this year’s Restaurant & Catering Awards for Excellence back in July.

Held annually, The Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence gives restaurants, cafes and caterers across the country well-deserved recognition for their hard work, exceptional food and outstanding service in this vibrant industry. The Awards are held in each state (with Victoria and Tasmania combined into one), recognising operators in metropolitan and regional centres, and are the only industry awards with an independent judging system of 280 judges reporting to state Judge Chairs and a National Chief Judge.
Having topped the state in their category, Mavs went on to represent Victoria and Tasmania at the 2022 National Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence, held on Monday 28 November at Gambaro Function Centre in Brisbane.
Up against some of the very best Greek restaurants across the country, Mavs took out the Bronze prize, well and truly putting Geelong’s only authentic Greek eatery firmly on the map.
Offering a sojourn around the Mediterranean without the airfare, the local Greek restaurant came in just behind Sydney eatery JAAKS Restaurant and Bar (who claimed silver) and ESTIA Restaurant in Henley Beach, South Australia who took out gold.

Alongside the best Greek restaurant, the awards also recognised Australia’s best steak restaurant, best Italian restaurant, best restaurant in a winery, best French restaurant and best Asian restaurant, among many others.
Joining Mavs in representing Victoria, Branded Burgers and Bar in Seville, Primary @ Pioneers Park in Berwick, Spice Temple in Southbank, Nice Buns by YOMG in Berwick, Kisume in Melbourne, Society in Melbourne, Cape Restaurant at RACV Resort Cape Schanck, Stokehouse Restaurant in St Kilda, Higher Mark at Geelong Cats, Oriental Teahouse Chapel Street, and Delaware North, among others, also took home top prizes.
