How to get your hands on the best authentic Banh Mi in Geelong

Words by Alice McDonald

Probably the greatest combining of cultures in a dish known to man.

Crispy French baguette combined with the mouth-watering fresh flavours of Vietnamese veggies and meats. The Banh Mi is your boring salad roll on steroids. There’s nothing quite like it.

From the moment you wrap your hands around it, you’re transported to another realm – a world of melt-in-your-mouth flavours and crisp, crunchy bread. What everyone needs is some real, authentic Vietnamese and that is what we at Forte have curated for you.

Have I reeled you in yet? Here are the top spots for your Banh Mi in Geelong.

Viet Rolls Geelong

Tucked away in the heart of Geelong’s Malop Street, the peaceful ambience is the perfect setting for you to get crunching down on their famous pork Banh Mi.

Available in town or easily delivered to your door, Viet Rolls Geelong has all your Banh Mi cravings sorted and can even throw in some dumplings if you’re still feeling peckish. You can get your hands on pork, chicken, duck, Vietnamese sausage, beef, veg or even ham which is an ode to your old school lunches but much, much better.

Their French X Vietnamese style patisseries are the perfect after-lunch sweet treat.

At the moment the website ordering is closed, but is still available to visit or call in for your Vietnamese hunger cravings.

The classic: Roll’d.

You can never go wrong with a Roll’d Banh Mi. There’s a reason it’s a favourite of so many. All freshly made, with crisp veggies and succulent meats, Roll’d in the Westfield on Malop Street will never fail you.

This fast, fresh Vietnamese Banh Mi is all authentic in flavours with options from tofu, lemongrass beef and of course roast pork crackling can be included. What more do I need to say. While you’re at it, try out some of the famous ‘soldiers’, rice paper rolls of the greatest range and variety.

Old man pho Geelong

While you’re still in Westfield on Malop Street and for some reason Roll’d didn’t take your fancy, look no further than Old Man Pho Geelong.

With rave reviews, customers adore the quick service and complete authenticity of the flavours. Although technically of the appearance of a ‘fast food’ restaurant, you really can’t call this your traditional fast food when it is that fresh and healthy.

Top One French Hot Bread

They say the best Banh Mi spots are the ones you least expect.

Not as ‘high-end’ looking as these previous options but as all Banh Mi experts know, the family-run Vietnamese will knock your socks off. Top One French Bread is straight to the point: amazing bread. Right near Johnstone Park, many are claiming this hails the best Banh Mi in Geelong.

This is also a complete wheelchair friendly option and has plenty of vegetarian offers for our plant-based foodies.

Bun U Bakery

As any Geelong local knows, Bun U bakery is completely dedicated to the Banh Mi lifestyle.

Here, you’re spoiled for choice with seven varieties of bánh mì on offer, all for under $9. There’s roast pork, marinated BBQ pork, lemongrass BBQ chicken, and beef meatball, all for $8 or the cold cut meats, tofu for the herbivores and even a breaky Vietnamese sandwich with egg for $7.

VN Rolls

Don’t worry I didn’t forget – I wouldn’t even dare to leave this cult classic out of the list.

Nestled amongst the Watson Road shopping strip, sitting beside one of the last remaining NQR stores in Geelong is VN Rolls – Bakery and Café – I’ll abbreviate to VN Rolls – a Vietnamese bakery with hints of Australian takeaway shop tradition that has been moved to the wayside in previous decades.

The incredible value is obviously what draws the mountains of people who line up each day, it’s the number one spot for people from all walks of life to get their hands on a scrumptious pork Banh Mi.

Honourable mentions

Bay City Noodles

For some authentic, can’t-go-wrong Vietnamese Pho, Bay city Noodles is your next best option to a Banh Mi.
