Geelong’s newest online florist Flowerkind understands that it’s the gesture that counts

Words by Talia Rinaldo

Founder Amie Maclean is on a mission to normalise giving flowers 'just because'.

Nothing brightens a room up (or one’s mood) like a fresh bouquet. As a dining table centrepiece, on your dresser or in the living room, flowers bring a pop of colour to a room, convey sympathies or love, and cheer you up on a down day.

Inspired by the ability to boost happiness, fresh flowers from Geelong’s newest online florist, Flowerkind, provide an instant hit.

Based in Armstrong Creek, Flowerkind founder Amie Maclean has been moved by florals her entire life. It wasn’t until four years ago that she explored floristry as a creative outlet, which quickly saw her fall in love with the craft.

Fast forward to 2021, the 27-year-old leapt from managing a small local florist in Geelong to starting her own flower delivery business in July of this year, hoping to bring a little piece of sunshine into the lives of the local community.

Inspired by two of her favourite things in life, she landed on the name ‘Flowerkind’, a play on flowers and kindness.

“I enjoy creating unique arrangements for different people and expressing myself through various colours and textures,” Amie says.

“But I think my favourite part is seeing acts of kindness and the gesture of giving in action – from handwriting a customer’s heartfelt card message to the smile on a person’s face when I hand them their blooms (I love, love!).”

Delivering fresh blooms across Geelong, Flowerkind offers a selection of unique floral arrangements, indoor plants and seasonal cut flowers. Her style is bright and bursting with life, with eye-catching colour at the forefront. Each arrangement is made up of locally grown fresh cut flowers – direct from Geelong Flower Farm – and wrapped in a beautiful white textured paper, or a glass vase if you desire.

You can browse by specific florals like roses, tulips, oriental lilies, sunflowers or Chrysanthemum disbuds; a unique range of posy style flower arrangements; or let Amie work her magic with gorgeous custom arrangements.

“I wanted to create a range where there’s something for every occasion – anniversaries, baby showers, birthdays, sympathies etc. But you don’t always need a reason to brighten someone’s day so we’re on a mission to normalise giving flowers ‘just because’, and the positive vibe from bright flowers makes them the best kind of unexpected gift.”

Alongside the beautiful blooms and indoor plants (which come wrapped in 100% jute hessian with Flowerkind signature ribbon), you can also purchase luxe add-ons that will truly leave a lasting impression. You’ll find the most perfectly-packaged soy candles from Sopo Candle Co, a family operated business in the Bellarine Peninsula that create handcrafted candles for the store. Scents include Nag Champa, Mademoiselle, Watermelon lemonade, Japanese Honeysuckle and Lime & Coconut.

“We also sell wine from Little Ripples where from every bottle someone buys, one person in a developing community is provided with a year of clean water,” Amie adds. The wine is vegan friendly and you can choose from Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rose, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.

Operating solely online, Amie puts her heart and soul into every single order that comes through, souring, creating and hand-delivering every order herself.

“Flowerkind is currently a one-woman show! Being an online-only Geelong flower delivery service means I get to manage the customer and recipient experience from start to finish myself.

“I love that I get to source, create and hand-deliver every order myself – I’m a bit of a perfectionist!”

Without the need for a physical shop, Amie reduces flower waste: she doesn’t need to keep a large amount of stock at all times, where inevitably a lot of flowers die before being bought, ending up in the bin.

Instead, the new farm-to-vase flower service only sources flowers after orders are placed, which means Amie doesn’t waste any flowers and also means recipients receive the freshest blooms possible.

The best thing about this new business is that Amie is all about making the world a better place, one kind gesture at a time. To do so, Amie created the very simple but incredibly wholesome ‘random acts of flowerkindness’. Here, customers can add on a ‘random act of flowerkindness’ to their order which sees Amie deliver a single flower to a random person in the Geelong community to brighten their day.

“I think there’s something magical about receiving flowers for no reason and when it’s least expected, which is essentially why I created random acts of flowerkindness,” Amie says.

“We’ve sold over 30 acts of flowerkindness to date and feedback from the community has been amazing!
