Geelong’s Great Australian Beer Festival has officially cancelled their 2021 event

Brb, crying.

Sad news beer lovers of Geelong – the Great Australian Beer Festival has officially been cancelled for 2021.

Can we get a ‘fuck covid’?

Taking to social media on Tuesday, the team at Great Australian Beer Festival Geelong shared the heartbreaking news about their forthcoming event, which was slated to go ahead on Saturday, January 16 2021.

“Sadly Johnstone Park will be without us for 2021, as we have decided against running our ninth instalment of GABF Geelong this coming summer,” the post to Facebook read.

“Restrictions on mass gatherings, in some shape or form, will be with us for the near future and thus the uncertainty surrounding the type of event we can deliver has led us to this decision.

“We will be back in January 2022, with an extra year of planning and a festival of good beer and great times.”

The Great Australian Beer Festival (GABF) and beer lover’s paradise originally announced their plans to return next year back in July, when we were all emerging from the first lockdown.

However, no one could have predicted what was to come, with a second wave, hard lockdowns across the state and a slew of restrictions on our day to day activities.

Regularly attracting a crowd of around 5000 for an afternoon of craft beer tasting and education, brewing demos, top local food and live music, with breweries attending from around the country, the festival has become an annual favourite amongst Geelong locals.

It’s shattering news for us all but sets up what will be a much-anticipated 2022 return.

We’ll miss you, GABF – see you next year.
