Geelong Gallery's 2024 exhibition program presents an array of captivating curated projects.

Geelong Gallery has set the stage for a compelling year ahead with its 2024 exhibition programme, promising a diverse range of captivating curated projects that span the spectrum of artistic expression.

Geelong Gallery’s major ticketed exhibition for the year features famed contemporary Australian painter and printmaker Cressida Campbell (born 1960) and groundbreaking modernist painter and printmaker Margaret Preston (1875–1963), on display from 18 May.

Major Exhibition: Cutting Through Time—Cressida Campbell, Margaret Preston and the Japanese Print (18 May to 28 July 2024)

The major highlight of the year is an exhibition featuring the works of renowned contemporary Australian painter and printmaker Cressida Campbell alongside groundbreaking modernist Margaret Preston. Cutting Through Time delves into the influence of Japanese woodblock prints (Ukiyo-e) on these significant Australian artists. An exploration of artistic connections, the exhibition provides a unique perspective on the convergence of cultures and influences. Tickets for this not-to-be-missed exhibition are already on sale.

Dianne Fogwell—Prescience (23 March to 28 July 2024)

Before that, in late March, Geelong Gallery will express gratitude to donors with an exhibition titled Dianne Fogwell—Prescience. The showcase features a multi-panelled installation by Fogwell, presenting a panoramic view of the Australian landscape. Through meticulous hand-printed panels, Fogwell captures the beauty and fragility of the environment, emphasizing the impact of climate change. The installation is accompanied by a musical composition, creating an immersive experience for visitors.

The O’Donohue & Kiss Gift (23 March to 21 July 2024)

This diverse selection of works, sourced from generous gifts by local collectors Conrad O’Donohue and Rosemarie Kiss, presents historical and contemporary prints and drawings by Australian and international artists. The exhibition reflects the varied interests of the donors, featuring artists like Rick Amor, Honore Daumier, Jim Dine, and more.

Forewarning (Act 4): Demarcation—Jacobus Capone (23 March to 28 July 2024)

The recently acquired dual-channel video work Demarcation by Jacobus Capone unfolds directly at the base of an unstable glacial face in Norway. This act in Capone’s ongoing project, Forewarning, addresses contemporary environmental concerns, drawing on art historical traditions of the sublime. The exhibition prompts reflection on the delicate balance between nature and human intervention.

Future Creatives 2024 (9 March to 5 May 2024)

Geelong Gallery continues to support emerging artists with Future Creatives 2024, an exhibition celebrating the creative achievements of young artists from the region who completed their Victorian Certificate of Education in 2023. This annual showcase provides a platform for the talents of emerging artists in Geelong and its surrounding areas, fostering their professional development in art and design.

Double Vision—Mapping Dürer in a Time of Crisis: Raymond Arnold and Ian Westacott (27 July to 27 October 2024)

This collaborative exhibition by Raymond Arnold and Ian Westacott responds to Albrecht Dürer’s master engraving, Melencolia I (1514). Inspired by the contemporary resonances of Dürer’s work, the artists present a suite of etchings produced during the COVID-19 lockdowns, reflecting on its relevance to our current time.

2024 Geelong Contemporary Art Prize (10 August to 3 November 2024)

August brings the biennial award exhibition, the 2024 Geelong Contemporary Art Prize, showcasing the diversity and excellence of Australian contemporary painting practice. Alongside, the MAKE Awards in collaboration with the Australian Design Centre will celebrate innovation in contemporary craft and design on a national stage.

Rauschenberg & Johns—Significant Others (16 November 2024 to 9 February 2025)

The year concludes with a National Gallery touring exhibition exploring the significant artistic dialogue between Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, two of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Rauschenberg & Johns—Significant Others draws upon the National Gallery’s Kenneth Tyler Collection of prints produced between 1968 and 1973, offering a glimpse into the private creative dialogue that shaped their lifelong practices.
