Call for First Nations Artists: Be a Part of Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre’s artistic tapestry

Words by staff writer

Expressions of Interest are being sought from First Nations artists living in Victoria to create artwork that will be incorporated in the Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre.

In a significant opportunity for First Nations artists, Expressions of Interest (EOI) are now open to contribute to the design narratives and artistic expression of the forthcoming Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre.

The project, a key element of the Geelong City Deal, aims to integrate cultural heritage and local identity into its design, with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation playing a crucial role in shaping the precinct.

The Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre is poised to be a transformative asset for Geelong, contributing to the city’s waterfront appeal and serving as a gateway to the central business district. With a commitment from all levels of government, the project aims to bolster local employment, tourism, and the overall visitor economy.

The core vision for this project is deeply rooted in a connection to Country and its people, with a focus on collaboration with the Wadawurrung and First Nations People. By extending an invitation to First Nations Artists, the aim is to create a space that is not only visually stunning but also rich in meaning and transformative.

Artists will be required to use the Wadawurrung narrative as inspiration and guidance to prepare an Artist Design response.

The design period is set to commence on Thursday, 8th March, with the design development phase concluding on 17th June 2024. During the design period, selected artists are expected to attend regular design meetings, work collaboratively with the project team, and provide work-in-progress updates to ensure the artistic concept aligns with the overall project design.

The completion of each artist opportunity is anticipated in 2025, varying based on location and medium chosen.

Artists are encouraged to express interest in specific opportunities during the EOI process.

An information session is scheduled for Wednesday, 7th February, from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm at Murran First Nations Hub, 143-157 Malop Street, Geelong. A live stream of the session will also be available via built.events.

The EOI window is set to close on Friday, 16th February 2024, at 2:00 pm. Aspiring artists can submit their expressions of interest via this link. For additional information, inquiries can be directed to [email protected].
