Ballarat Blog #677

Whilst the weather has been far from Spring-like, there has been lots to holler about up here in the Goldfields.

Midnight Oil were at their dynamic best on a recent visit to Hanging Rock where yours truly snagged a ticket at the last minute. What a night! Apart from Victoria doing it’s usual “freeze ya butt off” thing after sunset, the night was one to remember with a special mention to The John Butler trio who really impressed with a fabulous set as support act. The Oils are in their early 60’s but showed no signs of slowing down with a super-charged set of all the crowd favourites. Even Back On The Borderline got a run for every third person who was wearing a Head Injuries T-shirt!

Back closer to home, there are plenty of gigs to get along to and who better to rock along to than Kingswood. Coming to Karova Lounge on Friday November 17, the trio will be punching out their alternative rock to promote their Kingswoodus Maximus Tour. With four sell-out shows in the North of Oz, the lads are well and truly fired up to warm the spirits of the Ballarat folk. Splendour In The Grass just played host to these Melbourne boys, so they are hot to trot. $30 to get in. Going fast too!

Good Wives, Runk, The Creeks and Quentiam are putting on a big show at Karova Lounge on November 18 called Summer’s Comin’. The Good Wives have worked hard to produce their EP Pride Respect Responsibility, named after the values of Ballarat High school where the music was recorded in the state of the art studio. The CD can be pre-ordered through Bandcamp, or my guess would be that you could buy one at the gig. $10 to get in!

The Bennies sound like a whole lot of fun and their sound draws you in quite quickly. Some real playfulness with their lyrics and sound and Natural Born Chillers is not far from hitting the airwaves… and they are not far from coming to the Rat. Wednesday November 22 and $20 entry.

Keep an eye out for highly talented Melbourne outfit Cactus Channel who have recently recorded their third album Stay A While. Thursday December 14 will see them hit our town. The new album is said to be slightly wilder, darker and heavier. Sounds good to me!
