Arts Centre Melbourne will reopen its doors from Saturday June 27, kickstarting things on a freaky note. In 2014, the venue debuted Ghostly Machines, a performance that cryptically manipulated Hamer Hall’s enormous light rigging to create a spectral experience.
Now, Arts Centre Melbourne is bringing this performance back to coincide with the venue’s reopening. The immersive show was created, scripted and programmed solely by Arts Centre Melbourne’s own production and lighting teams and will be the perfect way to kick things back into gear.
Visually, Ghostly Machines mimics some sort of supernatural ‘dance’ from state-of-the-art lighting systems that know how to tango. We so often witness how lights can complement a live show with an artist, band or ensemble in tow, but how often do we get to see lights flutter on their own?
This “mechanical ballet” as it’s been touted will be accompanied by immersive soundscapes and kinetic art in something that’s truly spectacular but certifiably indeterminate.

Ghostly Machines comes to Arts Centre Melbourne’s Hamer Hall from Saturday June 27. The performance is free but you’ll have to make a booking to reserve your place. Tickets have yet to be released but will be available via the venue website shortly.
