After four years, the iconic Uncle Donut has closed its doors on Little Malop Street

But they're opening a new shop and intend to add coffee, pasta and gnocchi to their offerings.

Inspired by the abundance of iced, sugared and gourmet treats taking over Melbourne, Uncle Donut was one of the first to bring glazed, dusted, fried and filled hand-crafted donut varieties to Geelong. Opening on Little Malop Street back in 2017 (on Sunday, February 26, we remember it well), their humble store garnered queues down the street giving away 500 free treats to keen donut lovers of Geelong.

Breathing new life into the laneway location, which was previously a late-night takeaway joint (Eureka fans you’ll know this spot all too well), Uncle Donut was created by Ben O’Halloran and Adrian Augert, the owners of the former Ocean Grove cafe Uncle Jack’s, sparked from people travelling all the way to Melbourne to get one of these delicious desserts. Providing Geelong with daily hand-dipped, indulgent treats, selling out more often than not over the last four years, the venue became renowned for their monthly waves of mouthwatering flavours on offer.

Donut lovers have been blessed with the likes of Nutella, Strawberry Jam, Jaffa, an exotic Dulce de Leche, Rocky Road donut, passionfruit pavlova, Apple Pie Cheesecake to Lemon Meringue and even a Crème Brûlée donut, among many others.

The creations didn’t stop with the monthly menu though, with limited creations for those special occasions and events that they still continue to do to this day. St Patrick’s day has been celebrated with a mint green glaze, white choc pastry cream and Oreo crumbed donut, while the Easter Surprise sported a deep-fried ball of Frangelico custard, milk chocolate, hazelnut praline, topped with a kinder surprise.

The key takeaways

  • Uncle Donut is closing the venue in Little Malop Street
  • A new permanent store is set to open in Westfield’s food court in December
  • The team will be adding coffee, pasta and gnocchi to their offerings

Having treated us on the beloved street for so long, the venue has now permanently shut its doors to the Little Malop Street venue, making way for a bright new venue in Westfield.

“Unfortunately our lease has come to an end (Lt Malop St) so our shop is now closed,” Uncle Donut shared on social media.

“We’d like to thank you all for the amazing 4 years and we will be enjoying a nice little break before our brand new shop is ready in Westfield Geelong food court.”

Plotting their Geelong domination of doughy treats early on, Uncle Donut actually opened a pop-up in Geelong’s CBD earlier this year, giving locals and tourists an easier way to get their hands on the treats that have previously only been available down Little Malop Street and online.

This actually marked the store’s second venture into Westfield, with Uncle Donut running a small pop-up shop in the shopping centre back in the early days.

While the news of the Little Malop Street store closing will leave a hole in our hearts, the venue has also revealed they’ve secured a permanent shop in Westfield’s food court, which they plan to open in mid-December.

Alongside round works of art from their current offering, including the Caramel Oreo Donut, Salty Caramel, gluten-free cinnamon, the aforementioned Crème Brûlée, vanilla slice, Tim Tam explosion, peppermint crisp, strawberry jam and the golden gaynetto, among many others, Uncle Donut also intends to add coffee, pasta and gnocchi to their offerings.

That’s all the information we have on that, but we’re thinking this will be bringing back the delights of Big Mamma Gnocchi, a pop-up venture brought to us by Uncle Donut back in 2019. Operating as an unpretentious takeaway/virtual restaurant, the team were serving handmade gnocchi made daily with honest sauces.

We. Are. Ready.
