Words by Benjamin Lamb

We’re gazing our eye across regional Vic’s many stages to see what’s on the agenda for 2022.

Things are a little bit different in the world of music in Victoria at the moment, it’s hard to know what’s happening and different rules surrounding capacity limits.

But we’ve had a look around the grounds for shows that are most likely still set to happen, we are diving into some of the best theatre shows that are still making their way to a regional Victorian theatre near you.

Mono: A Three-Person One-Man Show

Making its way to the Geelong Arts Centre this February, Mono features three iconic Australian performers; Noeline Brown from shows like Would You Believe?, Max Gillies from The Gillies Report, and everyone’s favourite character actor John Wood who has been seen in shows like Blue Heelers

They each bring their comedic prowess and acting chops in a great show called Mono, a show that brings a number of characters to life thanks to different monologues, there’s been a lot of attention surrounding this show, it’s set to be a great one.

The 13-Storey Treehouse

Based on the Andy Griffiths – authored young adult book series of the same name, this show brings the 13-Storey Treehouse to life.

It’s full of a lot of laughs, a lot of toys, and definitely a lot of goofs. It’s the perfect show to take your kids or younger relatives.

It’s taking place at Warrnambool’s Lighthouse Theatre on March 22, grab your tickets here.

Bill Bailey – En Route To Normal

Yes, Bill Bailey is making his way to regional Victoria in 2022. The British comedic / musical mastermind is bringing his En Route To Normal show to a number of awesome spots across Australia later this year.

He’s no stranger to Aussie shores, having performed here regularly pre-covid, and being an important facet of many Melbourne International Comedy Festivals.

There’ll be no shortage of laugh out loud moments, great music, and lots more at Ballarat’s Her Majesty’s Theatre on November 3 (grab tickets here), Geelong Arts Centre on October 15 (tickets here) and Ulumbarra Theatre in Bendigo on November 4 (tickets here).

Amphibian

Coming to us thanks to Windmill Theatre Company, Amphibian is a cool play that’s definitely worth your time. It’s all about two young people who, after apparently stealing money, are forced to separate and live lives apart.

Many reviews remark that the show is perfect for a younger demographic, many saying it’s required viewing for those 12 and up.

You can catch it February 22, and it’s happening at Bendigo’s The Capital, grab your tickets here.

Les Misérables

It’s one of the world’s most iconic and biggest musicals, and it’s heading to a regional stage this year. The show has won a number of prestigious awards, including Grammys and Tonys.

Due to the show’s difficult nature to perform and extreme staging, it’s not often put on in independent theatres, so this is definitely worth checking out.

It’s making its way to the West Gippsland Arts centre, and the tickets are only priced from $50 which is a bargain for a show of this calibre. You can grab tickets here

Margaret Fulton: The Musical

This one has definitely fallen under the radar, there’s a musical taking place in regional Victoria based on the life and times of Margaret Fulton, one of our most prolific celebrity chefs.

With musicals about figures that you’d never expect like Alexander Hamilton and Shane Warne getting rave reviews and many fans across Australia and the globe, there’s no question that this has the makings of following suit and becoming one of the biggest shows in the musical world.

The show is taking place at The Wedge in Sale, and you can grab your tickets here. You can also see it at Drysdale’s Potato Shed here

Become The One

Become The One has an extremely interesting premise and is bound to garner a lot of attention for its originality.

It’s about a male character who becomes enamoured with an AFL player who is closing out his career. It traverses feelings of masculinity, identity, and sexuality. It recently won the 2018 Playtime Award for New Writing, showing the high-quality nature of this show.

It’s going down at Riverlink Theatres in Shepparton, grab your tickets here. You can also see it in Warrnambool at the Lighthouse Theatre and at the Geelong Arts Centre

The show is called Winding Back, celebrating the 5-decade career the artist has enjoyed.

Tenors At Twilight

It’s not technically a theatre show, but bears mentioning on this list of things heading to Regional Victoria. To add to the fanciness of seeing Tenors, it’ll be taking place at a winery, making Mansfield feel like you’ve travelled to the middle of Italy.

On top of your ticket and you can add in a fancy platter as well these include the Vintners Platter, which is a fancy selection of charcuterie, the Trout Platter, which as the name suggests, features trout, the garden platter for those vegetarian people who attend, or even a beautiful bottle of wine for an extra $40 to really make sure you enjoy the sensational work of the tenors.

Mamma Mia!

Everyone’s favourite Abba celebration is one of the most popular musicals across Australia, you’re always bound to have it at a theatre near you. And this is true for those in Kyneton who can enjoy it thanks for the Kyneton Theatre Company.

If you have never heard of the story is about a young girl and her relationship with her mother, while she’s trying to find her true father. With ABBA’s catalogue perfectly relating to the emotions characters are feeling at some time throughout the show. You’ll get to hear ‘Super Trouper’, ‘The Winner Takes It All’, and many more.
