The Blues Train expands popular Next Generation Concert Series into 2023 live music program

Following the sell-out success of November’s Next Generation Concert Series on Queenscliff’s legendary Blues Train, the 2023 program will continue to blend emerging and established blues and roots artists as an ongoing commitment to the next generation of both audiences and musicians.

Announced earlier this year, Queenscliff’s legendary Blues Train curated a dedicated program of emerging and established Australian contemporary blues and roots musicians for the very first time in the newly announced, The Blues Train Next Generation Concert Series. The series, which arrives in November for a sold-out run, will showcase established artists who have contributed to the sustained success of the world-class cultural tourism drawcard, that is The Blues Train, with emerging artists performing their interpretation of roots music suited to the next generation of audiences.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

With shows selling out in record time, it was clear the region has a desire to see both established and emerging artists alike on board, gifting punters and musicians an invaluable experience.

“I was amazed at how quickly the Next Generation Concert Series sold out, proof of the appetite there is for Blues Train regulars and contemporary blues and roots lovers in general to hear emerging artists in the scene perform,” says The Blues Train founder and curator Hugo T Armstrong.

“Our programming will continue to showcase the established artists who have contributed to the sustained success of the world-class cultural tourism drawcard, that is The Blues Train over 29 years. Providing emerging artists with the opportunity to perform on the bill with some of Australia’s leading exponents of the genre often leads to collaborations and mentorships which otherwise would not happen. We are very excited to see where that leads artistically for them all.

“Finding the right balance of high-profile artists, while still providing the opportunity for emerging artists to gain employment and profile, combined with valuable gig experience is a real challenge – and I am so pleased to know that we have hit the mark.”

Next Generation Concert Series artists back in 2023 include 2020 International Blues Challenge Finalist Aaron Pollock, Ocean Grove’s family of musicians The Von Robertsons, blues roots and southern soul duo Midnight Jackson, blues singer/songwriter and guitarist Jonno Zilber, blues guitarist and singer Jarrod Shaw, Willie J & the Bad Books, and son of the legendary Phil Para, Denzil – performing with his Dad in the ultimate emerging and established artist combination.

New to the Blues Train line-up in 2023 is young blues guitarist Kathleen Halloran guesting with Blues guitar legend Jimi Hocking on 14 January. Kathleen has gained a huge reputation for her talent performing with Kate Ceberano. Other new talent includes Texas born/former New York local Bret Mosley and hailing from Denver Colorado 23-year-old Roots singer, songwriter and guitarist Oscar Ladell.

Established artists back on the tracks for 2023 include Jimi Hocking, George Kamikawa, The McNaMarr Project, Damon Smith, Anna Scionti, Phil Para and Brian Fraser.

True to the original Blues Train formula the 2023 program showcases four blues and roots artists per show – a solo artist, a duo, a trio, and a full band. As patrons swap carriages throughout the evening, they see four completely different interpretations and styles of roots music, a committed gender blend of artists, and all the sub genres within blues and roots music on board a heritage steam train.

The Whitlams’ Tim Freedman is performing intimate shows in Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo this November

Tim Freedman, the lead singer and songwriter of beloved ARIA Award-winning band The Whitlams, is stripping back his popular indie rock repertoire for a run of intimate shows at Piano Bar venues in Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo.

The Australian music industry legend and piano-adept will join forces with acclaimed pedal steel and guitar player Ollie Thorpe, who has been touring with Freedman in the Whitlams’ alt-country offshoot, The Whitlams Black Stump Band, and deliver intimate classics like “No Aphrodisiac” at Piano Bar in Ballarat on Tuesday, November 15, at Piano Bar in Bendigo on Wednesday, November 16 and at Piano Bar in Geelong on Thursday, November 17.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

The Whitlam’s catalogue is embedded into Australian music history. Across three intimate shows, Freedman and Thorpe, perform their emotive new single ‘The Day John Sattler Broke His Jaw”‘ and a new poignant version of his 1999 hit “Blow Up the Pokies” commissioned by Wesley Mission, along with other Whitlams favourites, providing a rare opportunity to reacquaint yourself with this powerhouse of Australian music.

Steve Moffatt at The Daily Telegraph wrote of a recent solo show at Sydney’s City Recital Hall, “The tall and gangly frontman charmed and cajoled his 600-strong audience with all the debonair flair of a Bryan Ferry… The stripped-back accompaniment of the piano highlighted just how cleverly constructed his lyrics are – they sound so uncontrived, which is hellish difficult to do as any would-be songwriter will tell you.”

After three sold-out shows earlier in the year, Tim returns to the Piano Bar stage for a wonderful tour that is sure to sell out.

Doors open at 6pm and shows from 8pm. Food and drinks are available at bar prices. All tables must arrive by 7:30pm.

Tom Gleeson is bringing his Hard Quiz Live show to Geelong, Bendigo and Warrnambool

‘Hard Quiz’ Master, Overlord and Gold Logie Award-winner Tom Gleeson is adding a third dimension to Australia’s hardest TV quiz, swapping the studio for a theatre and hitting the road.

Starting in Cairns in February, this tour will go to Warrnambool, Adelaide, Wollongong, Geelong, Noosa, Gold Coast, Caloundra, Mildura, Dubbo, Bendigo, Wyong, Sutherland and Frankston across the year.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around the region here.

Broadcast on ABC and now in its seventh season, Hard Quiz is a well-known Australian television comedy quiz show. Hosted by Tom Gleeson, the show is a spin-off of his “Hard Chat” segment on the satirical television news program The Weekly with Charlie Pickering. It’s the game show where the host doesn’t hide his contempt, and the prize is the chance to stare down a camera while holding a mug.

But this live show will be ‘Hard Quiz’ like you’ve never seen it. Audience members will be pulled on stage for a live roasting from Tom, the most brutal quizmaster since the inquisition. When he’s not flaying contestants for the enjoyment of audience members, he’s a successful stand-up comedian who knows how to command a theatre.

Gleeson has just recently taken the show across Australia and now it’s regional Vic’s turn. Jackie and Paul won in Darwin, Greg and Natai were winners in Sydney and Blair, Sid and Pauline were just a few who raised the big brass mug on stage in Melbourne… AND NOW IT’S YOUR CHANCE as Hard Quiz Live Gets Regional in 2023!

“After SOLD OUT shows in every Australian capital city, HARD QUIZ LIVE is hitting the road. I’ve heard your desperate cries of, “Why aren’t you doing a show in my town?”, Tom says.

“So, I’m doing my best to get to your sh*thole. The city shows were loose, so these shows will be feral!”

Be a part of Hard Quiz Live, an experience like no other!

Hard Quiz Live arrives at Lighthouse Theatre in Warrnambool on February 10, Costa Hall in Geelong on March 17 and Ulumbarra Theatre in Bendigo on May 13 2023. You can purchase tickets here on Friday, October 21.

‘BROKEN’: Victorian newcomers Ivy Black reclaim the pop-punk music scene with debut EP

Considering their short tenure as a group, Ivy Black have quickly been making a name for themselves – and with a sound rooted in the modern resurgence of pop-punk and an energetic presence that’ll resonate in a live setting, it’s easy to see why.

Varying between vibrant pop-punk numbers and emotionally charged emo power ballads, their debut EP, BROKEN, acts as the perfect introduction to why the Swan Hill-based newcomers are a local act to keep an eye on.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

With a sound reminiscent of Yours Truly and Stand Atlantic, ‘Lonely’ feels destined to become an anthem for the crowds at UNIFY Gathering. With the opener impressively contrasting drawn-out intervals with rapidly spouted vocals and shoegaze-inspired metal riffs, it’s a blistering introduction that adopts the aggression of The Donnas with the playful wit of Olivia Rodrigo.

In one of the EP’s most telling moments, ‘misery’, vocalist Shannon Bishop introspectively unpacks her own issues with mental health in a stripped-back ballad that’s reminiscent of Tonight Alive’s ‘Amelia’. ‘TROUBLE’, on the other hand, is ruled by groove-laden basslines and powerful crescendos.

Upon listening to BROKEN, it’s pretty evident why Ivy Black are in line for a rapid rise to success, with the Swan Hill locals proving that from the get-go, they have something refreshing to offer the Australian pop-punk community.

Kingswood announce new album ‘Home’ and huge 60-date Australian tour

ARIA and APRA nominated iconic Melbourne band Kingswood have today unveiled details about their forthcoming studio album ‘Home’ featuring the new single ‘Burning Holes’ and a huge Australian tour, taking to 60 locations around Australia in 2022 and 2023.

The band, who are currently on a 30+ date tour throughout the USA and Europe, will be bringing their unique rock and roll live experience to live music venues right across the country. The tour will kick off the tour on Saturday, November 12 at Stone & Dust Festival in Mt Gambier, then take to almost 60 locations in NSW, QLD, VIC, ACT, SA and WA, with the final date being Sunday, June 11 at Victor Harbour in South Australia. The tour will see the band undertake their biggest tour to date, specially modifying a coach to sustain the overwhelmingly extensive undertaking.

Locally, Kingswood will perform at the Barwon Club in Geelong on February 18, Sooki Lounge in Belgrave on February 19, Volta in Ballarat on February 24, Croxton Bandroom in Melbourne on February 25 and Haba in Rye on February 26.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

The tour comes in support of the band’s forthcoming studio album Home, set for release in February 2023, which the band provided a taster for in new single ‘Burning Holes’.

Proving to be the best writing to come from the Kingswood camp in recent times, heralding a significant return to form for the critically acclaimed four-piece, ‘Burning Holes’ sees Kingswood sound more sonically and emotionally aligned than ever due to the competence of rich acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies between Alexander Laska and Fergus Linacre. The band recorded the song at Newmarket Studios in Melbourne, and it was mixed and mastered in Nashville by revered American engineer Eddie Spear (Zach Bryan, Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlisle).

“‘Burning Holes’ signifies themes of solace, resolve and independence. Whilst initial inclinations might appear as longingly and melancholy, a subversive celebration of acceptance and contentment begins to resound, tied into the optimistic sounds of the harmonic consideration and emotional tones. The experience echoes the writing of classic country tropes where sorrow and hope clash in a beautiful duet,” the band share.

“To be frank, the creation of the song was incredibly straightforward – set up, play and sing. All live, all in one performance, dedicated and honest. We just kept tracking until one of the performances felt reflective of everything we set out to achieve emotionally and what you’re hearing is it.”

Kingswood have long been regarded as one of Australia’s premier rock groups, establishing a career and legacy for themselves as an electrifying and dynamic touring band for well over a decade.

Their return in 2020 with the critically acclaimed third studio album Juveniles signaled a new era for the Melbourne favourites, characteristically redefining their musicality and exploring new sonic territory. Demonstrating their evolution as songwriters and musicians with more stories to tell, single ‘Bittersweet’ ranked as Triple M’s #1 Most Played Song in the country as well as ranking 45th on national radio, and #75 on the Shazam Top 200 in Australia.

Never a band to call a capital city run a ‘National Tour’, and not afraid to get their boots a little dusty, the boys you know and love are ready to make up for lost time with their record breaking ‘HOMETOWNS’ tour of 2023.

“This is phase one of the tour, there is a lot more to be announced next year. It will make it the greatest tour ever undertaken in Australia.”

In the sixteen years since his debut album, Jack Ladder’s varied musical journey has been notable for some sharp stylistic turns but has always been connected by a singular song writing talent.

Becoming the city’s most wholesome purveyors of damn fine cups of coffee, permaculture and sustainability are a staple at the cafe. The coffee cups and lids are fully compostable and are processed on the property along with coffee grounds and other appropriate compostables. Water is redirected from the neighbouring business’s ice machine run off to passively water the edible garden.

Worth visiting for the experience alone, Sweet Adeline’s food and beverages only add to the appeal, being both delicious and affordable. Indulge in 100% organic blend coffee, premium hot chocolate and Chai, or cool down with smoothies, milkshakes and fresh pressed juice.

A hidden gem, the serene Sweet Adeline is found just a stroll across the river from Highton and Belmont. You won’t regret spending a moment here by the beautiful Barwon river for the best coffee in Geelong (and quite possibly, the world).
