It only seems like yesterday that Joshua Hedley, in Australia playing fiddle for Justin Townes Earle, was dragged to the mic on the main stage at the first ever Out On The Weekend Festival in Melbourne. Everyone involved in Justin’s band had told promoter BT of Love Police what an incredible singer Joshua was, and BT wanted to hear it for himself.

The next year, 2016, Joshua was back in Australia on his first solo tour anywhere ever. A deal with Jack White’s Third Man Records was just around the corner, followed by his brilliant debut, Mr Jukebox.

Joshua Hedley’s touring partner Emily Nenni also knows Robert’s Western World well, having spent years sharpening her chops there and at the smoky double wide trailer Santa’s Pub. And like Joshua, Emily has a unique approach.

“What I love about country is the songs can be very honest and vulnerable, yet they’re beautiful enough to make you cry,” Nenni notes. “My music is sweet and sad, but I don’t take myself too seriously. It’s old school honky-tonk with a slightly different flavour.”

Soccer Mommy returns to Australia in February 2023

After first touring Australia in 2019 with headline shows and travelling the country as part of the Falls Festival lineup, Soccer Mommy – one of the most gifted songwriters making rock music right now – has announced a return to Australia.

Having toured alongside the likes of Paramore, Vampire Weekend, Kacey Musgraves, Phoebe Bridgers and more, Sophie Allison (a.k.a. Soccer Mommy) will perform for fans in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide in February 2023. While in the country, Sophie will also perform for West Coast fans as part of the recently announced Perth Festival line-up.

“So excited to be returning to Australia! It’s been a while, but we’ve got lots of new songs to play for you guys. See u soon!” says Soccer Mommy

In the four years since Soccer Mommy last toured Australia, she continued to create emotionally generous music, culminating in her most sophisticated songwriting to date on two new studio albums: color theory (2020) and Sometimes, Forever (2022). She also last week debuted a special Halloween take on her song ‘Darkness Forever (Sophie’s Version)’.

Released in June 2022, Sometimes, Forever – produced by Daniel Lopatin/Oneohtrix Point Never [The Weeknd, FKA Twigs, Charli XCX] – topped the US Heatseekers Albums Chart and peaked at #7 on the Australia Hitseekers Albums Chart (ARIA). Packed with clever nods to synth-filled subgenres like new wave and goth, the ultra-catchy love song ‘Shotgun’ rubs up against much gloomier fare, like the Sylvia Plath-referencing ‘Darkness Forever’. The weightless ‘newdemo’ spins delicately layered harmonies and mystical synths into an end-of-the-world reverie; the impending apocalypse has never sounded so jaw-droppingly beautiful.

The album color theory also took out the #1 spot on the US Heatseekers Albums Chart, featuring acclaimed singles ‘bloodstream’, ‘circle the drain’ and ‘yellow is the color of her eyes’. The LP served as a bigger-sounding follow up to her 2018 breakthrough record Clean, continuing to win her fans far outside of the lo-fi bedroom pop scene she cut her teeth playing in.

Loch Hart Music Festival: The BYO camping festival is back on the Great Ocean Road this 18-20 November

Created as an opportunity to showcase local up-and-coming Australian talent and the very aesthetically pleasing Great Ocean Road (and all its treasures), launching with just 500 guests back in 2018, Loch Hart Music Festival has quickly become one of Victoria’s best boutique festivals over the last couple of years. Creating a festival with all the elements that punters desire and a unique ability to build a community over three days, the festival has continuously managed to find the perfect blend of acts to please a large crowd while maintaining an intimate, grassroots feel.

Having delivered a magical first edition in two years back in January with 1500 of the best people in the world, the beloved festival is grasping 2022 with two hands and hosting its fourth iteration (and second festival of the year) with three utterly magical days of music, arts, comedy and more this November.

The best bits

  • Regional Victoria’s favourite boutique camping festival Loch Hart Music Festival returns this November.
  • Harvey Sutherland, Peter Bibby, Kylie Auldist, Gordon Koang and Party Dozen lead the lineup
  • The grassroots BYO event will also feature comedy, glamping, morning yoga sessions, giant games and an outdoor cinema
  • Tickets are on sale now here.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Taking place from Friday, November 18 to Sunday, November 20, the grassroots BYO event will be bringing more than 20 world-class acts over one November weekend to one stage in a natural amphitheatre at Kangaroobie Camp, situated a stone’s throw from The Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge along Victoria’s iconic Great Ocean Road.

Heading up the music lineup for the November edition is producer, bandleader and synthesist Harvey Sutherland who will turn the farm into a pulsating dancefloor, noted Australian treasure Peter Bibby, Australia’s queen of soul Kylie Auldist, South Sudanese legend Gordon Koang and Party Dozen, a sonic partnering of saxophonist Kirsty Tickle and percussionist Jonathan Boulet.

The rest of the lineup is just as impressive, featuring a diverse crop of artists including the local supergroup Galah; Jarrah Ma – the solo project of Sandy Dish’s guitarist; Lightbulb (aka Mikey Cahill); DJ extraordinaire La Porgretta; Melbourne’s ageless boy wonder Milo Eastwood; Fashion icons meet pop sensations WIIGZ; half country, half folk, full-time storyteller Watty Thompson with a 10-piece band; neo-soul, alternative-pop and jazz-rock music project Velvet Bloom; Melbourne-based disco jazz collective Squid Nebula; singer-songwriter Harmony Byrne; and DJ and live choir Sunshine & Disco Faith Choir.

There’s also the enchanting Roy Blues; Melbourne folk musician Leah Senior; UFO of the Australian scene Alien Nosejob; two-piece electronic act Digital Afrika; Melbourne electric collective Empress; garage punk rock duo Good Sniff; Melbourne locals Hobsons Bay Coast Guard; and Nurse Punk Band Wurst Nurse.

Alongside the music, Loch Hart also promises three days of region-first focused entertainment this November, with the likes of Aaron Gocs, Blake Freeman, Emma Holland, Sonia Di Iorio and Tim Hewitt leading the comedy lineup. Plus morning yoga sessions, giant games and an outdoor cinema to keep everyone entertained while local food trucks, market stalls and an on-site bar will be there so punters can pick up some gourmet eats or buy some fresh festival attire between trips to the bar and festival stage.

In an exciting addition to the festival, following the success of the January festival, Loch Hart is also now a family friendly event, giving the future generations something to reminisce about for years to come! Children aged 12 and under are free while children aged 13-17 must have their own ticket. All children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and have a signed Guardian Consent Form to experience the sheer bliss, joy and wonder of this intimate gathering.

Championing an escape to one of the most beautiful and diverse areas in the country, the festival offers free camping as part of its ticket pricing, with punters setting up tents, swags or caravans on a spectacular hilltop camping area boasting 180 degrees oceans views. For those camping with children, there’s a family camping area to set yourself up in for the weekend. If glamping is more your vibe, Loch Hart has you covered with premium bell tent options, starting at just over $50 per person a night, which is an absolute steal if you’re a festival newbie or you don’t own your own camping equipment. A little luxury never hurts when it comes to a multi-day music fest either though.

As if we needed more reason to adore this local festival, sustainability is also at its core. Building on from previous years, all the food and drink offerings will be served in reusable cups, plates and bowls with the utensils to match. Replacing single-use plastic, while the BYO policy (no glass) means people could pull up an esky and enjoy incredible homegrown Australian acts without queuing hours for overpriced drinks and food. The BYO policy also extends to couches along with your beers so you can lounge around the amphitheatre in the sunny afternoons. Just remember to take it home with you when you leave.

Loch Hart Music Festival 2022: Creating magic to be bottled and taken back out into the world

With three days of body-moving music, in addition to comedy, free camping, BYO, food trucks, ocean views, yoga, cinema, arts, giant games and more in the laid-back surrounds of Loch Hart Music Festival 2022, you’d be mad to miss it.

Geelong’s iconic Floating Christmas Tree has officially arrived in the bay

The iconic Geelong floating Christmas tree is officially back on show at the Geelong Waterfront for the start of a new festive season.

The world-class silver structure has carefully been towed into place this week, marking its ninth year in the bay. The tree will be lit up on Saturday, November 12 with a huge opening program to mark the beginning of the city’s annual Christmas celebrations, complete with a stage show, roving performers, live entertainment and more.

Courtesy of Darryn Lyons, the infamous 25-metre structure debuted back in 2014 and has since given locals a spot to spend their nights leading up to Christmas, watching the light show synchronised to music and delighting people of all ages. Not only bringing our community together and spreading that festive spirit, but the structure has attracted an attendance of around in excess of 1.6 million people prior to 2020, with that number only increasing since.

Tipped to be the ‘best and biggest Christmas in Geelong program to date’, the Floating Christmas tree opening celebrations will go ahead on a Saturday night for the first time, in a bid to allow more families and visitors from outside the region to enjoy the festivities and boost Geelong’s economy.

Renowned performers, Taylor Henderson and Denis Walter will headline the launch of our Christmas in Geelong program, which also features Angie Hilton and dancers will bring the Christmas groove, Kate Daley and Steve Hobbs will serenade you with some all-time favourite Christmas tunes and Geelong’s own ‘piano man’, Andy Pobjoy will accompany Shandelle Cooke to get you into the festive spirit.

Roving entertainment kicks off at Steampacket Quay at 5.30pm ahead of a two-hour stage show commencing at 7pm with a Wadawurrung Welcome to Country and performance opening the show.

At 9pm, one of Geelong’s lucky young residents will line-up alongside Santa to flick the switch that will turn on the famous Floating Christmas Tree and trigger a pyrotechnic display too.

The celebrations will continue up at City Hall from 9:30pm with the annual Christmas Projections also being turned on for the first time.

The popular community event is back for the first time since 2018, after the celebrations were rained out in 2019 and cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The iconic floating Christmas tree is just one piece of this year’s expanded program of free Christmas events and activities across the region. The anticipated Christmas program will also include School Christmas Trees, Festive street entertainment, Santa’s Letterbox, a Giant Christmas Selfie Trail, Santa pet photos, Christmas masterclasses and more.

Two stunning Aussie vineyards make the 2022 World’s Best Vineyards list

Celebrating the very best and most beautiful vineyards across the globe, the World’s Best Vineyards has revealed this year’s top wine destinations for 2022 at an event held in Argentina’s wine capital, Mendoza.

The annual list which highlights the world’s finest and most diverse vineyards across the globe announced the Top 50 with the innovative Antinori nel Chianti Classico in Tuscany, Italy, topping the list for the first time. Italy also celebrated the highest climber accolade with sparkling wine producer Ferrari Trento moving 50 places up the list to 11.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

Spain’s Bodegas de los Herederos del Marqués de Riscal with its longstanding history and breath-taking architecture took second place for two years in a row, whilst Chilean vineyards, Montes and VIK Winery, achieved third and fourth place.

In some brilliant news for wine lovers Down Under, two Australian vineyards have also earned themselves a place on the prestigious list.

Coming in at number 36 and also representing the overall continent winner for Australasia was Henschke with the stunning winery in the Eden Valley.

Recognised for its rich heritage, innovative spirit and commitment to handcrafting exceptional wines for many years, Henschke is a family-owned, 154-year-old Australian winery, located in Keyneton, South Australia in the Eden Valley wine region. It produces the ‘Hill of Grace’, one of Australia’s “cult wines”, and was considered Australia’s second best wine by James Halliday in 2009.

If you’re interested in visiting one of the world’s best, Henschke Cellar Door, housed in the farm’s 1950s Woolstore, featuring one of the remaining dry-stone walls of the original 1860s Grain Barn, opened in late 2018 to mark the winery’s 150th anniversary. The cellar door includes a spacious tasting area, courtyard, underground wine tanks, private tasting room and the Henschke Wine Room, which displays the full Henschke collection.

Just sliding in at number 49, Penfolds Magill Estate was the second Aussie vineyard to be named on the list.

Nestled in the foothills of Adelaide and only 15 minutes from the CBD, Penfolds Magill Estate is the original home of Penfolds wines and of Australia’s most prized wine, the famous Grange.

Penfolds has attracted a strong international following, and regularly wins gold medals and gold class awards at Australian wine shows and world wine awards. As well as the accolades for Penfolds Grange, the Penfolds Chardonnay portfolio has enjoyed remarkable wine show success.

Penfolds’ Barossa Valley Winery and Cellar Door is the main site of Penfolds wine making. As testament to that focus, the winery facilities include the largest premium red wine barrel hall in the Southern Hemisphere. Visit the winery in the heart of the valley to sample a selection of Penfolds wines, including a rare taste of Grange.

Montes also took continent winner for South America, with Robert Mondavi Winery which is described as the ‘soul of Napa Valley’ topping North America. The best in Africa was revealed as Creation in South Africa, whilst France and Portugal had the highest overall split of vineyards with each taking 11 spots on this year’s Top 100 list.

The 2022 list includes more countries than ever before with 20 from all six continents being featured. It also includes exciting first-time entrants from India, Bulgaria and Greece highlighting the recent growth in the industry. There were more English entries than ever before with Balfour Winery (78), Gusbourne (85) and Nyetimber (93) joining Ridgeview at number 73.

This year’s host, Zuccardi Valle de Uco has been promoted to the World’s Best Vineyard’s Hall of Fame after coming top of the list three years in a row. Going forward the new category will be formed of vineyards that top the annual vote of the World’s 50 Best Vineyards and are therefore no longer eligible to be voted for on new editions of the list.

Andrew Reed, Managing Director Wine and Exhibitions at William Reed, commented that, “The World’s Best Vineyards highlights wine tourism destinations around the globe and now that travel is back on the cards, this year’s list is more important than ever for raising profiles with tourists and those looking for authentic and unique trips. We are so pleased to have been able to travel to Mendoza for this year’s event. It is a place of extraordinary beauty and of course, lots of amazing vineyards – the perfect wine tourism destination. Gracias!”

Well, we now know which vineyards are on our bucket list.

All the best things happening at the Geelong Arts Centre in November and beyond

It’s almost the end of the year, but that doesn’t mean our local arts scene is slowing down. If anything, we’re heading into the biggest run of theatre, musicals and concerts yet.

With a plethora of entertainment once again adorning our favourite regional theatre, this is your cue to get ready for a huge final run of entertainment in Geelong.

Here are the shows not to miss at the Geelong Arts Centre this month.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around the region here

Our top pick for November: The Rivoli

When: Wed, November 9 at 7:30pm, Thursday, November 10 at 7:30pm, Friday, November 11 at 7:30pm, Saturday, November 12 1pm and 7:30pm

Where: Geelong West Town Hall

Let nostalgia take the wheel when Dance Makers Collective’s The Rivoli hits Geelong West Town Hall this November to round out Geelong Arts Centre’s incredible ‘Our Season 2022’.

Arriving from November 9 to 12 2022 for five special shows, The Rivoli pays tribute to iconic Australian dance halls of 1930 – 1960, when to meet was to talk, laugh and move to music together.

In Dance Makers Collective’s most ambitious work yet, The Rivoli story centres around The Rivoli Dance Palace in Parramatta, which was long Western Sydney’s favourite dance hall. The action at the Rivoli Ballroom was broadcast on radio stations across Australia’s eastern seaboard for over a decade during the 50s and 60s. It was a place where entire families could gather to share in dancing and music. Demolished in 1973 to make way for office development, now nothing remains of ‘The Riv’ except the stories of the people who danced there.

Development of The Rivoli performance began by imagining what such a venue would look like if it existed today. What kinds of communities would come together to reaffirm their shared identity through bodies and rhythm and music?

The result is a poignant ode to a bygone dance era, where throughout the performance audiences will hear the voices of people who danced at the Rivoli, as well as the voices of those who dance now, in Geelong.

Featuring some of Australia’s best dancers and a stellar live band, The Rivoli encourages audience members to be swept into an immersive exploration of mid-century nightlife, desire and social connection.

Risky Business: A Little Show and A Big Conversation

When:  Friday, November 11 at 6pm.

Where: Studio 4

The world is at a tipping point. Suddenly we are seeing an explosion of interest in artists who once would have been considered ‘less than’. Diversity of all kinds has become a valuable asset in the performing arts. Is difference the new black? Why do audiences find themselves fascinated by it? Do they see themselves represented within diversity?

Risky Business: A little show and a big conversation explores these questions and more.

Think performance meets panel discussion: three sets of provocations discussed by a panel of experienced disabled artists, including Andy Jackson, Zoe Boesen, Kate Hood, and Eliza Hull, who put theory into action throughout, as they share both thoughts and performances addressing the big questions that society is often afraid to ask:

• Why is language so important?
• Why do people avert their gaze?
• What remains unspoken, and why?
• How can we use disability to add value to the work we do in the mainstream?
• Will using disabled artists drop the standard?

An important conversation to continue having, Risky Business puts the voices and experiences of deaf and disabled artists at the heart of the conversation, right where they should be.

Through Risky Business, Raspberry Ripple and Geelong Arts Centre’s Creative Engine are delighted to introduce some truly outstanding disabled performers to Geelong audiences, presenting outstanding performances and a much-needed point of view.

Together, the artists involved in Risky Business are delighted to take to the stage to give voice to new thinking around performance and disability, and to celebrate true diversity in Australia.

Where: Costa Hall

Forty years on, and with their messages of positive engagement in Indigenous rights and environmental protection more relevant than ever, Australian icons Goanna return to celebrate their multi-platinum, game-changing debut album ‘Spirit of Place’.

In the early ‘80s, in the midst of Aussie Rock’s golden age, Goanna helped forge a new Australian identity. Before Midnight Oil and Paul Kelly addressed similar issues, the iconic ‘Solid Rock’ stoked a fire for Indigenous rights that hasn’t gone out, while the anthem of ‘Let The Franklin Flow’ was a call to arms for the emerging environmental movement.

Soulful, lyrical, brimming with musicality and creative volatility, Goanna mixed classic folk song craft with spirited roots rock, helping to establish a musical thread that remains vital and ubiquitous in Australian music today.

In 2022, Shane Howard, Rose Bygrave, Marcia Howard and Graham Davidge, with special guests, embark on a new journey. Reigniting the Goanna spirit once more and paying homage to their classic songs.

With Special Guests Luke Biscan and Mick Ryan.

Stars and Stripes: Gershwin and Copland – Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Season 2022

When:  Friday, November 25 at 7:30pm.

Where: Costa Hall

Young New Zealand conductor Gemma New makes her MSO debut with a stunning collection of American greats celebrating jazz, blues and the American century.

It was one day after the raging success of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue that he was approached to write a “real piano concerto”, something closer to the traditional classical model. Rather than turn his back on the then-current musical forms, Gershwin decided to incorporate them. The result was Concerto in F, a work that ranges effortlessly over different musical structures, to create something truly wonderful and unique. There are suggestions of the Charleston, ragtime, jazz and blues throughout the work, and flexibility in the way these elements emerge from one another – a masterful, consummate fusion.

Accompanying this work is Copland’s Symphony No.3, another pillar of 20th century American composition. A grand and stirring work, composed between 1944 and 1946, it suggests the mammoth achievements of the United States at the close of WWII without a hint of triumphalism.

Gemma New also brings with her a work by fellow New Zealander Salina Fisher, Rainphase. Inspired by the rain falling on the city of Wellington, it is sonically adventurous and beautifully evocative.

Marina Prior & David Hobson ‘The 2 of Us’ Encore

A post shared by MAT McHUGH (@matmchugh)

With combined sales of over 500,000 albums and 100,000,000 streams, all released independently, the music of both Mat McHugh and his moniker, The Beautiful Girls have become firmly cemented in the Australian subconscious.

Raised in Sydney, by the beach, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist McHugh began his career by playing generator powered guerilla shows at his local skate park, where his mix of bass heavy rhythms, dub, folk, soul, jazz and hip hop started to get people’s attention. Word of mouth ensured, and led to one of Australia’s best independent success stories.

Discussing the new tour, and McHugh’s first tour in three years and his first-ever as Mat McHugh & The Beautiful Girls, he admits, “That’s the agenda, just to try and let music help me make sense of it all again, like it always seems to do.”

Like the rest of us, McHugh’s life was thrown into limbo by the pandemic, with tours cancelled left right and centre and lockdown forcing us all to isolate from each other. Not having the opportunity to perform is tough enough for any musician, but when you’re the kind of creative artist whose career is built around the idea of sharing the music you create, that forced isolation can be doubly difficult. It can make you lose your focus.

McHugh has always been prolific. “The creative side of it never ends,” he admits. “It’s just constant little squiggles of expression – you’re just doing stuff all the time.” When there’s an album to work towards or a tour to organise, there’s always something to aim for, a focus. “I always write to a deadline or a timeframe or a purpose and that gives a kind of structure to it or a frame around it – that’s just how my mind works.”

So the pandemic threw a spanner in the works in a way he couldn’t have anticipated. Luckily, one thing that did come into focus was something that had become an unnecessary problem – how to overcome the issue of having two different catalogues, as The Beautiful Girls and as Mat McHugh?

“I kind of kept them separate for a long time live for various reasons,” he explains. “I saw them as two separate bodies of work, but at the core of it of course they’re basically the same thing. I mean, I make these records at home and play most if not all of the instruments on them, and so, after this past three years, I thought, ‘You know what? Part of this whole deal of recalibrating and getting back out on the road and seeing people and sharing music was just kind of stepping forward and joining the two bodies of work for the first time.’

“It’s a good healthy step forward and it allows me the luxury of just picking and choosing the best of all of it. I’m very, very proud of the music I released as The Beautiful Girls and I don’t want to stop playing it because I love it. It means a lot to me. This is a way of tying all those songs that people know, and people love, together so I get to release music in a way that feels honest and has integrity.”

Of course, now there’s a focus for the new songs he’s been writing, which naturally need a bit of road-testing to get them calibrated properly, so when McHugh heads out on the road with his band – bass player and producer Ian Pritchett, keyboardist Shannon Stitt and drummer Carlos Adura – the only problem he’s got is deciding what Mat McHugh & The Beautiful Girls will play. After all, he’s got to pick the songs the fans want to hear and the songs he wants most to share from six Beautiful Girls and three Mat McHugh albums, let alone the EPs and singles, including his most recent, Lagoon, released in October 2020.

“Just doing The Beautiful Girls Seaside Highlife: Greatest Hits, Volume 1 was really hard,” he chuckles. “That was a double-album, which is probably longer than a gig! Then there are the solo records and then the new songs!” It’s a pretty nice problem to have.”

For McHugh, the point of it all is clear. “I want to be on the side that art always does the best, to elevate the vibe, the positivity and bring a bit of relief from the doom and gloom. That’s really my only agenda – share love. That’s it. I just want people to have a good time; I want them to be together.”

And you couldn’t ask for a better reason to hit the road again after three years of uncertainty.

Reflecting on all my recent travels in Australia and Asia. All the wonderful connections travelling and playing music allows me to make, and how I get to spend beautiful moments with so many different people in the world. “AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND!!!!! I am soooo excited to finally meet you guys and bring in a new year with new friends,” she says.

“I’ve been counting down the days until we get to hang…. LET’S DANCE AND HAVE THE BEST TIME EVER!”

With a reputation as a fierce live performer, Wolf has sold out rooms around the world and garnered praise from fans and critics alike. Her recent performance of ‘Liz’ on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon shows off Wolf’s vocal prowess in full force.

Audiences ‘immediate response’ to her talent instilled in Wolf a sense of confidence that carried her through music school and into a post-grad stint gracing local Los Angeles venues. “Before I really fell in love with writing, I loved performing,” says Remi. “That’s always been my home base, it lights something up in my soul that is never lit up at any other time in my life. It’s a very powerful thing — the most expressive I feel like I will ever get.”

Making waves with her 2019 track ‘Guy’, Wolf garnered attention from indie-pop darling Still Woozy and scored a spot opening on their tour. Three critically acclaimed EP’s followed – You’re A Dog, I’m Allergic To Dogs and We Love Dogs! — mostly created in makeshift studios with her co-producer Jared Soloman and limited gear. Apple would later recruit Wolf to soundtrack an iPhone commercial, and she’d receive major co-signs from the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, SZA, John Mayer, Dominic Fike and more.

With her debut album Juno (2021), Wolf dabbles in funk, pop, indie, punk, dance and everything in between. NME applauded the offering as “funk pop at its brightest and boldest” and Pitchfork describing it as “an effervescent, hook-filled record that flirts with weighty emotions… every ounce of sunshine is tempered by grit”.

The project marked the first time Wolf has had the resources to outsource the more technical elements of the production process, as well as access to high quality equipment; an adjustment for a self-proclaimed DIY artist.

Her euphoric live set is an experience to behold, the 26-year-old talking candidly about mental health, sobriety, social anxiety and more, but turning it into a celebration and exuding absolute star power.

Tickets go on sale Friday 4 November (12 noon local time).

The award-winning Australian artist is fresh off the back of a global world tour including shows supporting Mitski, festival performances at Primavera, Splendour In The Grass and sold-out shows across the UK, Europe & North America. She eagerly returns home to perform her new album for Australian fans in 2023.

Following a slew of singles (‘Proof’ with Methyl Ethel, ‘Lungs’ & ‘Flood’), Donnelly released her highly anticipated and critically acclaimed sophomore record Flood in August 2022. Flood is Donnelly’s record of this rediscovery: the product of months of risky experimentation, hard moments of introspection, and a lot of moving around. Flood affirms Donnelly as one of Australia’s most outstanding young songwriters.

The album was written in a multitude of unique locations around Australia, from her home in Fremantle to the rainforests of Bellingen, Williams, Guilderton, Margaret River and Melbourne. With new locations came new approaches; Donnelly strayed from writing on an electric guitar, as she had in the past, and instead moved to the piano, imbuing her new work with fluidity, introspection and vulnerability that underpins the album.

With her dry wit, disarming vocals and endearing charm, Donnelly’s live show is the kind of performance you’ll never forget. Joining her on tour is up-and-coming Perth artist Mia June who makes dreamlike, punchy indie-rock drawing inspiration from the likes of Mitski and Julia Jacklin.

Tickets on sale Friday, November 4.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Proudly supported by Visit Victoria and City of Greater Bendigo, the festival is a predominantly free, grass-roots, community event that gives music fans and community members the opportunity to enjoy world-class music, with a focus on local and independent talent from the blues and roots genres, spanning free performances, ticketed events, jam sessions and workshops throughout Bendigo and surrounding towns.

There are lots of great events happening across the weekend, but here are a few special ones that you might like to get to if you’re in Bendigo for the festival’s last hurrah.

Tex Perkins & Matt Walker + Kings of The Blues

Sunday, November 6, 3pm

If you’re looking for an all-encompassing blues experience, look no further than Tex Perkins and Matt Walker, with the Kings of The Blues trio.

Tex Perkins has played a key role in Australian music and it’s understandably difficult to pull together a coherent picture of a man whose career has taken in everything from the groundbreaking experimental punktonica of Sydney mid-80s noiseniks Thug to the lilting, dark country of his recent material with the Dark Horses.

From the hard edged pub rock of the Beasts Of Bourbon’s, a snarling slice of filthy pub rock to the evocative soundscapes of The Cruel Sea, whose extraordinary 1991 single ‘This Is Not The Way Home’ placed Perkins’ world-weary growl in a new musical context and heralded the emergence of an entirely original yet archetypically Australian sound. Then there’s the Tex, Don & Charlie albums, which saw Perkins joining forces with the legendary Don Walker, Cold Chisel’s pianist and master songwriter and son of the Clarence Valley, and Charlie Owen, previously Australia’s best kept musical secret.

Now is Tex’s exciting new (and long overdue) collaboration with Matt Walker (a great artist in his own right) for epic duo shows. It’s a blues swamp-groove kinda thing that’s a little reminiscent of some of the things in Tex’s back catalogue. Many new originals inhabit the setlist, but see them now while they still have to flesh out the set with a few Cruel Sea covers!

The duo will be supported by three of of Australia’s greatest players, Geoff Achison, Dave Hole and Shane Pacey paying homage to BB, Freddie and Albert, as well as Georgia Rodgers.

Goanna – Celebrating 40 Years of Spirit of Place

Saturday, November 5, 7:30pm

In 2022, Shane Howard, Rose Bygrave, Marcia Howard and Graham Davidge, together with special guests, embark on a new journey, paying homage to their classic songs and reigniting the Goanna spirit once more.

Goanna is proudly presented as part of the 2022 Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival.

Kerryn Fields, Hannah Acfield and Luke Watt at the Old Church on the Hill

Saturday, November 5, 6:30pm

Three remarkable ‘throwback’ singer/songwriters perform in Bendigo’s most welcoming venue – The Old Church on the Hill – as part of Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival #10.
