Melbourne’s best blues band The Hornets bring 25th anniversary show to Geelong

Featuring some of the country’s well-known and respected musicians, The Hornets have been a mainstay of Melbourne and Australia’s blues and roots scene for two and a half decades and it’s time to celebrate their contribution.

Described by The Age Newspaper as Melbourne’s best blues band, the band will be celebrating their silver anniversary by taking to the intimate stage at the iconic Pistol Pete’s Food N Blues this Friday, November 18 from 9:30pm.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around the region here

The band, which can appear as a duo, trio, four, five or six piece, have become a regular fixture on Australia’s blues and roots music scene. The current lineup of the band includes its three constant members in singer, songwriter and guitarist, Craig Horne; ARIA Hall of Fame guitarist Jeff Burstin (Jo Jo Zep, Black Sorrows); and ARIA Award-winning keyboardist Bruce Haymes (Archie Roach, Paul Kelly), plus the best rhythm section in the business Yuri Pavlinov (Bamboos, Cat Empire) on bass and The Badloves drummer Chris Tabone.

The band will be bringing along their ninth and newest album, Lowdown In Lockdown, with songs like ‘Nothing Stays the Same’ and the stunning gospel fuelled ‘Distracted by Distractions’ that captures the blues and boredom of musicians being trapped at home and denied the stage for 18 months. Rowdy opener ‘I Ain’t Drunk (Just Drinking)’, is soaked in the relief and release of winning freedom.

Released back in 2021, the album was written and recorded during Melbourne’s lockdown, with a few of the band’s socially isolated friends, including Lindsay Field, Steve Williams, ( both from John Farnham’s band) Sam Lemann, Alex Vella-Horne on backups on a couple of tracks, Louie Burstin on slide plus all the regulars.

Having played literally thousands of foot-stompin’ shows up and down the country, you can expect an impressive, tight performance from the band on Friday.

It all does down on Friday, November 18 at Pistol Pete’s Food N Blues in Geelong from 9pm, with show at 9:30pm. Purchase tickets here

A massive dog-friendly night market is heading to the Geelong Racecourse this weekend

If that sounds right up your alley, then mark November 18 in your calendar, because that’s when the Piccadilly Market makes its way to Geelong for an epic night event.

From 5pm on Friday, November 18 2022 at the Geelong Racing Club, the Piccadilly Night Market is all about supporting the local makers in the region – and after the couple of years that we’ve all had, there’s never been a better time to support locals.

Simply described as a design market, the Piccadilly Market is perfect for those wanting to support local businesses all under one roof, giving shoppers the opportunity to talk to the makers and get a feel for bespoke handmade products. There is nothing quite like purchasing something from the person who made it.

After its ridiculously popular Night Market at Mt Duneed in July, the market is once again taking on a night glow and will see the beloved Geelong Racing Club transform into the kind of shopping wonderland worth getting excited about, tempting you off the couch with an epic program of food, drinks, live entertainment and artisan market stalls.

The market will be hosting more than 70 stalls spanning Geelong’s most talented jewellers, fashion designers, illustrators, artists, food producers, and makers, all be there to provide you with quirky buys and artsy gift ideas for everyone on your fast-approaching Christmas list.

Alongside all the products up for grabs, this night market will also see two bars, food trucks galore, a fun farm, giant darts, human soccer balls, a chalk painting area and live entertainment from the legendary Piano Bar, making this quite the outing for all. It’s also dog-friendly so it’s literally a full family affair. You can also reserve a table (limited so get in quick) for the night which makes it a great opportunity to have end of year drinks before the real silliness begins.

And let’s be real: this market is also great for maybe picking up a little something for yourself (after you’ve gotten your Christmas list all sorted, of course).

Entry to this night market is $5 for 16+, free for kids Under 16 and there is plenty of free parking. So, round up your pals, come hungry and have a good time.

It all goes down at Geelong Racing Club at 99 Breakwater Road, Breakwater on Friday, November 18 from 5pm.

Sawyers Arms Tavern has launched an epic ‘feed me’ menu feast from an ex-Movida chef

Boasting modern Australian fare in the heart of Geelong, Sawyers Arm Tavern is gifting Geelong foodies a new stress-free, budget-friendly lunching experience with its brand new ‘Feed Me’ menu, available for lunch seven days a week.

Alleviating the unnecessary and very real pain of choosing a single dish, for $65, guests may enjoy their choice of three courses and one of the pub’s signature cocktails. The Feed Me menu can be ordered by a single diner, or groups can share a wide selection of dishes, effectively working their way through much of the menu.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

Perfect for those indecisive groups (you know the ones we’re talking about), newly-appointed Executive Chef Jackson Hunt (ex-Movida and Fitzroy’s Builders Arms Hotel) has developed a menu that embraces modern Australian cuisine while retaining key dishes that have been enjoyed by the pub’s clientele for years. When pressed to choose a favourite dish, Jackson recommends the “simple yet robust” pork belly, which is offset with celeriac, apple and cabbage remoulade.

Jackson said, “When I look at a pub menu, I like to see a particular style really explored, rather than a collection of different unrelated dishes. A lot of the thought behind this menu stems from my time at the Builder’s Arms under Andrew McConnell. My vision for Sawyers Arms is to try and make it slightly more European/Modern Australian, while really honing the things that it’s known for, like steak”.

Cementing the tavern’s place as a must-visit, the share-style feast of dishes includes entrees like Leek, spinach & 500 day-aged cheddar croquettes; Saganaki, figs marinated in port & macadamia; and Baked scallops, cauliflower puree & crispy pancetta (2 serve) Calamari, cucumber, roasted peppers & chickpea salad; and mains like Kingfish, grilled asparagus, Goolwa pippies & salsa verde; Roasted chicken Maryland with parsnip puree, mushroom in garlic & rosemary butter Prawn linguine in a tomato sugo with fresh lemon & parsley; Red lentil dahl, fried chickpeas, crispy kale & jasmine rice; and Beef cheek in a red wine, pumpkin with burnt batter & pickled fennel salad.

As for dessert, indulge with lemon tart with berry compote & mint, or Strawberry sorbet with fresh fruit.

“Coming into summer, I love the kingfish on the Feed Me menu. It is light and fresh, and pairs well with a Chardonnay. I also like the flavour balance of the orecchiette,” says Jackson.

The Feed Me lunch menu also comprises a choice of four signature cocktails. Guests may enjoy the drink-of-the-moment, Negroni Sbagliato, a Newtown Mule, or try a ‘Pete’s Chili Margarita’ or ‘Clats Collins’ – both named in tribute to the venue’s previous family owners.

There’s no downsides to this absolute feast, though it should be noted that The Feed Me menu must be ordered by the whole table (although there is no minimum number of guests set). So bring your hungry friends only.

If that wasn’t enough, the Sawyers Arms Tavern has also launched its ‘Steak and Rockford Red Wine’ lunches, pairing scotch, eye fillet, wagyu rump and rib-eye steak with a variety of award-winning red wines from the premium Barossa Valley winery, Rockford.

RÜFÜS DU SOL launch Hard Kombucha brand Mate Maker Co.

ARIA #1 and Grammy-winning electronic band and all-around legendary trio Rüfüs Du Sol have made their first steps into the beverage market with the launch of hard kombucha brand, Mate Maker Co.

The label is co-founded with the band’s lifelong friends and industry veterans Justin Medcraft of Pabst Brewing Co,  the electronic trio’s manager Danny Robson, and Tom Appleton of Four Pillars Gin.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

Mate Maker hard kombucha is an organic low-sugar and gluten-free alcoholic creation, crafted using only real fruit, green tea, botanicals and simple ingredients. With transparency and simplicity as key principles of the brand, backed by sustainable packaging and organic ingredients, Mate Maker is a refreshing, delicious and real fruit alternative for those who choose to ‘drink better’.

The dream team of Rüfüs Du Sol, Medcraft, Robson and Appleton co-founded Mate Maker co with a values-driven idea to develop a better drink option in every sense of the word. With a shift towards moderation and mindfulness, this group of friends asked themselves: if you choose to drink, why not ‘drink better’? So they set out to create a transparent drink made from better ingredients, that’s better for the world.

Mate Maker hard kombucha is small-batch brewed, vegan and uses no artificial sweeteners, colours, flavours or hidden ingredients unknown to the drinker. Key to its success is the simplicity of the recipe. A light, crisp and refreshing combination of organic fruit and cold pressed botanicals are blended together with our green tea kombucha to create the ultimate sundowner bevvy made for summer. At 4% ABV and containing no more than 110 calories and less than 5g of sugar per can, Mate Maker launches in two flavours:

Mate Maker Mango Peach Smash Hard Kombucha: this light and bright beverage captures golden hour in a can. The tropical collision of mangoes and peaches with a citrusy splash of lemon anchors a smooth and balanced finish, ripe for kicking back over a drink with mates in a summer setting.

Mate Maker Citrus Mule Hard Kombucha: spinning the tried and true Moscow mule on its head, this classic nod to bright citrus from real limes and cold-pressed orange peel throws in a subtle spicy kick of ginger to become the ultimate booch cocktail and enlivened crowd favourite.

“When we discovered hard kombucha a couple years back in the US, we immediately thought people in Australia would get it. This is something we’ve put a lot of care and effort into and we’re stoked to be able to unveil it now right before we come home to play shows in Australia for the first time in three years. We think people will love it as much as we do,” says Jon George, of RÜFÜS DU SOL.

“Drinks innovation is so important for our customers and with the rapid growth of seltzer these last two years we’re confident that Mate Maker Hard Kombucha delivers all of the same functional benefits with a liquid that tastes really great,”adds co-founder Tom Appleton.

More flavours in the Mate Maker co range will arrive later next year, alongside innovation launches in 2023. In addition to sustainable packaging and organic ingredients, Mate Mater is a 1% for the Planet member, meaning they donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes fighting climate change. Stay tuned for further information on Mate Maker’s sustainability efforts targeted at specific action groups with a focus on climate change and local level initiatives.

Available at matemakerco.com, independent retailers, RÜFÜS DU SOL shows this December (NSW, VIC, QLD & SA) and upcoming summer festivals.

Post hardcore icons Saosin are heading to Australia in 2023

Their powerful live shows and heavy internet presence, coupled with critical praise from the industry and media alike, cultivated a loyal underground following which has remained strong for the past two decades. Catch them when they head to Melbourne’s own Croxton Bandroom on March 9, 2023.

Saosin Australia tour 2023

  • March 12 – Lion Arts Factory, Adelaide
  • March 14 – Amplifier Bar, Perth

One of post hardcore’s formative pillars. Saosin were among the first bands to fully embrace social media as a way of promoting themselves (remember MySpace?) and they burst onto the scene in 2003 with their explosive debut EP, Translating The Name.

Fronted by their original vocalist, Anthony Green, the band will be playing bangers from all of their highly influential albums, 2006’s self titled, 2009’s In Search Of Solid Ground and 2016’s Along The Shadow and from their groundbreaking EP’s including their debut, 2003’s Translating The Name.

Songs such as You’re Not Alone, Voices, Seven Years and Collapse which have all racked up well over 10 million spins each and helped define a sub-genre.

Rounded out by guitarist Beau Burchell, bassist Chris Sorenson, and drummer Alex Rodriguez, Saosin’s scene-defining blend of heady artistic intellectualism and passion is an adventurous rush of energy.

Equal parts confidence and vulnerability, it straddles the line between metalcore angst and melodic experimentalism and strikes the perfect balance of what makes their music simultaneously pretty and brutal.

Their first visit since 2010, catch them at their first ever headline shows in Australia by grabbing your tickets here

A post shared by thundamentals (@thundamentals)

With over a decade in the game, Thundamentals’ journey has been one of triumph and growth. From selling out shows in all corners of the country racking up millions of streams worldwide and landing multiple platinum and gold singles, Tuka, Jeswon and Morgs have consistently pushed Thundamentals to new heights, standing tall as one of the most notable names in homegrown hip-hop.

Like so many of us, Thundamentals went through an immense period of growth during the global pandemic. An uncertain future was lingering, and the group were unable to connect with fans at live shows as they had done so frequently throughout their career. Forced to reconsider their approach, they began to write constantly—at times, in person and at others virtually. At first, there was no particular goal in mind beyond pure escapism and maintaining a connection, but as the months went on the realisation set in that regardless of the physical limitations, there was still a lot of life happening.

Thundamentals’ sixth album All This Life came about from these conversations. The project represents a rise against adversity and a celebration of the goodness in life. Acting as a beacon of light in dark times, All This Life aims to leave listeners with a sense of hope and uplift them in times of uncertainty.

Sonically, the album could be considered a fresh direction for Thundamentals, but it’s one they took organically. Having been thrust into new circumstances with a newfound appreciation for life and creating also led to inspiration being drawn from childhood favourites from outside of their traditionally hip hop roots—iconic ‘60s rock idols like David Bowie and The Doors to the raw expression of ‘90s bands like Nirvana and Faith No More laid the foundations for an album that mixes nostalgic sounds with modern techniques while still incorporating the group’s origins in hip hop and R&B culture.

The final piece of the puzzle was collaborator Carl Dimataga, who brought his expert musicianship to the project. All This Life is a rose growing from concrete. A joyful, vibrant and uplifting body of work forged in darkness yet drenched in light. It represents not only a celebration of life itself but also the band’s position this far into their career. It’s a declaration: “We are still standing, and we have so much love and life still left to give.”

Started in Geelong in 2018 by Philippine-born musician Eli Merquita and Geelong artist Joshua Maxwell de Hoog, the Jazz in a Hat collective brings local musicians together to throw their names in a hat, form a band and play a live improvisational set to an audience. The electric monthly sessions at Analogue Academy were soon selling out, with a waitlist of musicians wanting to participate.

Support from the City of Greater Geelong’s Creative Communities Grant Program allowed Jazz in a Hat to expand to a festival format for the first time, making this a not-to-be-missed experience.

The family friendly program begins at 2pm, with activities available for kids. Attendees are encouraged to pack a picnic and blanket.

Jazz in a Hat Spring Fest takes place 19 November, 2pm-9pm at Heights Heritage House, 140 Aphrasia St Newtown. Tickets can be purchased here

“Despite our best efforts, my team and I have come to realise that global logistical issues have made it impossible for us to deliver the show that I feel Australians deserve,” Bublé wrote in a statement.

“Although it’s completely disappointing for all of us, I wanted to be transparent with you and hope you can understand what a difficult decision this was to make.

“I appreciate your patience and look forward to seeing you this coming June.

“Love, Michael.”

Last time Bublé graced our shores was back in 2020 – for the Australian leg of his hugely successful, sold-out ‘An Evening With Michael Bublé’ tour – he jumped at the chance to throw his support behind Australia’s bushfire appeal with a live cross, from one of his Melbourne shows to the Fire Fight Australia bushfire benefit concert in Sydney.

Australia has embraced this universally loved Canadian artist right from the get-go, with his 2003 self-titled debut album topping the ARIA Albums Chart. Bublé has since gone on to celebrate 4 more chart-topping albums in this country – 2013’s ‘To Be Loved’, 2011’s iconic ‘Christmas’, 2009’s ‘Crazy Love’ and 2007’s ‘Call Me Irresponsible’ – as well as 3 records that peaked at #2. Throughout the course of his extraordinary career, Bublé has sold over 75 million albums.

His 11th album ‘Higher’ contains more self-penned original Bublé songs plus reinvigorated standards including a duet with Willie Nelson (‘Crazy’), Bob Dylan’s ‘Make You Feel My Love’ and the Sam Cooke classic ‘Bring It On Home To Me’.

As for his performance, Bublé is charismatic beyond belief and his between-song banter, often categorised by open-hearted goofiness. Something to look forward to in 2023.

On display for three days only is the showcasing of Indigenous artist Anny Hay (Pia Designs). Being of Tasmanian origin, she’s set to decorate the interior of the Royal Exhibition Building with vibrant, colourful artwork that will give the space a breath of fresh air.

Not only will you be able to appreciate the artwork, Karina Jambrak brings her nature inspired ambient pieces to the market stall. This is the perfect opportunity to get your hands on some timeless pieces.

If you’re thinking about giving your fur baby a treatment as well, why not try Scratch’s premium-made Australian dog food. There will be jewellery especially made by Indigenous creator Haus of Dizzy. There will even be customed designed glassware from Hot Haus Glass Studio. If that doesn’t prove that there isn’t something for everyone, maybe the food will change your mind.

Yum Cha is bringing their oriental tea house with an array of simply delicious dumplings, the famous Footscray locals Pie Thief bring their pastry expertise, and it wouldn’t be complete without Taco Truck placing the cherry on top. You can shop and then refuel on some of the greatest culinary delights.

All happening under the beautiful interior of The Royal Exhibition Building, The Big Design is set to make a well-earned comeback.
