Dishlickers: From punk to funk, De Porsal break the mould in trailblazing third album

Their first two albums, Soft Cowboy, and now Dishlickers, stand up as a slap in the face to anyone who has ever said ‘It’s all been done before’.

A self-proclaimed ‘mutt’ album, Dishlickers spans everything from egg punk and jangle pop to blues and funk. What makes it even cooler, is the fact that each song on Dishlickers was written and recorded over a single day. As a result, it maintains a boisterous improvisational nature, effortlessly flowing between different styles, eras and ideas to deliver an off-the-cuff release that can only be described as individualistic.

If it sounds like I’m frothing, it’s because I am.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

From the angular art-punk nature and showgrounds MC vocals of ‘Orate’, to the herky-jerky blues rock flavour of ‘Germany Germany’, and the punk-infused psychedelic on ‘Films’, it’s a sound that couldn’t be more their own.

In a standout moment, title-track ‘Dishlickers’ sees the experimentation taken to another level, feeling as if the brothers plugged in their guitars and chucked them in the washing machine to create a chaotic psych-frenzied crescendo.

If this is what these boys can create within a day for each song, I can’t wait to see what direction they head towards in the future. Based on the originality of their first two releases, it’ll probably be a genre that they invent themselves.

Dishlickers is out now on BDK Records.

Drunk Mums announce most extensive national tour to date

The announcement coincides with the release of their latest single and accompanying music video, ‘New Australia,’ offering fans a taste of what’s to come from their upcoming album, Beer Baby, slated for release on March 7.

Drunk Mums National Tour

  • Friday May 17th: Amplifier, Perth
  • Saturday May 18th: Jive, Adelaide
  • Friday May 31st: Crowbar, Sydney
  • Friday June 7th: The Brightside, Brisbane
  • Friday June 21st: Max Watts, Melbourne

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Described as a “beer-drenched belter” by triple j’s Joe Kahn, ‘New Australia’ is more than just a track; it’s a gritty reflection of working-class life. Penned by songwriter Jake Doyle during his stint at a mundane warehouse job, the song captures the frustration and monotony of everyday existence with raucous punk riffs and raw, relatable lyrics.

Accompanying the single is a music video that encapsulates the essence of Drunk Mums’ carefree spirit. Shot against the backdrop of Melbourne’s west, the video is a frenetic montage of beer-swilling antics and blistering guitar solos, serving as a visual homage to the band’s unapologetic approach to life.

But the excitement doesn’t stop there. Beer Baby, the band’s forthcoming album, promises to deliver ten relentless party anthems, each one a raucous celebration of hedonism and chaos. Recorded at Hothouse Audio with Jez Giddings, the album is a testament to Drunk Mums’ unwavering commitment to their craft. It follows the release of their 2018 album Urban Cowboy, which earned them airplay across PBS, Triple R, FBi, 4ZZZ, Edge and Radio Adelaide, as well as spins on tastemaker US radio station KEXP.

Formed in 2011, Drunk Mums have solidified their reputation as one of Australia’s most electrifying live acts, having graced stages at festivals like Laneway and BIGSOUND, and supported the likes of Amyl and the Sniffers and Richie Ramone. Now, fresh from their UK/EU tour, the band is gearing up for a nationwide run that promises to be nothing short of epic.

‘We don’t want to rely on luck’: Wanderer Festival moves to biennial event

In a strategic move aimed at ensuring the sustainability and longevity of Wanderer Festival, Pambula Beach’s boutique music and arts experience, organisers have announced a shift to a biennial schedule. The festival will return to the coast from 3-5 October 2025.

Founder and industry powerhouse Simon Daly explained that the decision was driven by the need for more time to plan and execute the event effectively.

“We have created something very special and really important for the NSW Far South Coast and there’s a great sense of responsibility that comes with that. We have to make sure we are always taking the best pathways to keep producing the most amazing and sustainable event possible,” he explains.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

“An event of this scale really needs more than 12 months lead time to prepare. We’ve been incredibly lucky with the quality of artists so far but we don’t want to rely on luck – a longer lead time opens up so many more options, particularly in terms of international artists who plan their touring schedules 1-2 years in advance.

“Events are all-consuming for everyone involved and moving to a biennial format feels more sustainable. An event every two years gives everyone a breather and more time to plan. It also gives our audience a chance to do other things every second year.”

Wanderer Festival, which made its debut in 2022 and saw significant success in subsequent years, has become a cornerstone event for the NSW Far South Coast. Recognised for its commitment to social, cultural, and environmental values, Wanderer attracts thousands of attendees from across Australia.

While the announcement of a ‘gap year’ may disappoint some fans, the festival reassured attendees that the extended hiatus will be put to good use. “We will miss you all this year but we will put the extra prep time to good use and are already busy working on bringing you the best ever Wanderer Festival next year. We promise it will be worth the wait!”

Already booked your trip? Don’t cancel those plans just yet. Embrace the spirit of Wanderer and take the opportunity to explore the wonders of the Sapphire Coast. From whale watching to mountain biking at the Gravity Eden Mountain Bike Park, there’s no shortage of adventures waiting to be had.

As Wanderer Festival prepares for its next chapter, fans are urged to stay tuned for updates and announcements regarding the 2025 event here.

The summit will conclude with Global Citizen Nights, an intimate evening of music and storytelling, headlined by Crowded House. Taking place at the Palais Theatre on St Kilda’s foreshore on 6 March, this free, ticketed event will honour the stories of young trailblazers from across the Asia-Pacific region who are profoundly impacting their local communities in the areas of climate action, gender equity and more.

“We’re thrilled to bring Global Citizen back to Australia for the first ever international edition of Global Citizen NOW, where young innovators will take their place alongside leaders in policy, culture, philanthropy and business to drive impactful, sustainable change and address the global challenges shaping tomorrow,” said Global Citizen. “The Asia-Pacific region sits at the epicentre of some of the world’s most pressing issues; but young people are not the passive inheritors of these challenges – they are powerful innovators playing a vital role in solving them, with much to teach the rest of the world. We look forward to a dynamic few days that will shift the future of the region.”

“All my life I have lived and loved being outside enjoying every moment. My parents always highlighted the need to champion the quiet voice of Mother Nature, and now even more so since becoming a grandmother I’ve become acutely aware of my responsibility, and that of my generation, to do everything we can to improve the state of the world we are leaving for our grandchildren,” said Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. “I’m coming to Global Citizen NOW: Melbourne to participate in vital intergenerational conversations with young leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region, who are doing frontline, grassroots work to address the climate crisis, the hunger crisis, girls’ education and issues perpetuating cycles of extreme poverty. I look forward to listening to them, learning from them, and contributing whatever voice I have to speak up for the future of our planet.”

As part of the summit, Global Citizen is honouring 32 young innovators from across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region, who are working to address the issues perpetuating extreme poverty in their communities, through the Youth Leaders Award program. Selected from among hundreds of applicants, these inspiring awardees will travel to Melbourne to attend Global Citizen NOW and participate in a dynamic peer networking and training day alongside other awardees from across the region. They will each receive $5000 to further their vital work toward achieving one or more of the United Nations Global Goals.

TasmanAi: These Tasmanian artists will create whatever you want and send it to you for free

Show us the late Queen Elizabeth being attacked by a flock of seagulls. Show us the most Swedish-looking meal. Show us Spongebob at the JFK assassination. Ha, we laugh. Technology!

I’ll admit, it’s pretty impressive. But you know what else is impressive? Real human artists.

Keep up with the latest in local news and entertainment here.

With this idea in mind, Tourism Tasmania has assembled a team of artists to prove that anything robots can do, people can also do (kind of).

Their new image generator, TasmanAI, allows users to submit a prompt – anything imaginable – and a team of painters, collagers, digital creators, sketchers and ceramicists will select their favourites and bring them to life. If your prompt is chosen, you will receive the original art piece in the mail for free.

Users from across Australia can submit prompts until March 4, and the artists involved in the project include Alan Young, Caleb Nichols-Mansell, Christopher Downes, Eloise Lark, Jamin, Josh Foley, Sam Lyne, Steffi Koppelwell and Wayne Looyen.

“Tasmania itself breeds creativity. It’s the artists themselves that keep making it – it’s simply the Tasmanian way of life. As soon as I moved to Tasmania, I knew it, I could feel it in the air, in the space, in the quiet, in the characters, your senses feel more alive here. Tasmanians live and breathe it,” says actress, producer and Archipelago Productions founder Marta Dusseldorp.

“The TasmanAi generator gives us a platform to showcase this authenticity and creativity ingrained in our being to the rest of the nation.”

With the second-highest number of artists per capita in Australia, Tasmania has become a hot spot for culture over the past decade. Sarah Clarke, the CEO of Tourism Tasmania, says the project highlights the spirit of the island state.

“With TasmanAi, we are showing the world that instant isn’t always better, there is joy in slowing down, taking time to think and celebrating craftsmanship – which is intrinsic to the Tasmanian way of life.”
