Joining Owusu for each show (excluding Perth) will be very special guests, EARTHGANG. Hailing from Atlanta, the acclaimed hip hop duo have been taking the world by storm over the past 12 months; earning GRAMMY nominations of Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Album for their work on Dreamville and J.Cole’s Revenge Of The Dreamers III, and most recently performing their electrifying live show at Coachella. Coupled with Owusu, the shows are set to be an unmissable, high-energy end to what’s been an already incredible year for both artists.

After launching onto the global map with his critically acclaimed debut album, Smiling with No Teeth, Owusu next steps forth with STRUGGLER; an imminent exploration of the chaos and absurdity of life, and our ability to endure. Where Smiling with No Teeth uncovered the battle against depression and racism, STRUGGLER is about how to get through its struggle. The album takes inspiration from a close friend hitting the brink and coming through the other side, in conjunction with prompted questions of life and beauty that Owusu found himself contemplating during readings of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot and Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis. Recorded between the US and Australia, the album’s producers traverse musical genres; from Jason Evigan (RUFUS DU SOL, SZA), to Mikey Freedom Hart (Jon Batiste’s 2021 GRAMMY of the Year Album, We Are), Sol Was (Beyoncé’s Renaissance), and original producers, Andrew Klippel and Dave Hammer.

Additionally, Owusu collaborates with globally-celebrated Aotearoa (New Zealand) visual artist, Lisa Reihana, on the album’s complete visual identity. Having been showcased in elite institutions throughout the US and EU, including the Venice Biennale for her critically-acclaimed video installation, In Pursuit of Venus [Infected], Reihana’s work spans a diverse range of mediums. From film, to costume and body adornment, plus video installation, Reihana has rightfully earned a reputation as a world-renowned artist and producer, engaging in thought-provoking dialogues around the concept of culture.

Today, while Owusu tours the US in support of Paramore and Bloc Party, including dates at Madison Square Garden after recently wrapping Groovin the Moo festival, his newest chapter unfolds with the album’s leading single “Leaving The Light”. A fervent anthem about survival and perseverance, “Leaving The Light”, sets an urgent tone for the new album. Opening to a spine-crawling run of bass notes, the immediacy hits through Owusu’s feverish verses and echoed shouts. A jolting mix of poetic punk and melodic catharsis, Owusu explores form and rhythm across the new single.

The winners of the 2023 Australian Hotels Association, Victoria (AHA Vic) State Awards for Excellence – the pinnacle event of the Victorian hospitality industry – were announced at Crown Palladium once again this week, with a bunch of favourites taking out the top honours.

Held annually, the awards recognise hotels and pubs in Victoria – both metropolitan and regional – that demonstrate excellence across 40 distinct categories, from excellence in service, best chef and best family dining, to the best outdoor experience, best innovative retail space and even best gaming venue. A cornerstone of Torquay and our region, the last few years have seen an inconceivable regeneration and transformation of the venue which has solidified itself as a cultural gem as much as an iconic musical one.

With general manager Joel Taylor and local musician Luke Hindson at the helm, the Torquay Hotel has experienced an incredible reawakening, with their aim to bring live, local music and atmosphere back to the heart of the surf coast. Since the first summer series back in 2018 with San Cisco, Ziggy Alberts and Phil Jamieson, the hotel’s flourishing music culture is attracting world-class acts not just in summer, but all year round, and fostering homegrown talent until they themselves are world-class acts. And no matter your musical persuasion, there’s something for everyone.

The rise of the Torquay Hotel: The beating heart of live music in regional Victoria

The proof is in, The Torquay Hotel has become Victoria’s best music venue, dedicated to putting on killer gigs and giving up-and-coming bands (not just from our own backyard, but from across the world) a stage and now they’re getting the recognition they so dearly deserve.

“Finding the confidence to write and perform in my matrilineal language Te reo Māori wasn’t easy,” says Jen Cloher. “Many of my Mother’s generation never learned due to laws passed by the New Zealand government discouraging the practice of Te reo Māori in native schools.

“Consequently, they were made to feel shame about their language, culture and Māori identity, and didn’t want their children to experience the same feeling. Bringing my language back into my body and weaving it through my songwriting has been an enormously healing process.

“I have come home to parts of myself that were longing to be known. The experience made me want to hear from other songwriters, both Māori and First Nations, about their experiences of writing and performing in their language.”

Through Jen Cloher’s heartfelt interviews and immersive storytelling, listeners are invited to embark on a captivating journey, where each episode unravels the layers of significance behind these artists’ commitment to their ancestral languages.

Beyond the ratings: The cultural impact of Australia’s Reality TV obsession

Since the first season of Big Brother debuted on our screens in 2001, the genre has become an integral part of Australian television culture, captivating audiences across our sunburnt country. The cultural impact of reality TV on Australia is undeniable, and the statistics reveal just how significant the effect is.

While critics have long debated the merits of reality TV, there is no denying its immense popularity. Australians love talking about their favourite reality TV shows on social media, and every new season and the show is eagerly awaited (FBoy Island Australia, anyone?).

Keep up with the latest Melbourne film and television news here.

The numbers speak for themselves: reality TV shows dominate television in Australia. According to ExpressVPN’s analysis of social media and search trends, Survivor, Married at First Sight (MAFS), and The Block are the most talked-about reality TV shows, with Survivor alone hitting a whopping 108,075 share of voice mentions across social media platforms.

While the top four shows, Married at First Sight, The Block, Masterchef, and LEGO Masters, dominated the charts with the highest viewership numbers during their most recent season finales, Ninja Warrior and Love Island were the most searched shows in Northern Territory and Western Australia, respectively.

So, what do these statistics say about our viewing habits? Beyond numbers, the appeal of these shows lies in the drama, the competition, and the emotional connections that viewers feel with the participants.

One possible explanation for reality TV’s enduring popularity is its comfort and familiarity. Many of these shows follow a similar formula: a group of contestants live together, compete in challenges, and form alliances, all under the watchful eye of cameras. This formula allows viewers to become invested in the contestants and their storylines, fostering a sense of community and shared experience.

Additionally, audiences can tune in week after week to follow their favourite contestants and feel a sense of continuity and routine, providing a sense of community in our hectic modern lives.

At the same time, reality TV also provides a sense of escapism. For many of us, reality TV is an opportunity to switch off from the stresses of everyday life and indulge in guilty pleasures. Shows like Married at First Sight and Love Island offer a glimpse into a world of glamour and luxury, while shows like Survivor provides a chance to escape to an idyllic tropical island.

While it is true that some reality TV shows have been plagued by controversy, such as the cheating scandal at the heart of Married at First Sight in 2021, it is essential to note that not all reality TV is created equal. Many shows aim to inspire and uplift their audiences, such as Masterchef, which celebrates the art of cooking and encourages viewers to pursue their passions.

One of Australia’s most popular reality TV shows, Married at First Sight, exemplifies the emotional connections viewers can make with the participants. The show features strangers getting married and is known for the juicy, juicy drama that often unfolds, captivating fans who tune in season after season.

One reason viewers are drawn to shows like Married at First Sight is the chance to observe human relationships and behaviour in a unique way. These shows offer viewers the opportunity to watch the participants navigate the complexities of love and relationships, which is something many of us can (hopefully) relate to. Viewers often become invested in the participants’ storylines and are curious to see how they will play out.

Survivor Australia is another popular reality TV show that has captured the attention of Australians. The show involves contestants stranded on a deserted island and competing in challenges to be the last person standing. Survivor is also known for the complex social dynamics that develop among the contestants.

The Block is another reality TV show in Australia that has become a cultural phenomenon, amassing 1.38 million total views during its finale. The show features teams of contestants renovating houses and apartments to sell them for the highest price.

Reality TV has had a significant cultural impact on Australians, influencing their entertainment choices, attitudes and behaviours. The popularity of shows like Married at First Sight and Survivor demonstrates the country’s fascination with drama and competition, while The Block and Masterchef showcase Australians’ love for renovation and cooking.

The rise of streaming services has made reality TV more accessible than ever, leading to increased viewership and engagement on social media. As we move into 2023, we expect to see new genres and concepts emerge in reality TV, further shaping Australia’s cultural landscape.

Whether it’s love, drama, or adventure, it’s clear that reality TV will continue to capture the hearts and minds of Australians for years to come.

“This store is my love letter to Geelong”: Popcultcha Records on becoming one of Australia’s best independent record stores

There’s just something to be said about the experience of selecting a distinctive vinyl from a shelf, extracting the record from inside and sliding it onto the player. It’s absolute *magic*.

Since its move to the old Griffiths Bookstore at 96/98 Ryrie Street back in 2021, Popcultcha, Australia’s premier pop culture retailer, has been aiding local music lovers in search of wax with its dedicated record section within the store and online.

Now giving vinyl purveyors something truly to get excited about, Popcultcha is seriously changing the game locally with the launch of their latest retail venture Popcultcha Records

Taking over the entire upstairs level of their Flagship Ryrie Street store in the Old Griffiths Bookstore building, expanding into vinyl was always part of the Popcultcha vision for founder Ash Howard though the space upstairs wasn’t originally flagged as an option.

“It’s a passion project of mine. I’ve been collecting records for more than 10 years, so I always intended to steer Popcultcha in that direction at some stage.

“When we bought the building, downstairs was always going to be Popcultcha and we weren’t quite sure what we were going to do upstairs. We were thinking about making it into a high-end accommodation,” Howard explains.

“But the whole record thing kind of took off and it really needed its own space. We were too cramped trying to fit it all into the existing footprint of the store downstairs.”

Climbing the almost hidden staircase to the right of the Ryrie Street store, customers are met with over 4000 in-stock vinyl record titles, as well as an incredible range of books, comics, graphic novels, manga, apparel and much more.

The space is expansive with rows upon rows of vinyl, arranged from A to Z and primed for music lovers to indulge in aimless wandering, finger-flipping through never-ending stands of vinyl and making crucial decisions based solely on an album’s cover art.

Staffed by experts and collectors with obsessive ears and an exhaustive understanding of their chosen genre, here you’ll find everything from Xavier Rudd, Van Morrison, Nick Cave, The Kooks, Black Sabbath and Prodigy, to Pixies, Taylor Swift and Silverchair, and everything you could imagine in between. With plans to feature a range of local artists too, there’s even a whole section dedicated to soundtracks, with specific soundtracks coming from New Orleans and Austin.

“My favourite record store in America is Amoeba Music in LA [one of the World’s Largest Independent Record Stores and a music lovers’ hangout for free live shows] so that was the model for me.

“We’ve just arranged it from A to Z, we’ve not tried to pigeonhole any artist or any genre. It’s more just an exhaustive kind of catalogue of anything and everything.”

Described as a passion project, Popcultcha Records is Howard’s love letter to his hometown, and his contribution to seeing Geelong become the home of live music it once was.

“When I turned 18 in Geelong, there was a vibrant music scene; there were so many pubs you could go to any pub and there would be live music, and that just doesn’t happen anymore,” Howard reflects.

“The Barwon Club do an amazing job in bringing acts to town and we love that, so we want to be complimenting what they’re doing with in-store events or experiences, but we’ve also created a pretty unique space up there and if we can be doing some live performances and then that can be our little part to add to Geelong’s music scene.”

With neon signs, timber floors and green walls, the store can do this thanks to a dedicated stage, which has already hosted in-store artist appearances by bands and acoustic musicians, with plans to host more exclusive events, signings, meet and greets, and showcase local artists and musicians regularly.

Popcultcha’s expansion into the world of vinyl is a natural progression for the company, which has been at the forefront of pop culture retail in Australia for over a decade. By branching out into records, Popcultcha can offer music lovers a new and exciting way to engage with their favourite artists and discover new ones.

“Our aim is to be one of Australia’s best independent record stores. So if we can do that, I think what we have to offer versus other record stores is in all our complimentary products as well. From actions figures and statues to books, collectables and records, it all makes for a very interesting visit when you come to Popcultcha.”

Geelong’s Premier Independent Record Store, Popcultcha Records, is located at Level 1 (Upstairs) / 96/98 Ryrie St, Geelong and is open seven days a week.

Regional Victorian distiller Echuca Distillery wins international gold in San Francisco

In an Australian first, Echuca Distillery, based in the Victorian river port town, recently became the first Australian distillery to win not one, but two gold medals for their Agave Spirits, at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition – the world’s largest and most prestigious competition for premium Agave Spirits.

Made from start to finish at the four-year-old distillery, Echuca Distillery’s Chilli Lime and Smoked Agave Spirits were awarded gold medals, while the Silver and Gold Agave Spirits took home silver medals … a real vindication of the attention to detail that the distillery puts into the production process.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

Agave Spirit production (including Tequila, Mezcal and Agave Spirit) is seeing unprecedented growth globally, and Echuca Distillery’s twin brother owner-operators, Peter (Head Distiller) and David De Vries (Operations Manager) are on a mission to be at the forefront of this industry from both an innovation and quality perspective.

The brothers’ backgrounds in the manufacturing of flavours and fragrances – which is something they believe is in their DNA – has enabled them to research and develop the perfect mix of ingredients which includes 100% Blue Weber Agave Nectar which they import from Mexico.

“Distilling Agave Spirit from the nectar is a little like distilling Rum from molasses,” explains Peter.

“The Agave Nectar has a rich, slightly smoky flavour and aroma which we ferment in-house, then twice distill with particular care put into maintaining the flavour and aroma of the Agave Spirit,” continued Peter.

“We are really proud of what we have achieved at Echuca Distillery in a relatively short space of time,” says David.

The brothers are keen to celebrate and share their passion for what they do with as many people as possible.

“Although we have a small list of stockists, Bar Lee is Echuca Distillery’s exclusive cellar door and is a great place to enjoy some of the awarding winning spirits in a cocktail and on their own,” David concluded.

As the first distillery in Victoria to produce Agave Spirits and one of only two or three in Australia to distill locally, Echuca Distillery is one to add to your must-visit list, being the first Australian distillery to win gold (actually, two golds and two silvers) for the distillation of Agave Spirit at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
