Popcultcha opens huge one-stop shop for vinyl records in Geelong with Popcultcha Records

Popcultcha Records is celebrating its grand opening with a free in-store music festival this Saturday.

As the resurgence of vinyl continues to bring music consumption into a bright new era for absolutely anyone, the demand for the best new music on wax, as well as ownership of the classics and rarities, is rising more than ever. There’s just something to be said about the experience of selecting a distinctive sleeve from a shelf, extracting the disc from inside and sliding it onto the player. It’s absolute *magic*.

Since its move to the old Griffiths Bookstore at 96/98 Ryrie Street back in 2021, Popcultcha, Geelong’s premier destination for anything collectible-related, has been aiding local music lovers in search of wax with its dedicated record section within the store.

Well, giving vinyl purveyors something truly to get excited about, Popcultcha are seriously changing the game locally with the launch of their latest retail venture Popcultcha Records.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

A passion project for Popcultcha Founder Ash Howard, Popcultcha Records is the new independently owned one-stop shop for vinyl records in the Geelong region, which Ash has described as his love letter to his hometown, and his contribution to seeing Geelong become the home of live music it once was.

Located upstairs above their Flagship Ryrie Street store in the Old Griffiths Bookstore building (entry is through an almost hidden staircase to the right of the store), Geelong customers will be met with over 4,000 in-stock vinyl record titles, as well as in an incredible range of books, comics, graphic novels, manga, apparel and much more.

The space is expansive with rows upon rows of vinyl, primed for music lovers to indulge in aimless wandering, finger-flipping through never-ending stands of vinyl and making crucial decisions based solely on an album’s cover art.

Staffed by experts and collectors with obsessive ears and an exhaustive understanding of their chosen genre, here you’ll find everything from Xavier Rudd, Van Morrison, Nick Cave, The Kooks, Black Sabbath and Prodigy, to Pixies, Taylor Swift and Silverchair, and everything you could imagine in between. There’s even a whole section dedicated to soundtracks.

With neon signs, timber floors and green walls, the store also features a dedicated stage with the promise of a rotating door of in-store artist appearances and exclusive events, showcasing local artists and musicians regularly.

A collector’s utopia, Popcultcha Records will be celebrating its Grand Opening on Saturday 1 April, with a free in-store music festival headlined by Blowers, Split System and Doe St.

Live acts are taking the stage from 12pm until late, but the store is open to the public from 9am where customers can take advantage of a celebratory 10% OFF storewide sale. There will also be a range of giveaways and prizes will be up for grabs throughout the day and you can bet there will be a lot of decent conversations and bloody good times too.

This is a free event and open to the public, with catering by Steampocket Catering.
