From multiple-award winning playwright Samah Sabawi, THEM arrives at the Geelong Arts Centre this August - a compelling tale of survival, friendship, and the things we are willing to do to protect the ones we love.
Described as ‘perhaps the most important piece of theatre you will see this year’, THEM arrives at the Geelong Arts Centre from Tuesday, August 2 to Saturday, August 6 as part of the beloved Geelong Arts Centre’s 2022 season, promising to take audiences into extraordinary circumstances to reveal our shared humanity in the ordinary moments that shape our lives.
Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around the region here.
Written by Samah Sabawi, writer of the award-winning Tales of a City by the Sea, and developed in consultation with people living in conflict zones and displaced by war, the play tells the story of one young family as they face the decision of whether to flee their war-torn city.
Omar, Leila and their young child are counting down the days. Their friends enjoy fantasies of escape and the arrival of Omar’s sister brings a real chance to get out – but at what cost?
Who will leave, who will stay, and what will their choices cost them?
With unexpected tenderness, laughter, and song, the play was first supported by Melbourne Theatre Company’s Cybec Electric program before enjoying a sell-out extended season at the famed La Mama Theatre.
Since its world premiere in 2019, the play has won the Green Room Independent Theatre Award for Best Writing, been nominated for three other Green Room Awards including Best Independent Production, and shortlisted for the prestigious Victorian Premier’s Literary Award as well as the Nick Enright Prize for Playwriting, NSW Premier’s Literary Award.
Based on the real-life stories of people displaced by conflict, this incredible piece of theatre, full of humanity, heart and humour could not be more relevant today.
