Vance Joy: Nation of Two

Vance Joy is now well-established as an institution in Australian music with bona fide hits such as ‘Riptide’ and ‘Mess is Mine’ from debut album ‘Dream Your Life Away’. Now his second album ‘Nation of Two’ has dropped and it is a fantastic sophomore effort. The overall sound is tighter and the production value involved in recording the album is clear.
As has come to be expected from Joy, his themes and lyrics focus on the trials and tribulations of relationships, and though some may consider the same themes unadventurous, it can’t be mistaken that Vance Joy just writes good music.
There is a real story behind the lyrics that is there to be explored and the ebbs and flows of a real relationship are reflected perfectly in ‘Nation of Two’. The irresistibly catchy ‘Lay It All On Me’ is the clear standout with attractive hooks and a banging chorus, it’s a genuinely fun track to listen to.
Other songs that are standouts on the album include ‘Like Gold’ and ‘We’re Going Home’ that offer the same folky aesthetic Australia has become accustomed to with Joy, and we couldn’t be much happier about it.
Whether you are new to Vance Joy or an old head, you will enjoy Nation of Two regardless, perfect for a lazy summer afternoon or over a couple of beers with mates.
