Uber Rent is now a thing, just in time for a well-deserved roadtrip

Like a lot of transport-related industries in Australia and all over the world, Uber has been doing it tough during the coronavirus pandemic, reporting a major loss of revenue due to government restrictions on travel and a large amount of people isolating.

Now as state travel restrictions ease and Aussies are excited to get moving again, Uber are now branching out into the area of car rental with trials in Australia already underway.

Aptly titled Uber Rent, the world-first new feature lets users hire a car through the Uber app.

To use Uber Rent, selected Uber account holders (about 50 per cent of account holders, according to Uber) first need to update their Uber app to the latest version. They’ll then be able to select ‘Rentals’, where they’ll see a search page provided by CarTrawler – a car rental supplier and Uber’s partner. From there, users can choose and book the car of their liking, as well as the date and location.

“While many Australians will drive to a wine region, down the coast or explore the mountains in their own car – not everyone has access to their own private vehicle,” Uber Australia and New Zealand, General Manager Dom Taylor said in a statement. “At Uber we believe you should always be able to get around, even if you don’t own your own car, and Uber Rent is one more way of helping people do just that.”

Uber has also revealed that through this new feature, users will get 10% of the cost back in Uber Credits on the first rental, and earn Uber Rewards points for subsequent rental trips. This means you’ll be able to search for the perfect vehicle for your trip, at the perfect price.

Uber Rent has already begun trials in Brisbane earlier this week, ahead of launching in other Australian cities including Melbourne, the Gold Coast, Sydney and Perth over the next few days.
