Tom Day: Sets Out on his First National Tour

On the rise folk-roots artist, Tom Day, is setting out on his first national tour in support of recent single, When I Fall. Comprising of 18 shows across four states, we chat to Tom before he hits the road.

Hi Tom, thanks for taking some time out of your day to chat with Forte Magazine. You’ve
recently released your single, ‘When I Fall’, can you tell us about who or what inspired this track?

I wrote the song mid last year and it was right around the time of R U OK? Day and things like that, so it’s a lot to do with mental health, which was a big issue in the media at the time, so it was very much a track surrounding that.

We see that you’re based in Margaret River. What’s the music scene like up there?

It’s great! Margaret River has the Settler’s Tavern, which is pretty much where every band plays when they come down this way. Even in Perth as well, there’s so many good bands that have come out of Perth, despite it being one of the most isolated cities in the world.

Last year you also released your debut, Searching For Splendour. How did you find the response to the EP?

It was good! It did well with iTunes (reaching #1 on the Blues chart upon release) and when I released the first single on triple j unearthed, it was definitely a very unexpected response, I guess you could say. I was blown away really, I thought someone was playing a trick on me.

And you’re about to set out on your first national tour. What are you looking most forward to?

Well, it’s actually going to be a pretty diverse tour. My first show is a backyard show and then the next night in Freemantle is going to be like a rowdy, sort of pub gig almost. So, there’s going to be a wide range of shows. And then the Melbourne show is going to be an intimate sort of storytelling, song-singing night. I’m really looking forward to the whole thing – it’s not going to feel like the same show every night.

If you could share the stage with anyone living or passed, who would it be and why?

I’m going to say John Butler, because he’s quite an influential person on my music.

Thanks again for taking the time to chat with Forte today. Any final words?

It’ll be my first time in Melbourne and the regional Vic areas. I’ve got the Sunset Sessions in Melbourne, a Ballarat slot and even a show out in Deans Marsh as well. I’ve been to the Melbourne airport, that’s about it… I’ve heard so many good stories though and I can’t wait to get down there.

Release: When I Fall is available for download and listening on all good platforms.

When & Where: Martians Café, Deans Marsh – November 3; Babushka Bar, Ballarat – November 4; Sunset Sessions, Melbourne – November 5.
