This off-the-grid festival offers three days of nostalgic roleyplay

Words by Staff Writer

One of Australia's most unique festivals returns from November 29 to December 2.

This November, Licola — Victoria’s only completely off-grid town — will transform into a whimsical wonderland for the seventh annual Town Festival, hosted by Culture Jam.

For three magical days, this immersive event invites attendees to step into a vibrant fictional village that thrives on creativity and community spirit. This year, The Town is hopping in the time machine and taking us back to the noisy ’90s.

Set in a former mining town that now harnesses 95% of its energy from solar panels, the Licola Wilderness Village provides an idyllic backdrop for this enchanting festival.

The Town Festival prioritises the atmosphere over the lineup (although we’ll be honest, they’ve had some pretty great lineups over the years). Attendees are encouraged to bring their own characters and ideas, creating a rich tapestry of interactions.

The festival’s culture-first approach was highlighted in 2017 when it sold out without announcing a single act — a testament to its devoted following. Festival director Michael Scarlett’s vision arose from the need for a sustainable festival model, moving away from the pressure of ever-escalating lineups.

This year, attendees will be transported back to the ’90s, with immersive experiences ranging from a recreation of Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged set to a Big Brother House and a video store where actors reenact classic scenes.

With themed campsites, vibrant dress-ups, spontaneous skits and activities including a Battle of the Bands, a frat house party and a graduation prom, the festival fosters a sense of belonging and joy.

The Town Festival prioritizes family-friendly environments and community care, demonstrated by initiatives like a theatrical auction that raised $1,500 for the Asylum Resource Centre.

Amid the playful absurdity, a strong sense of community flourishes, making it one of Victoria’s safest and most beloved festivals. At The Town, imagination knows no bounds, and together, we weave an unforgettable tapestry of experience and connection.
