The Slingers have developed a cult following the contemporary underground/alternative scene and are currently selling over 1000 tickets in their hometown of Melbourne. Having sold out of their first vinyl order in record time, The Slingers today announce a new exclusive colour run of their forthcoming debut LP, Sentimentalism, which is due for release on July 7 via Flightless Records.
The band persistently defy classification, with a colourful catalogue of releases that span from country to folk, grunge rock to ballad, Australiana to Americana, acoustic and spoken word to electronica. The Slingers signed to Flightless Records in 2020, releasing a double A-Side 7-inch vinyl, The Cruellest Cut and Kind Hearts (a collaboration with legend of the Melbourne underground, Spike Fuck). Their releases have garnered a cult following on Youtube & Spotify, resulting in packed pubs and sold-out crowds all over town.
The newest offering, ‘Down The Bone’, was recorded in Melbourne with long-time collaborator Errol Green of Big Yawn. The song was laid down partially on tape, using a variety of original, analogue equipment from the 1970s and 80s.
It follows recent releases, ‘No Harm Done’, ‘Living in the Age of Loneliness’, ‘Streets of Tokyo’ and ‘Our Last Day in the Sun’, which collectively see the band make a foray into ‘Motel Pop’. The genre is less defined by production than by its lyrical content, chronicling with a blend of comedy and tragedy the lives of ordinary people living and struggling through our current age of loneliness. Vocalist Robert J. Mahon explains, “It’s about people finding love as they struggle through the age of loneliness (this age). We certainly don’t want to come across as cynical or making some sort of grand social commentary. It’s about love, and it’s a happy thing.”
The evolution of ‘Motel Pop’ culminates in their incoming full-length LP. Written in a small cabin on a farm outside of Colac, Western Victoria, and Produced by Errol Green (Big Yawn), the album ranges from piano ballads to purely electronic pieces and features appearances from guest musician ‘Evil’ Graham Lee (The Triffids) on pedal steel guitar and Juice Webster on backing vocals.
Tickets to the Sentimentalism album tour are on sale now, with more dates to be announced.
