The Kid LAROI leads nominations for 2022 APRA Music Awards

The nominees for the 40th annual APRA Music Awards, a prestigious event that recognises the achievements of Australian singers and songwriters, have been revealed today.

Leading the pack is the continually rising star The Kid LAROI with four nominations. Co-written by Justin Bieber, the punchy anthem and global sensation ‘STAY’ is nominated for the illustrious peer-voted APRA Song of the Year. The Kid LAROI is this year’s leading nominee and last year’s winner of the Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year award.

Rob Hirst appears on this list for the second year in a row alongside co-writer Tasman Keith, for ‘First Nation’ from The Makarrata Project by Midnight Oil. Rob Hirst won Song of the Year in 2021 with Gadigal Land, alongside co-writers Bunna Lawrie and Joel Davison.

Appearing for the first time on the Peer-Voted Song list are recent Grammy nominees Hiatus Kaiyote with their stripped-back groove track ‘Red Room’from their third studio album Mood Valiant.

Amyl and the Sniffers also make their APRA peer-voted song debut with the blistering and fiery punk track, ‘Guided by Angels’For songwriters Fergus Romer, Amy Taylor and Bryce Wilson, this marks their first nomination in any APRA category.

Also making an APRA first-time nominee is Genesis Owusu for ‘The Other Black Dog’ alongside co-writers Michael Di Francesco, Andrew Klippel and Julian Sudek. Genesis was the winner of the Australia Music Prize and won received top honours in the 2021 Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition.

Other categories include Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year, Most Performed Australian Work, Most Performed Alternative Work, Most Performed Blues & Roots Work, Most Performed Country Work, Most Performed Dance/Electronic Work, Most Performed Hip Hop/Rap Work, Most Performed Pop Work, Most Performed R&B/Soul Work, Most Performed Rock Work and Most Performed International Work.

The 2022 APRA Music awards are taking place on Tuesday May 3 at the Melbourne Town Hall and will be presented by co-hosts Julia Zemiro and Jerome Farah.
