The Grand Magoozi locks in Castlemaine Show

Susie Scurry is The Grand Magoozi, a singer-songwriter who “occupies the stage in a dreamy twilight world”. Her early years were spent learning classical piano.

In her early 20s, Scurry worked behind the bar of Lomond Hotel in East Brunswick where, along with her usual duties, she developed an obsession with old-time and country.

Drawing on a wide range of influences, from Appalachian string-band music to the work of Roy Orbison, the songwoman’s self titled EP was recorded over the course of three days with Nick Huggins. She became the first artist to be signed to Little Lake, the label founded by Huggins and Seagull frontman Chris Bolton.

The Bridge Hotel, Castlemaine – July 22.
