The Drop Bears announce new single for Christchurch shootings Charity

Melbourne’s successful punk rock band, the Drop Bears are proud to present a new single, with all proceeds being donated towards the victims and families of the Christchurch mosque massacre. The single is a modern punk version of John Farnham’s ‘You’re the Voice’ – which still has a very relevant message for us today.

With all the commotion following the shootings, including the Eggboy incident and the debate about Fraser Anning’s censure motion in Parliament, the Drop Bears felt as though the focus had sadly been shifted away from the real victims of the tragedy. The band has also endured their own hardship, with bassist, John Healy, passing away from brain cancer just 18 months earlier.

The band usually performs a cover of a well-known song for an encore. When performing at The Airey’s Inlet Festival, the Drop Bears did a version of ‘You’re the Voice’ – at the time, for a bit of a laugh. But 24 hours after the Christchurch shooting, their Youtube views for that live cover skyrocketed. It was then they realised that the powerful lyric: “We’re all someone’s daughter, we’re all someone’s son. How long can we look at each other, down the barrel of a gun?” was still a very important message worth spreading.

The Drop Bears perform in Melbourne on the 5th and 12th April, and release ‘You’re the Voice’ on the 11th April.
Both shows are free entry, but money collected from donations and sales of the singles will go directly towards the victims of the Christchurch mosque shootings and their families. “No amount of money will bring back their loved ones” the band said, “but we do hope to lessen their burden in some way.”
