The Dead South add new shows to first-ever Australian tour due to overwhelming demand

WORDS BY SIDONIE BIRD DE LA COEUR

After selling out all dates for their upcoming Australian tour in record time, Canadian bluegrass outfit The Dead South are adding a second show in Melbourne.

The unprecedented success of their debut tour of Australia and New Zealand has seen the bluegrass musicians adding new shows to their tour, as well as a slew of venue upgrades across the country.

The Dead South will bring their unique bluegrass sound to Australia and New Zealand for the first time with their One For The Road Tour in January 2023. The band will perform headline shows in Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane and Melbourne before heading across the ditch to Auckland.

The Dead South’s most recent releases are Easy Listening For Jerks, Parts 1 + 2, two companion EPs which explore traditional folk and modern rock anthems alike in The Dead South’s signature boundary-pushing acoustic approach. New videos from the EPs, ‘You Are My Sunshine’ and ‘People Are Strange’ have garnered nearly 10 million views. You can listen to Easy Listening For Jerks, Part 1 here, or Easy Listening For Jerks, Part 2 here.

With banjo, mandolin, cello and guitar, The Dead South look the part of bluegrass traditionalists but, as outsiders to the bluegrass world by circumstances of geography, they’re from the Canadian prairies, and by influences, equal parts finger-picking and punk, there are few comparisons to be made for the four-piece acoustic band. They’ve earned global following sparked by YouTube, early success in German rock clubs and now, sold out shows at iconic venues in many continents.
