From Golden Plains to a sex-positive dance floor banger, Melbourne’s m8riarchy shares her career highlights

Naarm/Melbourne-based artist and producer m8riarchy is a force within the music industry: she commands the speakers and stage with her enrapturing vocals and extensive resume.

Best known for her vocal collaboration with Shouse on ‘Won’t Forget You’, m8riarchy is an immensely talented, highly-skilled producer, committed to redefining the Australian music landscape and promoting women in the space alongside names such as Ninajirachi, Nina Las Vegas and Surusinghe.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, features, interviews and reviews here.

Following her ‘Never Drop’ EP released earlier in 2022, her latest single ‘Body’ journeys through sexuality, self-expression and freedom. It’s an invigorating and playful celebration of all things vulnerable. Channelling the likes of Calvin Harris & Robyn, ‘Body’ signals the high energy and spirit of classic dance-pop anthems.

The euphoric tone of ‘Body’ is set with opening words “Enjoy yourself.” Shimmering synths and deep basslines cultivate a sparkling soundscape through which m8riarchy’s vocals shine. Written 10 years ago, ‘Body’ explores the relationship between confidence and seduction.

“Body is a sex-positive dancefloor banger that explores pleasure and connection. I wanted to create a euphoric symphony that invites listeners to celebrate the joys of sensuality, sexuality, playfulness and self-expression,” m8riarchy says.

In a short time, m8riarchy has already taken her live synthesis and soaring vocals to festival stages like Gaytimes, Brunswick Music Festival, and Melbourne Music Week as well as headline shows at treasured Melbourne venues Colour, The Gasometer and The Evelyn.

To celebrate her new single, a celebration of self-love, m8riarchy is doing just that and sharing her top five career highlights so far.

Golden Plains 2020

It was the last festy before the pandemic really kicked in and our lives changed forever. I’d been performing with Simona Castricum for a long time and it was a huge moment to witness thousands of people in the Sup’ with their boots in the air singing our song ’Supertouch’

Selling out my first live show in 2021

Naarm (Melbourne) had just come out of another hard lockdown and I’ll never forget the feeling of hearing a packed room cheering and all of us moving together for the ‘Missing’ single launch.

Sydney New Year’s Eve 2021 on ABC TV

Joining Shouse for Love Tonight was my first experience performing to an audience of millions on live television and I absolutely loved it. And those fireworks are really something!

Gaytimes 2021

I’ve performed at heaps of festivals with other acts but this was m8riarchy’s festival debut. I opened the main stage on day 2 and played ‘Body’ live for the first time – it was so liberating to be on that stage performing for my community.

Finally releasing ‘Body’

I wrote Body ten years ago and struggled with the production to the point where I had given up on ever releasing it. Matthew Hadley (Total Giovanni) expressed interest in collaborating and, given our similar tastes in dance music, it worked out perfectly for us to bring Body to life together.
