In case you missed it, Geelong’s Lord Nelson is transforming into Malt Shovel Taphouse

Set to open just in time for summer.

The Lord Nelson has long been an old favourite among locals. An iconic pub steeped in history, renovations in the past have resulted in a design emblematic of the great Victorian style pub, making The Lord Nelson an experience that is unparalleled.

Now The Lord Nelson will cease to exist as we know it, transforming into Lion’s craft beer bar brand Malt Shovel Taphouse. With five other venues across Australia, Geelong will mark the sixth ‘craft beer emporium’ and is looking like it will open to the public in November – just in time for summer!

The key takeaways

  • The Lord Nelson is getting a facelift
  • The venue will become a Malt Shovel Taphouse, the sixth in the country
  • It will be completed by summer

The heritage-listed hotel has undergone a $1.1million makeover under plans by owners the Muhor Family, which sees a new beer garden frontage to match the building’s 1920s façade, revamped interior walls, doors and glazing, and a new black and white colour scheme.

As part of the transformation, the owners have signed a contract with Lion that will see the pub provide the different kegs for about 15 taps at the new craft beer emporium, which will be a huge win for beer lovers in the region.

The plans were submitted to the City of Greater Geelong back in July and this transformation follows The Lord Nelson’s last renovation in 2014 which saw the introduction of their loved beer garden.

The first Malt Shovel Taphouse opened in Adelaide in November 2018 and there are now venues in Bendigo, Randwick, Sunshine Coast and The Rocks. With the intention to create craft-beer led venues, they stock beers including Byron Bay Brewery, Eumundi Brewery, Brooklyn Brewery, Furphy, James Squire, Little Creatures, Panhead and White Rabbit, just to name a few.

The Lord Nelson social media accounts have officially taken on the new name and we’re expecting to see some exciting updates very soon. Keep your eyes out, and prepare for a killer booze-filled summer in the CBD.
