Step into this old converted bank in Geelong for a good old-fashioned yum cha session

It’s not your traditional weekend brunch, but it should be on top of your list for places to try out.

In a historic former bank in the heart of Geelong, sits one of the best destinations for the glorious feasting ritual of yum cha – Golden Dragon Yum Cha Restaurant.

Taking over the 1888 Boom Classicism style two-storey brick bank, the dining destination has earned itself a solid reputation among yum cha enthusiasts since opening back in 2015 for their take on the traditional Cantonese brunch, involving Chinese tea and dim sum (small plates of steam, pan-fried and deep-fried dishes to be shared). As well as being an eternal hangover cure and a prime spot to indulge in cruisy Sunday lunch, Golden Dragon’s yum cha is really just the best way to get together with friends with a tonne of food, a few teas and a bottle of soft drink or two.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news via our website.

Boasting a menu full of classics with a slight twist to them, this is unlike anywhere else we’ve been to in Geelong. You’ll find everything from beef dimsims, deep-fried prawn rolls, and a range of dumplings spanning Shang Hai pork, chicken, prawn and even veggie, to mango pudding, shark fin dumplings, deep-fried crab claw and their speciality, chicken feet in black bean sauce. Of course, you’ll also find the steamed BBQ pork buns providing a juicy, soft-textured feed.

Alongside dishing out insanely delicious yum cha, you’ll also find a selection of delicious eats for any time of the day, crafted to perfection from the in-house chef, using seasonal fresh ingredients.

For entrée, we recommend trying the vegetarian spring rolls, steamed Chinese style sausage or the prawn toast, or if soup is more your go-to, they’ve got everything from wonton and sweet corn to Westlake beef and shredded duck and veggie.

Set your tastebuds on fire with the sizzling hot plates and the Chinese BBQ plates, or indulge with the range of claypots on offer.

If sharing isn’t your style, there’s an endless list of mains to fill up on. From the BBQ pork and onion omelette, sweet and sour chicken, and stir-fried beef, to pork ribs, mixed vegetable fried noodles, and the classic combination fried rice, you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’re actually dining in East Asia. A highlight for the seafood lovers, is of course the Portarlington mussels cooked with garlic and wine, or the whole steamed fresh snapper with shallot and ginger sauce.

Don’t forget to leave room for dessert either! You’ll regret not trying their mouth-watering Egg Tarts (a Hong Kong favourite), or their Ma Lai Go, a traditional steamed Chinese cake with a fluffy, light and moist sponge made with brown sugar. Sounds heavenly and you can bet it tastes amazing too.

Whether you’re looking for an authentic Chinese experience in the heart of Geelong, or a well-cooked meal to enjoy at home, Golden Dragon Yum Cha is your one-stop.

Golden Dragon Yum Cha is located 154A Moorabool St, Geelong and is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Check them out on Facebook.
