Stamp Out And About #677

Stampsy is the Music Director and Drive Announcer at K Rock in Geelong

Bobby Brown sang about “every little step” he took. NKOTB took it “step by step”. And so did I. I faced 1000 steps… and I was terrified!

The last time I encountered a similar feat (pardon the pun), it resulted in surgery at St John of God and three months in a moon boot.

It’s day two of Mexico and I’ve already eaten my weight in tacos. My gender could be classified as “Enchilada”.

We strain our necks to look up to the Pyramid of the Sun. It’s a world heritage site located in Teotihuacan, and we’re in awe of its presence. The fog has lifted and the heat intensifies. My pasty Irish/Scottish skin is lathered in SPF 50 plus.

1000 steps.

How, as kids, are we so resilient? We’ll launch ourselves into the deep end of the pool, inhaling water, then get right back out and do it again. As adults, we weigh up the consequences. We lose ourselves in the memory of our previous pain.

Something inside me stirs. The fear. It’s flight or fight. I’ve been in this position before and I am hesitant. So here we are, face to stone face with the Pyramid of the Sun. The steps are narrow and uneven. The altitude hits me in the face as we begin to incline.

I have flashbacks to Spain. ‘Eyes down and go one at a time” I tell myself. The rest of the group is out in front but I’m not concerned. This pyramid wasn’t built in a day. It’s not going anywhere and neither am I.

We reach the first platform. Then the second. I take a moment to look down. We’ve covered so much ground but we are only half way. My knees begin to buckle. My ankles feel weak. But I begin to realise… it’s all in my head.

Yes, I have a severe case of FOMO (I want that picture at the top). But it’s more than that. I am the only one holding me back from achieving this climb. Fear is a result of the unknown. I do not know what the remaining steps look like. I don’t know how high it will feel once I am at the top. The only thing stopping me… is me.

So Geelong, I conquered the mind and conquered the Pyramid of the Sun… just don’t ask me how long it took me to get down.
