Souva Bar, Geelong’s first and only authentic Greek souvlaki bar, opens

1 / 7

The family that built Geelong’s only Greek restaurant has opened a tiny takeaway spot in Grovedale.

Four and a half years ago, the Mavromoustakos family opened MAVS. It has since become a Geelong institution, located in Geelong’s trendy West End precinct in Little Malop Street and offering fresh, homemade Greek cuisine with a combination of smaller dishes designed to share alongside a bigger, heartier fare while experiencing the atmosphere of a traditional Greek gathering.

Now firmly placed as Geelong’s only authentic Greek restaurant, owner Milton Mavromoustakos, who also runs iconic Ocean Grove fish and chip shop Mavros with his wife Julia, have captured the spirit of the restaurant on a small scale with Souva Bar, a tiny takeaway souvlaki store in Grovedale.

Sure to become a pillar of the Souvlaki community in Geelong, Souva Bar is nestled on a familiar strip along Torquay Road, surrounded by the likes of Subway, Routleys, Ricardi market Fresh and Popeyes fish and chips.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news via our website.

Opened in March, Souva Bar sticks to the MAVS tradition, with food coming from locally-sourced produce that is homemade, using the authentic family recipes to deliver top-notch Green street food. From marinating and preparing meats, to using only the finest ingredients, you can bet this Geelong institution knows exactly what it’s doing.

The menu is simple and succinct with Gyros, Souvlaki, Biftekia, Sheftalia, Mousaka, Falafel and Gemista, among others.

Embraced by a warm pita bread with tomato, onion and homemade tzatziki sauce, the Gyros Wrap selection is classically simple with Lamb, Chicken, Mix, Soutzoukaki and Falafel, while the Open Plate selection boasts these options, as well as Biftekia, Calamari, or a mix grill open plate, all served with chips, salad, pita and tzatziki sauce.

Alternative goodies include snack packs, cooked meals like Mousaka, Gemista, and Pastitsio, greek salad, dips and chips, all made fresh in-house.

Better still, at Souva Bar, you don’t have to compromise on flavour if you’re not into meat. Instead, you’ll find tasty gemista, haloumi wrap, Greek salad, juicy falafel, crunchy spanakopita and tiropita creamy bougatsa – meaning everyone can choose something to their taste. There’s also gluten-free options too.

As for the venue itself, it’s predominantly for takeaway but has a small number of dine-in seats and outdoor seating. Tipping its cap to the owner’s heritage and the beautiful Greek islands, a Santorini counter wrap packs a lot of punch in the petite space, rounded out by royal blue features and an intimate kitchen.

It’s simple, but it’s perfect.

To top it all off, the best part is the affordable pricing (the only items over $20 are the large snack packs and the huge mix grill open plate), the generous portion sizes and authentic Greek deliciousness to-go.

Fast, fresh and incredibly tasty – Souva Bar is soon to be famous for all the right reasons.
