Pivot Connect: Experience all things digital

Pivot Connect is the futuristic, fun and free community festival focusing on all things digital.

Created from a partnership between Pivot Summit (the one day conference held December 2), the City of Greater Geelong, and the Geelong Regional Library Corporation, the festival aims to fast track Geelong’s transformation into a vibrant twenty-first century city – embracing digital technology.

The one-day festival, as part of the National Year of Digital Inclusion and the International Day of People with a Disability, will bring together thought leaders, innovators, digital pioneers and businesses from around the globe to discuss topics around digital, technology, entrepreneurship and business.

This includes keynote speaker Darren Sharp, among others, who will discuss the new story for a new economy, The Sharing Economy. The presentation will showcase local and international case studies and demonstrate how the Sharing Economy is fostering digital and social inclusion to build stronger community connections.

The main focus of the event, the attractions and the range of guest speakers, is to engage and excite people about the realms of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

A key aspect of the day is getting people involved and allowing guests to interact with experiences like virtual and augmented reality technology, allowing them to make their own digital story, play Pokémon Go and Minecraft, and explore inventions for children with specific educational needs. There will also be the NAO Robot, music, raspberry pi, demonstrations on how to use an iPad, computer questions answered, how to Skype and heaps more.

Fostering a fun and interactive way of learning and experiencing technology, the festival also includes star attractions including DJ Fuzzy Logic, Tubby the Robot, The Transformers (Optimus Prime and Bumble Bee) and The Androids – Born in a Taxi. Professor Bunsen is set to be a highlight, engaging all with numerous fun demonstrations, including the explosive power packed in a teaspoon of sugar, gravity, a bottle bazooka, sound carrying light beam and much more.

Following the success of last year’s first festival, a festival based on this premise highlights the opportunity for Geelong to transition into a nationally-recognised digital economy, with the vast employment opportunities new technologies can create. An event not to be missed!
