Bumpy’s breathtaking debut EP Morning Sun celebrates community and examines the duality of human nature

Over the last few years neo-jazz, nu-soul has gradually been creeping into the Melbourne scene, establishing a rather rapid following as one of the most prominent up-and-coming genres around.

Merging elements of R’n’B, alternative electronica, jazz and hip-hop, the genre quickly earned its stripes, with trailblazers such as Hiatus Kaiyote and 30/70 migrating from tiny backyard shows and the Victorian ‘bush-doof’ scene to become revered on the stages all around the world.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

This means that Bumpy’s debut EP Morning Sun is being delivered to the masses at the perfect time. With her backing comprising electronically charged jazz elements and a vocal range resembling the raw huskiness of Macy Gray, Bumpy’s debut perfectly encapsulates the breathtaking vocal capabilities of the ludicrously gifted Naarm-based artist.

From the sweeping percussive breaks of ‘Leave It All Behind’ to the mesmerising shuffled percussion and funky Morcheeba-esque grooves of ‘Return Home’, Morning Sun will undoubtedly offer up enough to keep you grooving through the day.

The title track ‘Morning Sun’ highlights more of a folk sensibility to the artists, whilst ‘Hide & Seek’ maintains soulful grooves and powerful vocal harmonies alongside its slowed-down metronomic beats. But that’s possibly Morning Sun’s most impressive feature; that almost every song takes on a completely new style for the vocalist, but never in a gimmicky way.

Instead, Bumpy’s vocals are equally suited to any style she tackles.

Majak Door

Majak Door are a sly surf-rock, 60’s psychedelia, dreamy wave pop hailing from Melbourne, Australia. Named after their favorite AFL footballer Majak Daw, the six-piece band began touring relentlessly over 2018-19, releasing 2 EP’s ‘Weird Guy’ and ‘Samples Of The Solar System’ to critical acclaim from fans and peers alike. Although 2020 wasn’t what anyone had hoped for Majak Door pushed through releasing not only their very chilled take on Stardusts ‘The Music Sounds Better With You’ but two exciting new singles ‘Everybody Wants You’ and ‘Will She Leave You’ receiving strong Triple J airplay and honorable mentions in media outlets like Pilerats and features on Spotify editorial playlists like ‘Indie Arrivals.’

Once the brunt of 2020 had finished, the band were immediately back in action playing shows across Victoria while they waited for the other state borders to open up. In 2021 the band has already sold out multiple shows including The Workers Club and Wrangler Studios in Melbourne and supporting close friends Loose Bricks on their headline run of dates back in April with multiple dates all selling out before the band went into another lengthy lockdown.

After announcing and releasing their debut self titled album in September of 2021, Majak Door released quality single after another from ‘L’aqua Salata (Ain’t So Sweet) to ‘Smoke In The Air’ and the irresistible ‘My Nostalgia’ leaving fans of the band in awe of the musical depth and thoughtful storytelling in their lyrics.

These New South Whales

Australian punk royalty These New South Whales today release their eagerly anticipated new album, TNSW, via Damaged Records with the announcement of a national tour in 2023. LISTEN TO CHANGES HERE + THE FULL ALBUM HERE + SIGN UP FOR PRE-SALE TICKET ACCESS HERE.

A set of songs that finds the quartet leveling up immeasurably, it’s already received support across The FADERDIYNMEThe Line of Best Fit, and MOJO, the latter of whom wrote in their 4/5 review of the record that “it’s not even funny how comprehensively they kick the ass of most other contemporary punk-leaning ensembles.”

In honour of the album’s release, the band shares new single ‘Changes‘. Behind its towering walls of guitar that nod to everyone from Dinosaur Jr. to Placebo, ‘Changes‘ strikes a suitably celebratory note, coming as it does on the day that These New South Whales release their most definitive album to date. The band’s Jamie Timony explains that “‘Changes’ speaks to the idea of healing from the past and struggling towards new heights in order to be best version of yourself” – a lofty target that TNSW nails and then some.

TNSW marks a refined new era for the band, their most sophisticated body of work yet: a 14-track tome of barrelling punk rock that polishes its heavier moments – heavier than ever – with sing-along choruses, sharp arrangements, and plenty of trademark irony and self-awareness. For every ’90s alternative reference, there’s a blast beat; for every big radio moment, a cursed instrumental aside.

It’s an album that finds them honing in on These New South Whales – the serious punk band – more closely than ever before, a far cry from the more tongue-in-cheek approach of their acclaimed Comedy Central mockumentary series, their talk show-style comedy TNSW Tonight! and their exalted podcast, What a Great Punk, which has seen them chat to guests including Tame ImpalaAdrian GrenierShameAmyl and The Sniffers, and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard.

Over the years, the band’s music has developed rapidly, evolving out of the realm of distinctly Aussie basement punk into a more sprawling, international space. Following the trajectories of bands like Ceremony and Turnstile from nuts and bolts basement punk to a more genre-defying sound, TNSW encompasses a broader range of influences. Blending the dark energy of their debut album You Work For Us and the CBGB’s heyday of its follow-up I Just Do What God Tells Me To DoTNSW is both downtrodden and uptempo.

A post-punk record at heart, full of sonic depth and dejected storytelling but equally it embraces their ’90s alternative, hardcore and metal influences. Guitarist Todd Andrews found himself using references for certain guitar parts that he would never have touched on in the past (among them: Pixies, The Cure and Placebo), while Timony’s lyrics take a turn towards the poetic. “I feel like they’re honest songs,” says Timony. “I feel very connected to them, and that’s probably a result of not trying too hard to force the album’s hand.”

Before ‘Changes‘, three further singles were released from TNSW: the tumbling yet taut punk of ‘Under the Pressure‘ which beneath hints of Iceage or Fontaines D.C. finds Timony exploring ideas of performance and authenticity in his distinct Aussie drawl; existential anthem ‘Rotten Sun’, which was inspired by a poem of the same name written by Ceremony‘s Ross. J. Farrar; and ‘Bending at the Knee‘, an art-punk masterclass that found them pulling from the darker half of their palette.

Alongside word of ‘Changes‘ and the release of TNSW today, These New South Whales also announce a headline Australian tour of the record in March – April 2023. Sign up to the mailing list HERE for pre-sale acess from November 30, with general on-sale tickets available from December 1. Find all tour dates and ticketing info BELOW. With plans to tour widely in the new year and season three of their Comedy Central series in the works, These New South Whales look set to continue confirming themselves as a once-in-a-generation Australian punk proposition.

TNSW LP is out now via Damaged Records, buy/stream it here.

Tim Rogers and the Twin Set

Tim Rogers, one of Australia’s most respected and loved artists, brings his solo band Tim Rogers & The Twin Set out on tour nationally. With a career spanning 30 years and a catalogue of fan fav’s and critically acclaimed songs Tim’s long awaited solo return is here with support of his newly to be released solo record Tines of Stars Unfurled; released Feb 2023.

Tines of Stars Unfurled is a bookend to Tim Rogers’ classic solo debut of ‘99 What Rhymes With Cars and Girls, marking the welcome return of his fiddle-and-squeezebox country-blues compadres The Twin Set, and the (slightly more temperate) barstool yarn-spinner’s perspective that made the You Am I frontman ARIA’s Best Male Artist 23 years ago. That’s long enough to bring new poetry, wit and wisdom to the rock’n’roll philosopher’s kitbag as 11 new songs hold hands with their precursors across the chasm of innocence and experience. Kids grow up, adults split up, parents pass on, some nights look better in than out and somehow, the songs keep getting better. Like the first single says, Been So Good, Been So Far. “Guess I’m doing OK. How about you?”
