Nikki Wishart reflects on the pleasures and pains of the human form on Body Of Mine

On her latest single, the artist turns inward, musing on the body: all the ways it betrays us and why it deserves to be loved nonetheless.

Released today, Body Of Mine is a whirring indie-pop delight. Following the anti-love song Jealous released earlier this year, Nikki Wishart takes a more emotional turn on her latest track as she pays tribute to her past self and the way things change.

There’s something anthemic about the way Wishart constructs her songs. She builds and releases tension with ease. Catchy, familiar pop melodies fuse with raw and touching themes that are all too relatable: heartbreak, loneliness, a desired aching.

On Body Of Mine, she seems to sing from the perspective of her past self, in the midst of mental and physical health struggles, to who she is today. Time folds together on the second verse: “As you go play bigger stages I sit in doctor’s rooms and wait / to be told what’s wrong with me”.

The body holds the two versions of her together, at once frustrating and debilitating, and robust, resilient and beautiful.

The reverb-soaked vocals and sparse synth melodies add to the affect. In a step away from her previous work, the track fuses her typical singer-songwriter guitar strums with a skittering drum machine, washed-out risers and glimpses of muffled field audio. Her vocals, typically crystal clear, are given a softer texture, lending to the sense of intimacy.

Yet there’s a hopeful note that remains. Despite where she’s been, the future is bright: “I’m so happy that I see you glowing / Living life to the fullest every day”. It’s the kind of song makes you cry off your mascara and then wipes away your tears with silk tissues.

The latest track follows a string of singles released by the artist since 2019.
